Silent Hills is dead. Survival/horror purists are heartbroken. They can hope for a sequel to The Evil Within or perhaps another Outlast but that's about it.
And why? Because these purists haven't been happy with the direction their beloved Resident Evil series has taken. Well, many are torn: They say the the smaller off-shoot productions like Resident Evil: Revelations are actually very good, but the main series installments – like 2012's hugely controversial Resident Evil 6 – have gone astray.
It's quite the sensitive topic for the fans in question. Trust me on that. However, perhaps the demise of Konami's anticipated project opens the door for Capcom: Maybe now is the time to redefine the nature of horror with Resident Evil 7 . I had extreme difficulty reviewing RE6 primarily because it lacked any sense of identity. I really don't think it had any idea what it wanted to be. If Capcom can hone in on what made the iconic franchise great in the first place, this is a golden opportunity to bring Resident Evil back to the forefront of interactive horror.
It should be clear to them that, given the positive response to survival/horror titles over the past few years, that style of gaming isn't dead. In other words, Capcom should realize that Resident Evil doesn't have to go the "twitch" action route to survive. People still want the slow-paced, tension-building experiences, and we could – theoretically – get that with RE7.
I wonder what the fear lovers have to say about all this.

As a fan of Resident Evil since I was a wee lad, no I do not think Revelations is very good. Its…uh, decent? Buts its not scary, its atmosphere is poor and its…everything else is even worse. Is it bad? No, but far from anything worth noting.
When it comes to Resident Evil 7… I'm highly torn. I noticed that, though I defended the hell out of 6, it was extremely boring after a second playthrough. 5 was not scary, nor was the story good, but it had almost infinite replayability. Almost every survival horror game has infinite replayability.
If Resident Evil 7 wants to succeed, it can't be Resident Evil anymore. Silent Hills was being taken in a completely different direction, and because the SH games aren't connected aside from 1 and 3. RE is a series of events that have led to where it is, and that means it has no chance of returning to horror because what scares people nowadays is not undead human life, but ghosts and things that you can't really defend against.
Resident Evil would have to have a spin-off to appeal to the horror base while 7 appeals to the action fans. When it comes down to it, it would take someone with a mind built on ideas within ideas to bring Resident Evil 7 from where it is, and where it came from, into the terror that people fear nowadays. Kojima and Del Toro were those people for Silent Hill, and unless Capcom brings out a magic saviourman, don't expect too much from RE7. It'll be a fun shooter with coop and hopefully tons of replayability.
I don't doubt Capcom wanting to resurrect the fear people used to have, myself included, from the older RE games and thats includes 4. But like I said. People are afraid of different things nowadays. Zombies and over the top looking mutants won't give much of anyone the chills and goosebumps.
RIP Silent Kojitoro Reedus Hills.
I agree with you entirely, I enjoy a good horror game myself but even though resident evil 4 was great, that's about where you saw them moving away from the original horror feel, resident evil 5 was good but had more of a fast paced action like feel to it, i mean it wasn't even horror really, you were just in africa killing a bunch of black people that looked like they were infected with ebola. Resident evil 6 devastated me, i wasn't a huge fan of the skill point system and i mean it just didn't feel like a total horror game. With the original resident evil you'd be terrified over what was around the next corner or behind that creaky door, i'd sh!t myself with happiness if resident evil 7 brought back that feel.
Given how popular Resident Evil HD was that was already a good sign for Capcom to go back to the games roots. And now with Silent Hills been canceled which is a huge disappointment to survival horror fans, maybe Capcom will finally see that the genre has a chance to be truly reawakened to its former glory. But then again they may be so out of touch they see too many dollar signs instead of what fans truly want.
Maybe Capcom should reboot the series, the story is too convoluted now, I don't get what the hell happen anymore…
I doubt it.
Capcom already have a horror-themed RE and that's RE Revelation.
They're probably gonna stick with more action for the main series.
Are the other episodes up, how long are they?
I'm scared to check because the store breaks my PS3.
Resident Evil hasn't been scary for a while now. RE4 has some degree of scare with certain monsters, but it wasn't the same fear as turning and seeing an ominous figure standing beneath a dim light and twitching on the path you need to take to continue for example, it was more a "shit, I don't think I have enough weaponry, ammo and health to take down that monster I hate and is WAY overpowered, I hope it's slow enough to run away from", type of fear and that's a fear I could get in any game, Bloodborne for one.
Resident Evil was never in the same league as games like Amnesia and P.T for fear factor and no Resident Evil will replace P.T, that being said, maybe SOMA, the indie title we are waiting for will do that, they did and excellent job with Amnesia, that game genuinely had my palms sweaty.
I still want a VR Silent Hills though, it's a far more exciting prospect than a VR Resident Evil.
The new Resident Evil is called Bloodborne. Damn this game is scary. The Hemwick Charnel Lane reminds me a lot of RE4 – the last good (but not so much as RE 0-3) game in the series. After that it was a piss and I haven't bought any RE game since then.
No wait, I did – RE HD Remake.
Even I bought that first episode of Res Rev 2 on the sale. Hope it's good, but I wish it weren't 5 episodes I gotta wait fer.
Silent Hill has a curse.
Hey Kojima, how about Metal Gear Silent?

I don't know. The PT demo set the bar pretty high imo, and that was only a demo.
I thought RE6 was a great direction with poor execution. It needed more stability.
Resident Evil has sucked for years. As soon as they went away from the exploration and true horror and focused on a bunch of fast zombies and "twitch" action, I quit playing the series. They would have to do a complete reboot and go back to how RE2 played. That was my favorite and that game is actually why I bought a playstation to begin with. Up until that point, I was all about Nintendo and when I saw a friend playing RE2, I immediately put away my Nintendo 64 and bought a Playstation. I don't ever see RE being that relevant again.

RE2 was the last one that was scary to me and also my favorite. After 3 the series just wasn't the same.
