Don't worry, it's coming back.
2014 was the first year in over a decade that the gaming community didn't see a new Need for Speed title. But a "full reboot" is being planned for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC and it should be ready to race later this year.
Developer Ghost Games confirmed as much and while they remain somewhat tight-lipped about the project, they did hand out a brief teaser trailer. We also know the project was inspired by the Underground series and it'll be an open-world game with day-night cycles. We'll also have the benefit of "deep customization" and an "immersive narrative." I reserve the right to doubt the latter but you never know.
And publisher Electronic Arts really hopes this NFS reboot hits big. Ghost Games general manager Marcus Nilsson told GameSpot that the series has flagged in recent years:
"Need for Speed, ten years ago, sold a lot more copies than it sells now. Which means we have a lot of room to move up. We have a global, known brand; it's strong. But I think we have a lot of upside for this franchise based upon getting our details and information and features in order."
Well, here's hoping! And to learn a bit more, head over to the PlayStation Blog .

Aannd i l just lost all interest in this if its going underground again. Thats the one direction i didnt want them to take it…
Damn shame too, hot pursuit left me hopeful for the future of the series. I realize im probably in the minority here but give me exotic cars and exotic locations. Thats what made nfs unique. Take that away and theres nothing special here, just another racer.

Umm just another racing game? SO tell me where the high speed chases/cops are in Forza, Gran Turismo, Project Cars and Drveclub because I musta missed that…. while teh original Underground did not feature police and thus was indeed "just another racing game" the NEW NFS undergroud WILL have cops (as shown in that trailer) and thats why I WILL be getting it…. if they didnt have the cops then yes it would be just another racing game and I wouldnt be buying it.
How I hope the graphics and the feel would be just like what the trailer depicts…
Please don't suck.
Omg yes this was exactly what i wanted! 🙂 Open world underground style. Hopefully they add steering wheel support
what does "open world mean" in a racing game anyway? doesn't a confined track in racing mean its not open world?
godsman, open world means that you're not confined to selecting tracks with defined pathways from a menu screen, like the original Gran Turismo and Forza games.
Think Burnout Paradise, where you have access to an entire city, can drive around it at will, select events from within the city itself instead of a menu, and take any path from Point A to Point B during races.
What Bio said..NFS Underground 2 had an open map where you could free run and then enter races. So if you wanted to just test out your cars on the streets with racing you could.
Open world racing game is fun, that's why forza horizon 2 is my favorite racing game this gen…
Underground 2 and the first Most Wanted were definitely the best in the series in my opinion, i'd gladly purchase this if it went that route again
Cant wait!!
Can't wait to hear more.. I've been holding off the NFS games for years now, did not like direction they were headed, don't want a freakin' need for speed cross burnout style game.
Cant wait to hear more
I dont understand, the story are slim to none. what is there to reboot? isn't every year's iteration a reboot already?
It's like saying, we are going to reboot Assassin's Creed but with a new character!
Eh… What made NFS shine at first was its realism. 2nd took the arcade approach to the extreme. 3rd was good. It wasn't bumper car racing. 4th set the tone for the next in the series (excluding the Porsche game). It went downhill pretty fast for me. Never played it much on console; preferred making and racing cars on PC.
I doubt they'll capture the feel of the original games. Need for Speed is strictly just a name that reminds me how fun it used to be.
I just wish EA would let Criterion make another Burnout Paradise game. Still, and by far, the best racing game ever made.
I would love to see Burnout Paradise 2. Sadly the team has been split up. Alex Ward and
Fiona Sperry, the co-founders of Criterion Games, left the studio last year and took a handful of long-time Criterion people with them and formed a new studio. They are not working on a driving/racing game. Before they left, Criterion was already down to about 20 people after much of the staff got transferred over to Ghost Games. But then Ghost Games were hit by layoffs at the beginning of 2014. So who knows how many of the Criterion people that worked on Burnout Paradise in 2006-2008 are still at Criterion/Ghost Games/EA, working on Need for Speed. Hey, maybe EA will surprise us for the 10th anniversary in 2018.
well lets just hope that its actually good and that its a good need for speed game cos all the other ones recently were all just the same thing with different names if we're being honest here. so something acutally different would be nice i'm still waiting on NFS shift 3(thats more like shift 1) EA where is it.
and lets just hope it feels realy great it as a good NFS game should feel to play
happy gaming

i seriously cant believe it took 10 years, a year of two nfs major releases and 1 year of nothing, to get a proper nfs release. WOW!!!
at any rate they could have achieved huge media attention and praise if they did the previous game releases well. Namely need for speed hot pursuit and especially most wanted. Instead they opted for some sort of hyprid open world arcade racer or who the fuck knows what.. pretty sad as i had HIGH HIGH hopes for most wanted 2012.
