Despite all the success the vaunted Mortal Kombat franchise has had over the years, it has never enjoyed a month like April 2015.
According to the latest NPD Group results , Mortal Kombat X was the #1 title for April and furthermore, NPD analyst Liam Callahan says it's the "biggest month ever for the franchise in terms of sales."
In fact, it's the second-largest debut month in the history of fighting games ( Super Smash Bros. Brawl still has the crown). It's also interesting to note that the PlayStation 4 version of MKX did better at retail. As for the overall software chart, it's below; Grand Theft Auto V came in at #2.
Overall software sales rose 13 percent to $256.7 million (up from $227.6 million in April 2014), and Callahan says this is mostly due to sales on current-gen consoles:
"For new physical console software, eighth-generation consoles sales grew by 200 percent in revenue, which offset declines from seventh-generation consoles of 62 percent, and portable declines of 32 percent. Overall, console software increased by 20 percent, leading to overall video game software growth of 13 percent."
While PS4 held software sway in April, it lost the top hardware sales spot to Xbox One. However, Sony was quick to point out that PS4 remains the overall leader.
This is a clear sign Sony needs to drop the price of the PS4. I expect a price cut by e3 or as an announcement at e3.
edit: One also has to wonder by how much these wins are. Say, Sony may have been tops for most of the year but by how much? It would seem that during a slower release time there wouldn't have been any major shifts in console sales pacing. Could this just be a month where MS came up with it's head just above Sony's? Where next month the story could be just the reverse? Meaning they've been neck to neck the whole year.

Most of the little kids I talk to have Xbox, once in awhile I run into a smart Playstation kid. You can tell the difference.
Once in awhile I hang out with cool master race kid, you can tell the difference…
Glad to see GTA V is still on the top 10 list…
End of the line boys. End of the Sony.
Goddamnit now I gotta' sell the PS4 I just bought last night :'(
PSN: BankeA
Since friendships became faster, efficient, unlimited and streamlined – add me!
Any guesses on why the X1 sold better last month? While not a big seller I figured Bloodborne would have gotten some more interest in the PS4 especially seeing as it has been one of the few exclusive games I have seen TV commercials for.
Besides Bloodborne everything else was multi-plat, maybe the Uncharted delay and such has had an impact on the Sony hype train?
There aren't any strong reasons from what I can tell. Hence the reason I suspect this year has been a closer race than what may have been originally assumed.
Is DELL or HP or some company dishing XO's out with computer purchases?
I remember getting a free Xbox 360 about 3 or 4 years ago with my laptop. (Which I turned around and sold)
Edit: basically when there's nothing to show for a sudden spike in sales I would think that would suggest there wasn't one. Where instead it was a gradual climb. Which means a trend shift. This really is something Sony needs to respond to right away.

Yeah that's kind of odd that Xbox1 came out on top in a month when the PS4's best exclusive yet just released…
