Nier 2 Announced, PlatinumGames Is Working On It

Oh man, I loved Nier !

We're getting a sequel to the cult classic action/RPG and everyone's hoping for another unique, addictive game.

The lone caveat is that because the original developer, Cavia, is gone, PlatinumGames is now leading the charge. They're saying the new title will offer a "fresh blend of action and RPG gameplay styles" and yes, it will be exclusive to PlayStation 4. That's great news right there.

Plus, the all-star design team features producer Yosuke Saito ( Dragon Quest X , Nier ), director Yoko Taro ( Drakengard , Nier ), character designer Akihiko Yoshida Final Fantasy XIV , Bravely Default , game designer Takahisa Taura Metal Gear Solid Rising: Revengeance , and composer Keiichi Okabe ( Tekken , Drakengard , Nier ). Nice to see so many people who worked on the original game!

I just hope it doesn't get all…um…Platinum-y. In other words, the focus should remain on the RPG part, and not require us to master combos or anything like that. Here's hoping.

This is great news!! Nier was a personal favourite of mine. One of my top ten PS3 games (for entirely subjective reasons). Still, with so many people clamouring for more RPGs all the time, I wonder why so many people didn't play it. I guess it probably needed guns and/or a FP view or something. Who really knows what gamers want in the end?

I was squealing with joy when this was announced. The whole time the trailer was playing I'm like Nier…no it can't be..but is it…can it, then it flashed the name and I lost my mind.

That being said, the first game was still more an action game than RPG. I just replayed it with my friend about a month ago. The combat particularly boss fights is about having quick reflexes on the dodge button. When 100 orbs come flying out at you it becomes like a bullet hell shooter.

That being said I am more than stoked to have platinum doing the gameplay. They are known for deep combat systems, and good framerates. The director is the same, the soundtrack is the same person, man this game is going to be great.

Drakenguard 3 suffered from abysmal frame rate issues, while Nier didn't…don't know what happened there.

I feel the same way. I'm overjoyed that this is being made. I never would have expected a sequel after how poorly the first game sold and was reviewed. I love it though. The soundtrack, storyline, characters, and gameplay were unique and fantastic.

I dare say even more excited than the FF7 remake since we all know that's going to be screwed up.

I sadly never got far in Nier. I got to some part where I had to grow a watermelon and couldn't figure it out and as other games came out it just fell by the wayside.

It's not really more action than RPG. If you're not well prepared for those boss fights, your dexterity probably won't save you. The game still puts a premium on planning and preparation, like all good RPGs.

I'm worried that, this being Platinum, the cerebral part won't matter as much and you can still beat just about anything if you're good with a controller. There's a very big difference between the two gameplay structures.

Yeah, I understand your concern Ben. Platinum's signature gameplay style seems not to be a good fit here. I can only hope that they do their research and cater to enhancing what made the game great for the fans instead of just putting their spin or interpretation of it out there.

I don't 100% disagree with you Ben, I just found that I wasn't really paying attention to leveling up when I played through it the second time.

I think what I loved about the first game was the variety of gameplay, sometimes the camera shifted to isometric, sometimes the game felt like a point and click adventure game etc.

I also loved the little touches, when you talk to devola in the first village the singing in the background stops, and starts again when you are done talking to her. Which indicates that she is singing and playing the music.

There are more examples but man I'm kind of with LV on this one, I might be more excited for this than the FF7 remake.

Advent Child, use a guide and keep going if you can. The story is well worth it. It has such a weird dark story and the characters are just really weird and interesting.

Oh wow, incredible and unlikely news! This game was crazy cool and if anything deserved a second chance its this.

Greatest video game soundtrack in HISTORY.

I hope that main character is a full female too.

Second that on the soundtrack. Best I have ever heard. Hopefully Emi Evans gets to sing again. Her voice is haunting.

Hope we get the swearing hermaphrodite back. She was my favourite.

I agree this is the best game soundtrack ever. It was Kingdom Hearts for a long time, but when this released it surpassed it.
