We were hardly the only ones to give Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain a stellar review score .
The magnificent game still holds an average 93 Metascore and obviously, our readers find nothing wrong with that.
According to the results of our latest poll, the majority of participants believe MGSV deserved the scores it got, plain and simple. A surprising number did say they thought the game was good but not that good, though, so perhaps there's a pervading belief that franchises like Metal Gear Solid often get the benefit of the doubt due to their legendary name. Well, either way, the game is pretty amazing and if you lack a PS4, you should consider snagging this bundle while you've got the chance.
This week, we want to know what you think about a possible PlayStation 4 price drop in the U.S. Microsoft boss Phil Spencer believes it'll happen soon ; do you agree? And do you think Sony should cut the price? Let us know.

Awesome game but the story really was not that great compared to any of the past metal gears
I'm finding MGSV to be pretty boring, game play has improved but I've never been a fan of the MGS game play. The story is where it's at for me and right now it isn't grabbing me, I have no desire to play again. I have no interest in building mother base and my army. I'm just forcing myself to play just because it's Metal Gear.
That's exactly how I feel Cloud. I love the Metal Gear games too in the past.
This time I'm like forcing myself to play.
Yeah it's excellent looking. Fluid and smooth I think maybe it's not having as many cut scenes.
Maybe I need to do more main missions and see if it changes my mind further in.
For the record, 'The Phantom Pain' actually has more cutscenes than any other 'Metal Gear' except 'Guns of the Patriots.' The major difference is that most of them are comparatively short and they are spread out over much more gameplay.
Jalex is correct. If you want the story to move along, don't play any side ops unless you need the cash.
Certainly is the best game I've played in a very long time. Just finished mission 31. Done building mother base. Now I'm working on the FOB.
Mgs5 start really strong, but after that it becomes really repetitive and the boss fight and story is kinda lame.
Good game this year yes, but it definitely not the greatest MGS game…
I loved the opeing in the hospital, now that felt more like mgs.
I miss the long cutscenes and codec conversations. Still tons of story are on the tapes. Games like this seriously need an option for players with OCD though. So glad all 50 missions and 157 fun at first Side Ops are done. The 10 or more Story missions you have to redo were annoying too. 46 was brilliant story wise but utter crap because it was replaying Mission 1 but with scenes added that basically answered a lot of questions about the whole series. Awesome game but it over relied on the compulsion loop that everybody has in some form. Thank Bungie for games that pull this crap since they were the first to hire psychiatrist to advise on games. Still a great game but the repetition got old even with infinite ammo and the other stuff like wormhole extraction being used just to get through it faster. I hate OCD.
No. It was the reason I bought a PS4 but I as deceived. The release we got was not co plate this is evident in chapter 2 when you repeat missions which are deemed as new missions. It broke the whole pace of the game and ruined every moment that wasn't a repeat from Chapter 1. The bonus disc with the C.E. Shows the, concept of a mission which was cut from the game, a mission which follows up a huge story point which is just left out in the game. It just feels incomplete and if I never receive a Subsistence release of the game I want to know exactly what went down with the conflict between Kojima & Konami. Simply put as a consumer they have delivered me a faulty product. This is what happens when reviewers don't at least complete the whole 'Campaign', it's pretty evident that many reviewers completed chapter 1 and left it at that.
"Simply put as a consumer they have delivered me a faulty product. "
No they did not. This game is packed with content and nuanced details that no other game is. Everything from the complexity of the weapon and item crafting/customization, to your buddy's, mother base and invading others FOB's all the way down to little things like if you tranq a guy who then falls face first into a puddle, he'll drown if you leave him there too long.
There's so much going and a ton of different ways to tackle these missions even if and when you play the same ones over. If you played Ground Zeroes then you shouldn't be surprised at the kind of game The Phantom Pain turned out to be. Not to mention the gameplay mechanics are top notch. Sneaking is as much fun as blowing sh*t up.
Also nothing was cut. The material you're referring to was a concept that simply didn't make it into a game that is already gigantic. 170 hours and only 50% complete gigantic.

I am not debating that the games mechanics are nothing short of amazing. But for a series like Metal Gear the story is what is core. the Phantom Pains structure from Chapter 2 is abysmal and it is very evident that the game was incomplete. Not to go into spoilers but there is a core story arc which happens in the game and it is left unsaid – that extra mission I mentioned on the bonus disc shows this part. It was clearly meant to be in the package and to be honest I think there was a lot more intended for the game as a whole. I'd trade all them side ops and bland mother are features for a coherent Chapter 2. Sadly all. Ruins the gameplay for me, I'm not even bothered about Paltinuming the game and completing all the side ops – this is coming from someone who adores the series it's up there with Final Fantasy for me, so I take this very seriously. This game is incomplete and we need a Subsitence version to remedy it.
exactly how i feel vivi
As high as my expectations were for being a devoted fan of the series since the first 'Solid', I am genuinely surprised at how impressed I am with 'The Phantom Pain.' 'Guns of the Patriots' is the one to beat, in my opinion, and while I do wish we could have had some more of that Kojima indulgence like in that title, overall I find it hard not to be impressed with the way he so vastly expanded the 'Metal Gear' formula while still retaining the core experience.
Legitimately one of my all-time greatest games.
Indeed. They nailed the gameplay. It's freakin intense trying to go for S ranks being as far as I am in the game. The enemies are more skilled and better equipped than the first time I play those missions. And I still have 19 main missions to go.
For me the gameplay is great but the game is really lacking in lenghthy detailed cutscenes, the story just felt all over the place. Chapter 2 is the reason the game doesnt deserve the high scores its been getting, with the player just completely the same missions over and over in order to advance story progression.
Even in chapter one it was very similar missions which boiled down to extract, kill or get information. To me even though it was really cool going into a mission all stealth like and infilitrating a base feels great, the game just doesnt feel like you're really progressing through a story but rather just completeling random missions.
Not that the game itself isnt good ofc. Just that it does have a fair amount of flaws especially for fans.

Agree…
Funny how the sony failboys are thumbing everything down that Isn't positive about Metal Gear Solid 5. Good luck supporting konmai im refusing to buy this new. F konmai. And F konmai brought high review scores.
Genome Soldier will defend this game no matter what…
Im a huge mgs fan but I can still admit when a game has flaws.

I have only played about 4 hours of the game, but I am disappointed how fast the story takes a back seat.
I would have rather them cut the content down a bit and focused on the story more. I will miss that.
I do think the gameplay is a huge step forward it plays very very well.
Last complaint, screw whoever got rid of David Hayter. The reasons they claimed leading up to the release were they needed a good actor who could portray emotion…..yeah right, Snake barely talks in this game, and when he does it is pretty basic and mono tone.
After watching the intro there is no reason for them to have not called Hayter back, and that does cheapen the experience for me. I wonder if it was Konamis choice, like they wanted it as a selling point? Or if David was busy or him and Kojima had a falling out.
Lol, oh the irony.
Konami gave gamers what they wanted. More content, open world and less convoluted story telling through 20 minute cutscenes. And gamers still complain.
Smh…

SOME gamers. Konami needed to produce a game that appealed to the masses because all AAA productions must these days, given the immense cost. And as the masses will always favor constant movement and action over story, MGSV made perfect sense for the market.
And it's one of the rare games that makes this kind of them that actually worked. The story is still there. It's just told through more audio than cutscenes. It's a valid criticism but it hardly justifies the complaints about the high review scores. The game still does what it set out to do very very well.
Besides, I think these changes have far less to do with industry pressure than people think. Kojima made it clear, even right after the release of MGS4 that The Phantom Pain was always the kind of Metal Gear he wanted to make and had in mind since the very first game.

I think Kojima is full of crap when he says this is what he wanted to create. Granted I havnt played it but everyone agrees the story took a back seat.
When a guy like Kojima develops many games which the story telling and pacing is the catalyst that holds all the pieces together, you can be pretty sure he's talking with his PR people next to him when he says this is what he envisioned for the series.
So he was full of crap when he expressed his desire to make an open world Metal Gear game back in late 2008? Years before TPP was announced?
@bigrailer19: Even if everybody does agree that the story took a backseat (which I don't concede they do), they would be wrong. There is more story here than in almost every other 'Metal Gear' game. The only difference is that 'The Phantom Pain' finally brought what (supposed) fans have been clamoring for practically since 'Sons of Liberty': More content.
There is a bunch of story in 'The Phantom Pain', there's just a bunch more content, as opposed to previous entries where cutscenes were about a quarter of the experience.
Maybe he wanted to make an open world MGS game, but all of his games he is big on story telling and detail.
The story telling here takes a back seat.
I love that there is variety in the gameplay here, but doing the same three types of missions over and over and over again does NOT equal more content.
It is like the people claiming Destiny has unlimited amounts of content, when in reality when the game launched it was all recycled content.
People spend hundreds of hours on mobile games that have one gameplay gimmick and that does not mean that game has a lot of content.
I don't mean to compare MGS5 to mobile games I am mostly trying to draw a comparisson to time invested in a game == content.
The weapon upgrades are very basic, it looks fancy but when you actually start playing with it you realize that the whole weapon upgrade system could have been made an balanced in a very short amount of time.
Mother base stuff is cool but I would have rather had all of that stuff have been automatic and linked with story progression and had more story to dig into that wasn't on audio tapes.
TLDR?
I love the game it plays great but aspects of the game feel incomplete and rushed. Most likely because of Konami and Kojimas falling out.
How many hours have you spent exploring the game xenris? Playing with all of its machanics and activities?
Honestly, it doesn't sound like a whole lot given your claim that there isn't more content than past games in the series.
I'm sitting at about 10 hours right now. I enjoy playing the game, I think you are taking my criticisms of the game the wrong way.
It looks great, plays great. I have upgraded my base a couple of times, I have seen the unlock trees, and I understand how you split your recruits into different departments based on their stat/rank.
I'm sure there is more to the game as I play on, in fact if nothing expands on what is there right now I will be extremely disappointed.
But I have listened to the audio logs, and played all missions and a couple of side ops, and the story is just not there yet. If it gets better great don't spoil it, but it feels off to me.
After playing The Witcher 3, that is all I can compare this too, and The Witcher just hooked me and pulled me along much better than MGS5 has so far.
First I would just say don't compare it to The Witcher. Different games different genres. Second, 10 hours is not a whole lot for this game. I'm sitting at roughly 180 hours with a 55% completion rate. Now I have spent a fair amount of time grinding for GMP but I have also been trying to find every collectable and good recruits for mother base.
The story is there. And if you want just the full story, blast through the main missions and save the side ops for when you need cash. I would suggest though trying to find the Legendary Gunsmith in the side ops as you will need him to really open up the weapons customization section. It's wise to hunt down other Specialists too and Fulton them back to mother base.
I kinda thought from what you said about the customize system you haven't yet fully unlocked it. Once you do you can really see then how deep it can be.
I will grant you and others that the story is not as up front as in past metal gear games. But it is there and it will fill in the gap missing between Peace Walker and the original Metal Gear. You have to keep in mind that this title is a lead up to the very first Metal Gear. So a great but if focus is going to center around building Outerheaven.
I think people are worrying too much that this isn't your typical linear, narrative driven Metal Gear and letting that distract from the excellent gameplay and astonishing amount of things to do in this game. I personally always loved Metal Gear for the espionage and stealth gameplay. The story was always just second to me. Which in my mind is what games are really about. Great gameplay.
Did you play Peace Walker?

I think I should first say I wasn't attacking the game. This really is about Kojimas comment more so. The game is just the bystander.
And quite frankly it doesn't bother me one bit what he said. I just don't think there is a lot of truth to it. Based on previous comments and more importantly previous games and his development style.
Yeah I am aware I only just scratched the surface, and I will chime in once I get further in the game. I only compare it with the Witcher because that is what my brain is doing lol, it isn't intentional!
See my main thing with all the unlocks and weapon upgrades is I do not kill anyone, ever and I rarely use my tranq gun. So I find a lot of the upgrade stuff useless for me right now.
I have had no problem getting A and S ranks without killing a single person and using pretty much no gear other than the carboard box and the tranq gun when I feel lazy.
I did play peacewalker, but I never beat it. I lost my PSP when I was moving and was going to buy the HD collection but was playing other games.
