No doubt about it; it was the biggest damn announcement at E3.
Square Enix is really preparing a Final Fantasy VII Remake for next-gen consoles (it will debut on PlayStation 4).
However, the question remains: Will they completely overhaul the gameplay and story, in addition to the obviously upgraded graphics? Yeah, well, that seems inevitable. When GameSpot asked director Tetsuya Nomura if the remake would be different from the original, the answer was:
"We’ve announced an HD port version on the PlayStation 4, and then we have the remake coming to PS4. You’ll have this extremely, very, very pretty FFVII existing on the same plane. We feel that if that happens, it’s like, why have the same exact game?
We think that if a game is on a certain platform and that platform becomes obsolete, then we’d recommend playing the new port version."
Guess that means the remake won't be anything at all like the original classic. Wow, I'm already losing interest. That was fast.
Related Game(s): Final Fantasy VII Remake
So as long as the game itself is still good I'll be okay with it. It'll still have tons of heartfelt nostalgia tied up in it. Those who just have to have it the same game can play the previously announced HD port.
The up side is for those who want something rooted with the same soul but freshened up in ways more than just graphics. They'll now have two ways to experience this story and these characters.
Edit: I see the whole thing as fan service so I don't want to punch a gift horse in the mouth

btw, Sony totally beat MS at E3 this year.
Sony's press conference yesterday will be remembered for years.
It's the conference that made 3 seemingly impossible hopes and dreams a reality. Among other stellar showings like Horizon and a killer Uncharted 4 demo, and Sony taking the CoD mantle away from MS. Sony also didn't gobble up tons of time on VR, as some feared. They pretty much nailed it…. other than No Man's Sky. Sorry I'm already bored of that game.
PS.. Halo is getting old and tired and doesn't seem to carry the same weight it did like 15 years ago.

Unless the PS4 port of FFVII is vastly improved over the HD PC port we got on Steam in 2013, it's going to look hoooooooorrible. They basically just fixed the original PC version and included support for higher resolutions without actually updating the visuals in any way, so trying to play the game in 16:9 is just… ugh.
Hopefully they put a little more effort into the PS4 version.
poopy. oh well. these days I prefer that game on my PS Vita anyhow. The low-res backgrounds still look quite nice on a small screen.

Yeah my son and I just got done playing through FFIX on PSP, gonna start on FFVIII later this week. Games hold up pretty well on the small screen.
"I'm already losing interest. That was fast."
Oh c'mon. When has Nomura ever made a bad game?
Hasn't he mostly been lead character designer on games, with the exception of the Kingdom Hearts series? Or am I out of the loop? I haven't really paid much attention to Square as a developer since FFXIII.
He's a director too.
FFXV looks like a potential flop for Nomura
Every game Nomura directed has been great, even though it is mostly Kingdom Hearts. If you Wikipedia him you can see more he worked on but they are all excellent.
I don't know why Ben lost interest so fast either, it could have combat that has tactical depth like the Witcher 3 or Bloodborne, only with Japanese flair.
@World
Given recent interviews Nomura laid out a framework for FFvs13 and once it changed to FF15 it was Tabata doing everything. Tabata said he wants to keep the spirit the same but, same characters etc, but the story is going to be a bit different and as we can see he took full reigns with the combat.
Nomura does excellent action RPG combat, Tabatas Action RPGs are good but nothing compared to Nomuras?
So I don't think we can say that Nomura really is making FF15, and even if we were saying that it is a flop based off of a Demo is ridiculous.
This ff7 is for new younger generation of gamer like me…
Well that statement doesn't mean it won't be anything like the original, as you stated. While I don't trust the bastards either, you'd be crazy not to change the game to fit up to date standards such as conversations, tone, side quests that fit into the original story, more cut scenes or dramatized interactions.
You wanna use the medium to remake it, not to reproduce it.
Think of it this way: everything in Corneo's mansion would have to be more creatively nuanced. Kooky nutball humor needs different treatment using full character models versus super deformed dolls.
I'm going to latch on to this and keep hoping. World, I'm holding you personally accountable for any shattered hopes moving forward.
Ruh roh.
I'm 50/50 on this. I had really hoped for a graphics-only, semi-gameplay overhaul, not a completely different game.
But, I'm also open to innovative changes that might make the game much more fun (but at the very least have that class FF7 attitude intact).
So.. I'm happysadbutmuchhappier. Sorta.
One thing I'd do is give it an even darker tone. It was dark for its time but I'd make it even darker, like having the early team troubled by the innocent people they kill as terrorists.
My version would be even more a psychological f*ckfest than Cloud's head was in the original. Of course you'd have to make the great moments twice as stunning to offset that.
So it could be something like FF13 with a FF7 skin on it? 🙁
I don't expect it to be the exact same game but if it lacks materia, similar gameplay, a world map, and the original soundtrack I will be pissed.
Yeah, me too.
On the soundtrack side, I expect it'll still be present. I can't possibly see them scrapping that.
It would be nice to see a few additions, though. A couple of the songs from Crisis Core were excellent.

20 years has passed. Go with the flow…
THis is awesome news imo. Hope they add to the story Genesis.
So does this mean we will see Cloud in a dress in HD?
I'm sold

also he could just be talking about the gameplay.
Stop messing with my nostalgia!
It's definitely gonna be a open world action rpg just like FF 15…
I said this a before but it bares repeating now. As a REMAKE this project is not just an overhaul of graphics, audio and breaching technical limitations from the past. They will have to change things and features which may be considered dated by todays standards. We won't see turn based combat, I can almost guarantee that, the series is really stepping away from that these days (For better or worse) and I just cannot see them returning it. They want Final Fantasy VII to appeal to a modern audience so the game will have modern features. I do believe it will have the Materia system, Crisis Core did and we see many games that arent even RPG's with customising features, it's a core of VII which I am certain will remain.
I don't believe we will see world map in the style of Ni No Kuni either. I think it will be something similar to Dragon Quest VIII where you'll still get a sense of a world map – Landscapes between the cities, towns and other environments.
Events will also change, when a film is remade they never do a shot for shot remake… they did once with Psycho and it was bombarded with abuse for it. So expect sequences we know and love to feel differently. What I advise is not to expect Final Fantasy VII but expect to see it in a new perspective and direction.
"The reunion at hand may bring joy, it may bring fear, but let us embrace whatever it brings. For they are coming back."
On a side note, NieR 2! Gosh that had me jumping for joy! I never expected a continuation of the series after the lukewarm reception the amazing first game got. I also think it is a brilliant project for Platinum Games to work on. I just hope to god that the director of NieR is in charge of the writing – I don't want a train wreck a story like Metal Gear Rising again. Best news of E3 for me.
I was on skype with my friend and when I saw the trailer I was like the only surprise I could get here is Nier or Brave Fencer mushashi reveal.
As the credits kept coming in, I was like giddy, and I'm like nier… nier??? omg is this nier…then I saw it flash and I cheered.
Nier is an amazing game. I just wonder which ending they are going to use as canon. It looks like they will be using the true ending to me but who knows.
… So they are slapping an old story that all FF fans know too well already onto a new game that non of the fans want? Yeah well that sounds like a receipt for success…

We never really expected it to be the same, did we?
At least they have some of the original guys working on this. We're not getting a stranger's interpretation of what an updated version should be like.
I don't see what the big deal is about. If this game is being directed by Nomura….I imagine it being kingdom hearts mixed with crisis core combat. Whether you like arpgs or turn based KH1 and 2 had really awesome combat systems, KH1 feeling slightly more like an RPG than the second.
If this game comes out, keeps all the key moments in tact, the music a large world to explore, but shaves off some of the monotony then I don't see how it isn't going to be fantastic.
If FF7 was your favourite game that is fine but it wasn't perfect, there were fetch quest moments, there were terrible pacing issues once you left Midgar, and I can't stress enough the materia system was quite easy to exploit as well as the combat system.
I loved FF7 and I know its imperfections are not a reason to dump the turn based combat when they could tweak it instead. However in this market that might not work well for them, and this game no doubt is going to be expensive to make.
I think whatever we get is going to be at the very least a good game. Whether its the remake some people want is another thing.
For the record I'm fine with it being turn based, I love turn based games, but I'm also okay with it going the action RPG route.
I expect an action/turn-based hybrid, personally. Hopefully, that's the case. I love all the characters so much, the only thing I don't want is to not have control over all of them.
I'd be interested in Kitase's take on this.
Something like Ni No Kuni would be cool. I hope it still has the ATB bar which limits the action based combat. They could really take a page from NNK because I think that combat design would work really well in this game.
I too love the characters, although 9 is my favourite this is a close second.
That's not a bad idea, actually. Combine that with a sort of gambit system that lets you pre-control and plan the second and third character's behavior… might have a winner!
Not to be a smart-aleck or anything, but shouldn't everyone hold judgment at first?
Let's wait for more information before we pronounce from the rooftops that the sky is falling!
We still don't have that much info yet. The interview felt vague enough to garner hope that it isn't over. We'll know a lot more when we have actual game play trailers. It's all in a frame of opinion. Maybe Nomura's idea of a remake involves less change to us than it does to him.
SE if you even dear scrap the original sound track I don't know what I'm going to do to you. Simply just update the compositions.
Why even speculate? It wont be out for probably 5 to 10 more years.
that is a really good question aye
happy gaming
