VR Expected To Take Up “A Lot Of Time And Space” At E3

With Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus in the works for 2016, this isn't overly surprising.

We're only a few weeks away from E3 2015 and everyone is wondering what we might see. GameStop COO Tony Bartel says he expects "a lot of gameplay" and some "fantastic innovation."

But he also added that, based on what he has heard from "key players" in the industry, virtual reality will take center-stage at E3:

"I think the other thing that's going to take a lot of space and time at E3 is virtual reality. I think that's going to be something that a lot of people spend a lot of time on."

Perhaps Sony will show off the first games that will support Project Morpheus. It's bound to be a major release for 2016, even if I have little to no interest. Do you think the future of gaming is VR? Or is this just another gimmick like 3D or motion-sensing?

Well, in point of fact, it's an enhancement of both 3D and motion-sensing, right?

it seems like it might be a gimmick. how will movement work? do we "walk" in place without crashing into anything or will we need to buy one of those "safe cages" to where we can just stand in it and do our movements?

i know its 2015 and we were supposed to have flying cars by now, but i dont think this technology is ready for mainstream yet as it seems like a market ploy to milk the last bit of 3d.

augmented reality. lets make that happen already

It'll be a fun addition with certain key games but there's no reason for big pub/dev teams to use it so it won't take off at least not yet. Notice how there was like 6 games for the PSEye and then never any more again.

ALSO we should be afraid of this dominating Sony coverage at E3. If it's a stand in for exclusive software showings then we are in trouble for another year. Watching VR experiences is not impressive, you have to be in them.

I just want support for this confirmed for Gran Turismo 7. If so, I'll be getting the Morpheus asap.

In 20 years when they manage to bring something like .Hack// or Sword Art Online to life and make that a reality, sure VR could be great for gaming.
