Kojima Should Leave The Gaming Industry

Before you lose your sh**, read .

I'm not saying Hideo Kojima should ditch video games and never return. Nor am I saying he isn't a visionary and a masterful creative mind. What I'm saying is that it might help his career – and gaming in general – if he applied his talents elsewhere for a while.

In a lot of ways, I think even our best developers might feel stuck. Creative minds like to expand and blossom; they like to try new things and conquer new mediums. A successful author might try his hand at a stage play, for instance, while an accomplished musician might take a shot at painting. Creative people are like that, very often. Thing is, I think game designers might be typecast, so-to-speak, in that other creative minds believe game designers can only do one thing.

Wouldn't it be a feather in our industry's cap if one of our great minds produced a wonderful movie, or something like that? What if he lit up Broadway with something really special? What if he produced a great slew of short stories? Who knows what he's capable of; I don't know the man so I can't tell you what his dreams are, but I do know he's talked about leaving games behind for many years. I think he has a great many aspirations and honestly, I see no problem with him pursuing them.

I actually hope those dreams take him away from gaming for a while. I want him to prove that our great designers aren't only good for making video games. I want everyone to realize that the talent we have in this industry can and perhaps should translate to other artistic mediums. I'd very much like to see Kojima try something completely different. Shouldn't we give him a chance to do that? Won't gaming benefit from his advancement, even if he's not making games? I think so.

I totally agree, and I think one more reason is that gaming is seen as a very technical medium and so people tend to think of game designers more in a technical sense than an artistic one.

Virtual Reality is a new medium and i cant wait for Kojima to develop games for it.

I reckon he would be amazing at scripting or directing movies if he was given the chance. Bring something different. I'm sick of all these super hero and old movie reboots. Hollywood is officially out of ideas.

I think he'd be better for TV, like an HBO miniseries or something because his plots are often very complex and require more than the standard 2 hour runtime of a film.

I was thinking just like you Matt give Kojima a shot at an HBO level series and I think we might get a Masterpiece. He definitely needs the length a series provides. I can't see him being able to handle a movie's time constraint.

Netflix is where it's at.
They have money to burn and I'm sure would take a chance on something like that.

No. If he leaves then all we are left with is sequels and horrible "ideas" like The Order. If anything; we need him to change the formula like what he was poised to do with Silent Hill.

Him leaving the games industry would lead to another shadow era. Nomura left Final Fantasy and look how that turned out. Gamers need Kojima now more than ever, especially since most game companies are now run by people who have probably never touched a control pad.

You make some fair points, but at the end of the day i think this is his way out of metal gear!
Konami most likely wanted more metal gear and if kojima isn't directing the whole company gets death treats up the wahzoo and besides i think he's quite frankly sick of it.
Time for new ip's and if he wants to release a death metal album in his spare time i'll buy that too…or a whatever else he has in mind!

I think he's brilliant and would excel in almost any medium he put his passion into. I wonder how other industry leaders would see him if he decided to do something different. Would they treat him with the respect he deserves? Or would they look down on him in a way for being associated with video games? He should go and do whatever and wherever his passion takes him. I'm sure that would make a lot of people happy, especially himself.

You make some good points but personally i want to see him work on a new IP. It feels wrong that Metal Gear Solid is all we'll ever get to see of him in the gaming industry. I remember kojima once saying that he will create games until the day he dies, as George RR martin once said about writing. I hope its true, because even though its selfish, as a gamer i don't want to see him say good-bye.

Agree with you 100%. Kojima can try things in his spare time if he wants. But there is so much to accomplish in the gaming medium why change it if he's happy. If he's not obviously thats a whole different conversation.

you have a very good point i think that it would cool to see him succeed at something else so that we can say our industrys top designers can also do well at other things in the creative space

happy gaming

Sadly I'm not sure what'd he would do. I can't imagine him making films, he would need an editor with more of a back bone than he. Can you imagine a 3 hour movie of nothing but monologues. because that's what he seems best at. He really doesn't have a strong understanding of dialogue or the ability to convey an actual story visually as opposed to verbally. I think he should keep developing games but start with a new IP.
