Guitar Hero Live was just announced and the gaming world is buzzing.
It's an ambitious endeavor but rival Harmonix isn't fazed. In fact, they welcome the challenge.
Studio Project Manager Daniel Sussman posted up a detailed blog post soon after Activision's announcement and he says Rock Band 4 will "set the bar" for music games. However, he doesn't want to bash the competition; in fact, he says he doesn't understand the need to "choose sides" in the Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band battle. Don't forget that Sussman worked on the early Guitar Hero productions, and he's just excited about their new title:
"I love what we're doing with Rock Band 4 and think we're creating the best game we've ever made, a product that will set the bar for what a music game can and should be," he said. "However, that's not the (whole) point. I love that Activision is planning to release a new Guitar Hero game. It's a validation of our decision to bring Rock Band back now–it's a sign that people are ready for music games (and rock music) to reclaim their spot in our cultural fabric."
Sussman added that he'd "like nothing more than for music gaming to dominate the charts once again." Back in 2009, the music/rhythm genre was valued at $2 billion, but the bottom fell out of the fad. Looks like we're seeing a revival!
Oh, and Sussman also wanted to clarify that Rock Band was never created for the express purpose of competing with Guitar Hero . Maybe not but they certainly became competitors, and it'll be interesting to see what happens with these two IPs in the new generation.
