GotY Battle Thus Far: Bloodborne Versus The Witcher 3?

Have we already seen this year's Game of the Year? Or are we just getting started?

So far, we've seen two games that would probably factor into end-of-year voting for 2015 GotY: Bloodborne and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt . Do you think either will win the illustrious award and if you had to guess, which one has the advantage right now?

Wild Hunt is bringing down very big scores; it currently holds a Metascore of 92. From Software's challenging but wonderfully received PlayStation 4 exclusive also has an average Metascore of 92. It's a dead heat for the time being but of course, we don't have the majority of reviews for The Witcher 3 just yet. When all is said and done, which one will have the critical edge? And outside of scores, which one do you think you'll prefer?

Obviously, as you haven't played one of the games yet, it's hard to say. But it's always fun to guess. And don't forget that Batman: Arkham Knight releases in June, so we might have three legit GotY contenders in the first six months alone. And I doubt anyone will be complaining.

Related Game(s): Bloodborne , The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Although Bloodborne has been my favorite game this gen by a country mile, out of the two of them I'd put my money on The Witcher 3 nabbing GOTY due to the sheer size of it's map and the ridiculous amount of content within it's world.

I haven't played The Witcher 3 yet so this is just purely speculation on my part but so far imo everything i have seen from the trailers points to a Witcher 3 victory.

At the end of the day though I don't think too many people will care who wins it or not as both are grand games in their own right.

Anyway we all know the true GOTY doesn't arrive until September 😉

At least 2015 looks like the start of real next gen gaming. Witcher 3, Bloodborne, MGS5….sprinkle in a little Halo 5, Tomb Raider, and No Mans Sky and you have games that appear to be light years better than the past two fall line ups

It's gonna be a showdown between MGS5 (MGS4 is one of the highest rated games of all time), Bloodborne and witcher. I won't discount the batman either.

My money is on Omega Quintet for its turn based battles.

Back in the real world I think we've probably seen it, Witcher will have wider appeal than Bloody Underpants.

Not much else coming this year. Maybe 2016 will be our year! And then the 3D headset in 2017 right?

Oh yeah, I need help from a Bloodborne fan!

What, specifically, happens when you die?
-What do you lose?
-Where do you start over?
-Is there a game over?
-etc

A little research, thanks guys.

What, specifically, happens when you die? – All the enemies return and at times the enemy that killed you has glowing eyes

-What do you lose? I forgot what it's called but you lose experience points hwich can be used to level up, upgrade weapons and purchase items

-Where do you start over?
It depends if you were able to light the lamp (check point) in that particular dungeon (for lack of word). In many of the dungeons there are shortcuts so you don't have to fight all the enemies all over again.

-Is there a game over? The game is over when you get too frustrated and turn off the game lol.

THe beginning of the game is the most challenging part of the game. After that the game is a bit easier especially if you're able to get some help from other online players.

When you die you lose all of your blood echoes, essentially the souls of this game, they will either be left on a Bloodstain for you to retrieve them or an enemy in the area that was alive when you died may absorb them and you will have to kill it to get them back.

Blood echoes are used for leveling, buying items, and upgrading.

When you die you begin at the last Lamp Post you rested at.

There is no game over and unlike Dark Souls there are far less crucial NPC's to accidentally kill and screw up your game.

Bloodborne is quite simply a faster paced more approachable Dark Souls.

Only game over will be if you quit or have a mental break down and chuck your controller, system, or game out of the Window.

What! World trying this?, I bet the first boss Cleric Beast would make him quit the game.

the enemy hunters stay dead. So "all of the enemies returning after you die" isn't technically true.

believe me, later on you'll be glad some of those enemy hunters stay dead. you're tasked to take on 3 at a time at a later point in the game (who aren't optional as far I can tell)…. before a boss. You're dang glad those suckers stay dead.

oh, and it's good the average enemies respawn because it's built into the game's economy and system of progession. As you get more powerful, the average enemy encounter looks more like "experience" to you so it's really one of those things you don't want to avoid, because like any RPG more experience means more powerful.

and yea, like I think shaune said, the blood echoes either drop on the ground or are taken by an enemy who is alive in the vicinity (and not necessarily by the one who killed you). You have to hunt them down -their eyes glow when they're a carrier- and kill them to get your echoes back. If you die trying to get them back you lose those echoes, and subsequently drop whatever one's you were carrying when you were killed (again).

Uh no, not trying it, at least until it's like super cheap. I'm just needed the research info for an article. I've been away too long as a writer.

Thanks for the replies guys I'll save em!

Faster paced, check. Simplified and stream-lined, sure. More approachable? Not quite, imo. There's a scrapiness to the combat, particularly with the Bosses. In Demon's Souls, you could slowly circle about the bosses and carefully observe the combat patterns, and openings. In Bloodborne, you really have to engage the boss in combat, to do so, or they will engage you. Sure you can runaway (quickly) all you like, but you won't get a good look at the boss. There were only two bosses that I did not need to use blood vials (potions) in, and that happened out of luckily exploiting a hack to beating them.

Bloodborne was a hell of an experience both literally and figuratively, but when it comes down to it I think Witcher 3 will win out for being more accessible and gamer friendly.

I enjoyed my time with Bloodborne but I don't see myself going back through it, I started new game plus and got as far as the Cleric, but the magic was gone. What makes Bloodborne such an amazing experience is not only the challenge and reward but also the mystery and discovery. By the end of the game I had run through the environments so many times that I had every map memorized, every enemy location down. Replaying it felt more like grinding than actually playing.

For me personally I like games I can replay, and have the same sense of wonder even though I know what coming. Bloodborne just doesn't have that for me, to be honest I don't know if the Witcher 3 will be repayable, especially after 200 hours.

My game of the year, which I know the majority will disagree with is the Order 1886, do I see it winning game of the year by any publication? No, absolutely not. But for me I really loved the world of the Order as well as the gameplay and story. It's extremely easy to pick up and replay because I know the experience I'm gonna have. That said I am well aware that I'm in the minority here, and I'm not knocking Witcher 3 or Bloodborne, I just personally liked the Order 1886 a lot more than Bloodborne, and will probably come back to it after I finish Witcher 3.(note this was written while extremely hung over, so take what ya will from it)

Drinking on a Wednesday night? Hope you had a great time.

While I have not finished Bloodborne, I'll say it's an excellent game but I enjoyed Dark Souls 2 much more. Perhaps it's because of Demon Souls and Dark Souls but it's good having something different from the same developer.

Yeah Wednesday's are my Fridays, plus I bartend at a brewery so its hard to pass up quality beer.
I'm trying out Dark Souls 2 Scholar of the first sin, I will admit it's a bit rough on the eyes after playing the likes of Bloodborne and The Order 1886.

I actually hope GotY isn't so much determined on aspects of how popular something is or how much content is crammed into it.

In Bloodborne's case it's greatest strength is the emotions it can envoke on a person. It's unlike you're typical action-RPG. It deserves major props for being something that feels so richly absorbing, both in design and in unique visual richness.

I think Witcher 3 will be great and it stands a great chance. I just wonder if it's going to be known more for the open world RPG that does open world RPG'ness most massively and crammed with tons of stuff or will it actually feel like an experience that isn't just another game of it's type (a twist on a very familiar theme), but instead something truly remarkable. Known for something more than "well it's the best of it's kind"
