Ready At Dawn Would “Love” To Build The Order As A Franchise

Yes, it deserves a sequel. But whether or not it will happen remains in question.

At the very least, developer Ready At Dawn wants to produce a follow-up effort to the controversial PlayStation 4 exclusive, The Order: 1886 .

Newly appointed studio boss Paul Sams and founder Ru Weerasuriya tell GamesIndustry.biz that the game "was never written as a one-off story" and "there is a lot more to tell." They have high hopes for the future, as Sams said:

"We would love to be part of building The Order as a franchise. It is an IP that we created, that we deeply love and that we believe in. We cannot say more than that regarding The Order at this time."

Remember that Sony owns the IP and while Sams says Ready At Dawn would've liked to have retained ownership, they needed Sony's help to bring the game to market. Therefore, Sony has to make the decisions going forward.

We say critics dropped the ball with the game, as explained in our review ; the reflections of an industry that would just love to see the death of linearity in big-budget productions. Interestingly, Ready At Dawn claims the game is "well on its way to meeting sales expectations."

Will it be enough to warrant a sequel…?

Coulda been a great franchise but after that debacle I think it's done.

It's a 'debacle' when people don't like a game very much?

Of course. It's an absolute debacle that millions bought 50 Shades of Grey.

Interesting way of defining 'debacle', I suppose.

Either way I wouldn't count out The Order getting a sequel, despite the lukewarm reception. Plenty of franchises had fairly mediocre initial games but sold well enough to warrant sequels that turned out awesome. Best example I can think of would be Zone of the Enders, which suffered from many of the issues people seemed to have about The Order (repetitive, too short, etc.), but Second Runner is one of the best PS2 games ever, IMO.

ZOE2 is the best High-Speed-Robot-Action game ever.

I've always loved that Kojima just makes up his own subgenres and gives them ridiculous and awesome names. Tactical Espionage Action, because there's tactics behind running around eating food while shooting bazookas at shamans in tanks! High Speed Robot Action, because my game is so off the wall crazy different your silly standard adjectives fail to describe it!

Man I can't wait to see what he does next.

i was happy with the game, sure it fell a little short but i think the story alone warrants another game where they can build on the first and improve on it

Hell yea it deserves a sequel. The game wasn't even half bad. Very well written. At least give it a sequel so we can see improvement. Uncharted 1 was on the so-so list with its popcorn movie style. And then after a sequel…..BOOM. Give the game a chance.

Yeah right, Uncharted 1 is arguably the best game in the series if you disregard graphics technology improvements.
