FFXV’s Luminous Studio 1.5 Engine Is Pretty Impresssive

A game is only as good as the engine behind it. Technically speaking, of course.

Square Enix has released a new tech demo for Luminous Studio 1.5, the engine that powers the upcoming Final Fantasy XV .

If you saw the full live stream this past week – during which time the publisher announced the release date for Episode Duscae 2.0 , the FFXV demo – you watched this already. If you missed it, you should really check it out.

They show off some pretty impressive tech, such as physically-based lighting systems, global illumination, skin-penetrating light and realistic car paint. They're definitely going all out to make FFXV look as incredible as possible. But most fans put a premium on gameplay, so let's hope the updated demo delivers in that respect as well.

I feel like this game is just going to get slapped down critically. With something 'next-gen' out by way of Witcher 3 I feel like comparisons are inevitable. Especially considering this will have that goofy japanese brand of characters and acting that won't rub well with everyone.

Honestly I hope it does get slapped down. Every effort to make Final Fantasy an action game deserves giant monetary losses until they return to the classic formulas that made it great.

Yes, World – exactly. Except the stuffed-shirts over at Square HQ will just think people aren't interested in Final Fantasy anymore instead of linking it to people not liking the mockery that it has become.

Maybe positive sales of Persona 5 will knock some sense into them.

I don't know if anything can knock sense into them but it's shocking that nobody has considered that perhaps the series' greatest strengths might help its sales if they were returned to the games.

Woulda been more impressive 6 years ago. It looks like western folks are helping Japanese programmers understand things like light and particle effects finally.

I'll give it a fair shake. My biggest worry after the demo is (besides that wonky battle system) that most of the game will be padding due to all that slow running around the wasteland between quests.

As good as it looks, I'm not a fan of the Monster Hunter style combat. In a first for a numbered Final Fantasy release (outside the MMORPGs), I'm going to skip this one. Congratulations SquareEnix.

I hope this game makes a comeback.

They really screwed up Final Fantasy 14 online, and they got a new director, and revamped it hardcore, had tons of beta tests, and surveys and that game has turned into one of the best MMOs on the market right now.

If they can pull it off for this game it will be great, I just hope that the game isn't filled with fetch quests.

I know a lot of Final Fantasy have had fetch quests, but I hope this game is paced more like Kingdom hearts than say Dragon Age:Inquisition.

I'm still interested in seeing what changes they've made and giving it another go.

Based on the first demo, though, I can't see me being very interested.

Looks fantastic. I wonder if gameplay is cool and not boring like FFX-2…thats the last one I played form the series (I played the first one on NES).

Yikes man… FFX-2 had a story and presentation a lot of people didn't like, but it's generally respected as one of the best battle systems in the franchise… some would defend it as the number one best system.

Nearly a decade since I was given a FF title I wanted to invest 100+ hrs in. Sad.

If it's fun and immersive, then I'm fine with it
