It sure started off with a bang, didn't it?
In 2013, the entire industry was gearing up for the event of the millennium: Not one, but two brand new consoles launching within a few weeks of one another. Who had ever heard of such a thing?
The stage was set for an epic confrontation and the hype was through the roof. And I suppose one could argue that given the relative closeness of this race thus far (Xbox One is hardly out of it), there's plenty of intrigue. But I don't really see that. With a distinct lack of exclusives on both sides, there's really not much controversy or discussion among the PlayStation and Xbox faithful. The problem is that neither system has really stood out for any particular reason thus far, and that makes things boring .
These two systems are just too much alike. Remember the astronomical differences between Dreamcast and PS2, for instance? Or the original PlayStation vs. N64? Even PS3 and 360 had more differences, especially out of the gate. PS4 and Xbox One have a bunch of multiplats, similar price, similar reliability (or so it seems), similar apps and services, and a few solid exclusives here and there. That's about it; not much else to talk about. What's the biggest news so far? That the new Tomb Raider is a timed Xbox One exclusive? Big deal.
Oh, and the less said about the freakin' Wii U the better. Maybe Nintendo can spice things up if they produce a new Nintendo that can actually compete with PS4 and Xbox One, but I doubt it. 'yawn'
Things are more homogeneous now. Concerns over media format wars have vanished. Japanese support that were both AAA and favoring of PS are less a focus as they've largely gone mobile. There's only a handful of publishers who publish AAA content as it is. With both Sony and MS buying out exclusivity. Online connectivity has become equal, something Sony lagged on early last gen. Graphics look rich and life like with processing hardly a limiting factor anymore to game design.
We're at a zenith of everything video gaming has been racing towards for the last couple decades.

Honestly, it's about time! Console choice should always be centered around personal preference. Which controller fits your hand better, what platform do your friends play on, etc…
No more rage filled debates about superiority and other non-game related factors. Now it's up to the game developers to wow us!
I'm glad it's less of a war. The whole console war thing last gen was dreadful. Moving on…
Don't worry…
Console war will be fun again when Halo 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider come out this year…
wow. retard or troll?
What troll? U know halo 5 and new Tomb raider come out this year right?
"Not one, but two brand new consoles launching within a few weeks of one another. Who had ever heard of such a thing?"
The GameCube and Xbox launched within 3 days of each other. GameCube on November 18th, Xbox on November 15th. Of course, both those consoles launched with killer exclusives (Rogue Leader and Halo), and killer exclusives seem to be much fewer and further between these days, and neither PS4 or XB1 had one at launch.
And the PS3 and Wii launched within TWO days of each other. Guess it sounded better on paper than taking actual history of the two previous gens into account. Oh wait, we listed Nintendo systems. They don't count. lol.
Console wars in general are boring. Only the fanboys or the childish actually care or post it in a blog.
Console war article is good for click bait…
Yeah makes me cry. What else can I follow to enrich my gaming life? :'(
It's true, but I don't mind it.
The PS3 years were tiresome with all the magic mumbo jumbo claims about the "hidden powers" of the PS3 we never really saw "fully tapped".
Now we got two platforms built on the same technical foundation, with similar programming challenges and opportunities, it's now all about the games. Like it should be.
I would consider a game like TLOU to be proof of what the PS3 was fully capable of.
Or Uncharted 2.. or Uncharted 3.. all spectacular looking games considering the gpu that was in the PS3…
If anyone tapped all the potential of the PS3, it was definitely Naughty God.
You may add a PC Master Race vs consoles to that:)
An ant has no quarrel with a boot.
Though consoles may eventually work their way up to roach status 😛

"please bring Bloodborne to pc"
PC master race is so pathetic…
Ummm PS4 has something Xbosx doesnt….. share play
There's only a console war when Microsoft is on top. Their supporters are usually immature little kids that spew any propaganda they read over at Edge, Polygon or Kotaku.
Now that Microsoft isn't top dog, the kiddies have nothing to say, but try and downplay obvious shortcomings such as lower resolution and lower framerates.
I knew it. I knew it would go down like this. Just like the whole direction of DX12. I knew it would strengthen the PC market (which will unfold as the software matures).
It's much like the Genesis and SNES days where the subtle differences only embolden the fanboy arguments. While there's outcry for less exclusives to boot. I wouldn't waste another dime on a console if we lose exclusive games. It's the only means of truly squeezing out all that's possible from a platform.
