Ben-DutkaSo, Fallout 4 is now official and the gaming world is abuzz.
I'm always intrigued by ambitious video games, regardless of style or genre. But of course, I have my personal preferences, as does everyone else.
For instance, I've always been more of a fantasy guy as opposed to a sci-fi guy. It's why I will always gravitate towards games like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and why it's always difficult for me to get involved in titles like Mass Effect . To narrow things down a bit further, I really can't stand the post-apocalyptic setting, which is just way overdone these days in all forms of entertainment. I find such a setting depressing and utterly boring. Everyone's gone and the landscape is dead and everything kinda sucks. Yeah, got it.
There are exceptions, of course. The Last Of Us utilized a post-apocalyptic theme, for instance, and it's one of my favorite games ever. Similarly, I really liked Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" (it certainly wasn't worth a Pulitzer but I still liked it). I also love the Bioshock series, which is about alternate fantastical realities. But there's still a post-apocalyptic vibe 'cuz you're always running around in an area that used to be thriving and now, something is seriously wrong.
I kinda got a Bioshock feel with that debut Fallout 4 trailer. I know it won't be anything like Irrational's award-winning franchise in terms of style or tone, though. As for Fallout 3 , I couldn't have been more bored. I'll play The Witcher 3 incessantly but Fallout 4 's oppressive setting might be just as bland as its predecessor. In my opinion, of course.
I dunno. Guess I'll have to see more media, which I'm sure is right around the corner. E3 is close!

This series was much better when it was a turn based strategy. Now the game feels extremely slow with encounters few and far between. I'll most likely play it, but definitely not a D1P for myself.

Sure he is. I don't know if it was better when it was turn based, but encounters were often very few and far between with lots of running through fields of nothingness.
What? You must have walked out of the vault and gave up. Plenty of encounters. I cant even keep count of everything I exploded with VATS.
CEO, the number of hours I wasted running across a wasteland…
I gave the game about 10-12 hours of a chance. Just didn't hold me. I honestly can't do anything about that.
I'm sure it'll be more of the same in terms of appeal.
Fallout 3 was the only open world RPG that held me all the way through to the end though. I look forward to the sequel.
EDIT: to me the big draw is the feel of a struggling people, where order was shattered and you get to observe how humanity carries itself after the disaster. It's great.

I watch the disaster that is humanity every day. Not sure I need to see more of it.
Absolutely! Thats the whole point.You hit the nail on the head with that Temjin! There couldn't possibly be a better setting and done so damn well as Fallout did!
Ha Ben just use it as a means of coping with today's reality then. Where you can unleash in the virtual world.
I liked Fallout 3 but I absolutely share Ben's feelings about how sad it is to experience post-apocalyptic settings. It can get downright depressing at times. Maybe it's because I know it's all too possible to happen some day…
I have to disagree about the environment. Fallout started the postop setting way back and they've always done it the best because there are many extremely different places and factions and stories that are a fanciful outcome of what a dead future would look like based on humanity's old fear: The Nuke. Right down to the Lost in Space robots you get an interesting world to discover.
Everything and everyone isn't gone, the places are true to life ruins of an actual historical city, they have become everything from cannibal towns to factions to a lord of the flies cave run by kids. It's all out there in the waste, and you gotta love the experience of traveling and digging through famous and interesting places in the wastelands or you'll never feel it.
For me, I'm happy but I can't rest because we don't know when it's coming. There's no way they kept it a secret until it was ready to launch in the same year. It could be 2 more years.
yea, you really have no idea what kind of pocket of life you're about to encounter. the weird craziness people and mutants can become. the robots add a twist too. to me it feels a lot like the twilight zone or something. Like that story dream sequence half way through the game, where you explore the civilized neighborhood you grew up in before the fallout. it was cool and it helped draw me into the story.

Like I said, entertainment is very subjective.
I just don't find any of that even remotely interesting.
Temmy & World: Yeah me too, those "pockets of life" all had the potential of being fantastic discoveries where I had no idea what to expect.
That dream sequence were of course also very special, but one of those "pockets" I remember most profound was the small village that were trying to win (or had won?) a beauty contest for the beautiful neighbourhood, but had that one secret they were hiding, literally in the back yard… Just a tiny little thing thrown in, but man that was fun/creepy/perfect. 🙂
Man I think the virtual world of the child murderer was so brilliant. I could explore a bigger version of that world all day.
I actually liked Fallout 3, especially the combat but I didn't finish because I got bored. I'm actually looking forward to Fallout 4 tbh.
I loved Fallout 3. I felt it was just the right size too. It was a big world but I did all the quests and beat the game in under 100 hours.
I loved exploring the world, but I am a junky for post apocalyptic worlds.
ey y'kno i'm with you on this i thought FO3 was snooze worthy, but i could reinstall FO2 like everytime someone mentions it, so FO4 kinda got me holding my breath
way to the ride the mad max hype tho, it's a good time with E3 coming up too
I definitely gonna try Fallout 3 after this. Fallout 3 sounds like the best open world rpg game ever made based on the review and comments that I've read so far.

Bethesda managed to fix Fallout: New Vegas and Skyrim after several dozen patches each but Fallout 3 is more buggy than Oblivion and good luck attempting to complete Broken Steel, I swear that broken mess of a DLC must have like a 15% completion rate.

Whoa…such a shame you didn't embrace the greatness we know as Fallout 3.
Yaknow, it's funny, I started playing Fallout 3 and immidiately judged it based on the first few moments. It was my first experience WITH a Fallout title. I had seen the game in action before, my friend showed me Fallout 2 and 1 yonks ago, but back in those days nothing beat Diablo and Diablo 2, so I didn't care much for Fallout's top down system.
Anyway, I was borrowing a friends PS3 at the time (didn't have one of my own yet, I was considering buying, just needed a coax) and tried Fallout, very quickly brushing it aside to play the other PS3 games available. Then I tried it again one morning, doing things a little differently just for the giggles and discovered how much fun being a twat could be 😀
I became addicted to it, it literally sapped my life away, it was so much fun and I had one good character and one bastard, which made both playthroughs awesome. I remember at the time the AI being more advanced than I had ever experienced, remembering your evil ways and chasing you in and out of sections where I thought they'd give up on you like all or at least most games do.
I played everything Fallout after that, but was a little let down by New Vegas, it felt a little too filled with people, almost more GTA than post apocalyptic. Don't get me wrong, I like the clusters of people, but I wanted more of the deep, dark long since abandoned tunnels filled with scary and powerful glowing ghouls, among other creatures. It was action packed, creepy, fun, everything packed into one and the PC version with all the mods only added to the fun.
Fallout 3 set the bar so high that Skyrim, Rage and other similar first person adventure type games next to it felt lacking. Better graphics, but missing something, something that Fallout 3 had and still has.
It's amazing to see the impact this news have: It's making headlines even on tech-sites not usually reporting on gaming at all. Heck, it's even on BBC News!

I'm sure then both Sony and MS are laying out money offers at Bethesda's feet for exclusive advertising rights and DLC.
The announcement will probably happen at e3.

World, yeah it just exploded. This is what you achieve only when you let it pass a handful of years between each release.
Temmy, if that happens it will utterly annoy me regardless of platform. Masterpieces on this level should be accessible to all gamers.
Oh I know. I don't like that Tomb Raider was locked down to XO and SFV locked down to PS. It seems to me this crap started when MS played it like this with 360. Claiming Mass Effect, CoD DLC and stuff like Netflix all to themselves.
I hate it actually because the marketing face of this new gen is buying up multiplatform games for yourself or exclusive advertising deals, effectively screwing over the existing fan base.
They even go so far to proudly announce it too. Theyre shameless.
I'd love to see Sony or MS get boo'd off stage at e3 for any announcement like that

For me Fallout 3 is THE number 1 game[and it has some bugs ahem],but to each their own.
E3 is around the corner,hope we'll get an release date:
Skyrim was released within 1 year after announcement[11 month's] and later on Todd howard[or was it Pete Hines..][from Bethesda] did say they wanted a shorter time between announcement and release .
Furthermore several industry insiders like shinobi602 and Tidux did say some time ago! that it would be announced AND released THIS year,that's why i believe in a release this year,so E3 will be quite interesting.
If i'm wrong,well too bad

I too think it'll be this year.
They're pushing pre-orders hard on their own web site. I suspect they are doing so because this game has a firm release date in the next four or five months. Exciting!
I actually love the series, I can appreciate spending 65.00 dollars on a game and getting more than 8 hours of game play.
I loved Fallout 3, but hated the level cap. I hope they remove this cap from Fallout 4.
I liked the trailer. Showed a lot of different visual presentations and variety.
I got really bored in FO3's world. I loved the game otherwise, but I can't handle a lack of colour. My brain needs more stimulus than that!
Fsllout 3 and Fallout Vegas were a guilty pleasure to play. My first Platinum on PS3 was Fallout 3. And the reveal trailer that I watched yesterday made my day. Im looking forward to play this game on day one that its released on PS4 (which I will get bundled with Batman late this month).

i think we'll definately see more at E3 which on in the next couple weeks which should be good. as for how everyone is going to react to playing or seeing more and whether they will enjoy it as much as the previous fallout games remains to be seen(i assumer they will).
