Sony: PS4 Must Display A “Significant Leap” In Technology

Everyone is wondering when the PlayStation 4 will arrive, but Sony has – unsurprisingly – remained quiet on the subject.

The latest update leads us to believe the PS4 could still be a long ways off, depending on how you interpret the wording. During a recent MCV interview with SCE CEO boss Andrew House, we learn that Sony won't talk about anything until they've got a console that shows off a marked improvement in comparison to the current generation.

Said House:

"The right time to talk about new advances in hardware is when you can demonstrate a significant leap on the current experience, and something that is going to be attractive. That remains our philosophy. Beyond that we have nothing to say at this point."

Some have theorized that Sony might release a more casual machine the next time around, so as not to dig a deeper financial hole with costly, cutting-edge hardware. But it appears the company still wants to produce a powerful console, and they're not going to reveal anything until they've got one. Still, we hope they at least give us some pics of the new machine…this stupid fake PS4 mock-up is getting old.

I'm looking forward to seeing how they expand upon the way the PS3 reads media. I really enjoy using my PS3 to watch movies and TV shows.

It's so handy, I never have spend money on burning blank DVDs again.

PS3 Media Server FTW

Hopefully by making it able to read NTFS formatted hard drives. I hate not being able to put files larger than 4GB on my PS3. Also, .mkvsupport. Wifi connections usually aren't stable enough for constant high quality video stream.

I don't think the PS is the right machine to work as a *server*. You need some big MF discs in a real media server, plus preferably a torrent client to work for you etc.
The Playstation is the obvious media client in the livingroom though. Hopefully the ps4 will support a broader range of codecs.

I like the way Sony thinks. I wouldn't expect anything less than a significant improvement from them.

now what happened to it "being undesirable to launch after the next Xbox"

Anyway, there's a lot that can be extrapolated from the dude's comments from this article. One of which is definitely the cost/performance factor. The hardware is most definitely there to blow the crap out of the current gen. How marketable it is at this point is a different matter.

Did you see that Microsoft announced their new tablet? Seems a bit late, made me laugh. It has a little keyboard.

I've seen little. And what I have seen left me underwhelmed. Some day I'll get a fancy tablet but until then my $280 netbook I've had for over year does everything I need a mobile computer for outside of games. I've written a number of reviews on that little Toshiba 😉 To do that on a tablet I'd have to pay extra just for a physical keyboard.

I have a nice little Acer netbook and a Kindle Fire. I'm slowly moving into reading books on it. I still prefer the physical book but I ran out of shelf space a long time ago.

It just seems a little bit early for next gen consoles. Either that or time is going way too fast now. I don't know.

Take your time Sony, only Quantic Dream and Naughty Dog have grasped the PS3's power so far.

After this long I'd say that's an argument in itself for a replacement of the hardware. 😉

Beamboom, I'd say some people need to get their act together or change careers. They don't replace equipment you can't figure out, they fire your *ss, at least in America.

Beamboom

Hehe… "Some people"…. Let's see: QD and ND makes… 1% of all developers? If we add a couple more 1st party houses we are probably there. Ergo, 99% of all developers should be fired cause after all there's nothing wrong with the product. No way. Can't be.

That's rational only in America.

Call it what you like, but tell me this: What's easiest? Replace the hardware, or the people?

I was kind of saying if most devs can't keep up with current gen hardware they won't do any better with something even more powerful.

"Keep up with"?
Man, seven years plus before developers are able to write efficient code for it is *ridiculous*, no matter what kind of hardware we talk about. It's pure insanity. It would have been a complete catastrophy had this been any other kind of computer. It really is madness. I lack words to describe it!

You can't release hardware on the market that takes almost a DECADE of trouble before you start getting software that can use the hardware properly. It's completely bonkers! lol, I struggle with coming up with any kind of analogy that is not too utterly stupid. There really is nothing to compare it with.

Just imagine if you bought a fancy new lap-top tomorrow, and it took seven YEARS – year 2019 – before your different software were running properly on it. It really does not matter what the *potential* of the laptop were: The reality is that you for almost a decade had a laptop that in effect didn't perform any better than other, simpler lap-tops. A good deal? Hardly!

If you think that Naughty Dog and Quantic Dream are the only ones making great games for the PS3, you aren't looking hard enough.

There are 120+ games in my PS3 library that function just fine. If you're trying to make a point about graphics, then at least 110 of the ones I have look better than what I've seen on the xbox360 and some pc games.

Beamboom

Oh there's plenty of great games indeed! But you and I gotta have entirely different collections if you seriously mean that most all multiplats are either as good or better on the PS3 than the other platforms.

Either that, or we just see what we want to see. Cause what I've seen is that we've for the most part been happy and relieved if a game run *as* fluid and well on the ps3 as on the x360. We've even been fine with having to wait for a patch or two to make that happen.

I mean, I'm a PS3 fan too, believe it or not. But it *is* allowed to be a tad sober and realistic sometimes, and just see things as they actually are. And I love my PS3, I have never regretted getting it, not one single day, but that's *despite* the problems. Cause the problems have been there, and they have been persistent. There is nothing wrong in saying that.

Didn't you say in the past, that you wanted the PS4 to be an xbox-pc clone, not those exact words, but if I remember correctly, you don't want Sony to continue with the cell architecture and you say your a PS3 fan.

I won't say you're not, but you don't sound like a playstation fan. 🙁

Beamboom

Ah, allow me to explain.

For me, being a PS3 fan is not a question about being a fan of the architecture inside the box.
It's much more a question about being a fan of the design, the "brand feeling", the interface, the controllers, the "look'n'feel". And all that remains no matter what chips, circuit boards, wires and CPUs that hides behind the plastic wrapping.

Whenever there is a story in the news about the poor Playstation owners who struggle with workarounds for this and that savegame problem, or drop in framerates, or screen tearing, or crashes, it saddens me. Whenever developers are saying that "making our game for the PS3 basically meant we had to write the entire game all over again from scratch" I *understand* why we experience all those problems. And I don't like that.

Basically, as a fan I believe it is a wise move by Sony to remove some of the hurdles that is causing all those problems. It simply makes for a better console experience. And THAT is what I want.

So yes, I am a fan! I am a fan of the Playstation, and the Playstation is much more than just the internal architecture.

Remember, the Apple and PC/Windows machines are both based on the exact same architecture too! Still, they are entirely different user experiences, running different software, two different products.
I see the same difference between PS4 and X720, regardless if they are based on the same architecture. They will NOT be clones.

I certainly hope so. I don't want the tech demos(especially the Agni one) to remain mere concepts, I want these to represent the level of graphics we will get from PS4 games.

Probably best to build your own PC gaming rig with all the bells and whistles…

No doubts Sony will come out with a stonker, but the question is when. Like most Extremers here, I am more than happy with my PS3. So many good games to play through…

Q!

They just don't want cannibalize sales of the PS3 for people who might then think, I'll just wait a year for the PS4.

I'm in agreement with Highlander and Beam on this, I am fairly certain that the PS4 will launch holiday 2013/early 2014. Sony keeps making these vague comments because they still have Holiday 2012 to sell some PS3s.

It sure looks like they'll be supporting the PS3 next year, and probably for a couple years after that with the list of exclusives coming out.

I really hope so.

Now that the Xbox brand is losing gaming steam and focusing more on tv streaming services, Sony better makes the PS4 a powerhouse or I will finally jump in the PC/Steam bandwagon.

I for one am MORE than happy waiting. I really don't have the cash for a new system. I NEVER touch my 360. The last update I did for it added avatars. Seriously. I play my PS3 all the time. I would play games like Zelda on my Wii, but I have lent it to my mother to use for Netflix and Hulu. I am HOPING to be JUST able to afford a Wii U when they come out, so long as it stays under $350. I ONLY plan to do that because I'd like to see Nintendo reach todays current level of gaming, graphics wise. I'm not desperate for it. If it's too expensive, I'll get a pre-owned Wii from GameStop instead so i can finally play the pile of Wii titles I've put off, without leaving my mother without her streaming box.

As for the PS4… I will not be buying it at launch, even if it waits to come out. I still don't trust Sony after the Other OS removal, and would like to both wait to see what they do to the PS4, and wait for it's first price drop or two. I am MORE than happy waiting for the PS4.

My biggest factor is economy. I'm trying to pick up a 3rd job. How does spending $600 on a brand new system, in a crap economy, when I'm trying to work even MORE… how does that even make ANY sense!

I do not plan to buy a PS4 until at least 2015 or 16. Not a day sooner.
