Sadly, I’m Just Not Sure Nintendo Can Impress Me Anymore

There are certain memories I wouldn't give up for the world.

A few of those memories involve Nintendo. Thre's a damn good reason why the SNES is still hooked up in the bedroom, and a reason why I will defend Nintendo to the end.

But there's also a reason I haven't owned a Nintendo console in quite a long time. I've been tempted many times and a few times, I caved and tried something like the Wii. The N64 did impress me to some extent but I was in the midst of my RPG craze and as such, the N64 did little for me. The GameCube was just a colossal disappointment, especially compared with the beast that was the PlayStation 2. I knew the Wii was a gimmick and I knew the Wii U was an extension of the aforesaid gimmick and destined to fail.

And now, here comes another Nintendo console. Not much is known about the Nintendo NX just yet but I'm having difficulty summoning any enthusiasm. Maybe it has been too long since Nintendo has grabbed me. Maybe I'm too old. Maybe when I look at Nintendo games today, I wonder why I'd bother when I have…you know, grown-up games I have to catch up on. Yes, I get the old argument, "it's all about fun." And I understand the various definitions of "fun." I'm not saying Nintendo doesn't – or hasn't – offered viable forms of "fun" in the past. I'm simply saying they haven't enticed me in quite some time.

So here I am, wondering if Nintendo will do something interesting with the new machine. I also wonder if I'll ever play another Mario , Zelda , or Metroid . For some reason, I think they want to stay in the past in my brain…they're just so perfect there. Perhaps I shouldn't disturb them.

sounds like this console is going to reach up to the tech specs of the…ps2 lol. maaaaaaaybe ps3? or should i say psp or psvita. nintendo can only attend to kids and most of them now wanna play cod or minecraft.

of course the marios and zeldas have their place. i mean come on how many more times is he going to save that whore from bowser, cant he get a hint?

nintendo turning mobile? sure lets see how long that lasts since every single one of these mobile games are copy/paste off each other.

… The Wii U is more powerful than the PS3 and 360, but less so than the PS4 or Xbone. It's a strange "in-between" in terms of capability.

Still waiting for the day they give up on the console business and just focus on the games. It does seem to make sense, I think. They clearly don't know much about making consoles anymore, but their games are still really damn good.

Honestly, the GamePad is a great idea that was half-baked. Although not nearly as horrible as the Kinect; the latter is at least functional and can add genuine value to an experience.

damn, imagine mario or zelda on a ps4. or even a remake of their classic ones. well prolly see that fatser than ff7

The last console Nintendo made that I actually liked was the Gamecube. They've lost me as a customer thanks to their controls. I'm not into motion controls and I refuse to adapt to a controller larger than a Game Gear.

I love their handheld systems though. What a bizzaro decade it has been. Nintendo stopped making consoles I care about while consoles stopped producing RPGS I care about.

so many Gamecube fans totally ragged on the Xbox because of it's big controller back in the day.

Heheh
Seems like Xbox fans had the last laugh with Wii U's super colossal tablet pad =p

I don't even know what to think of the NX. It would have to be a very different beast, from a design standpoint.
If you look at Nintendo's console hardware sales, each and every console platform took a large drop in user-ship.
The Wii was an anomaly, but Wii U followed the same kind of massive loss of owners proceeding from the Gamecube and it's predecessors.
Really. If Nintendo released another console as they have been, statistically it'll sell about 5-6 million in the same amount of time that the Wii U had to reach it's 9 million.

This is how I feel about the FF7 remake that everybody wants. It's so perfect to me the way it is, I'd rather not have my precious nostalgic memories altered by what Square Enix has become.

Never even heard of this. NX? Are we sure it's a console? I wonder if there are any gimmicks left to pull out of the old hat to try to grab people. Maybe it's a wearable system, lol.

I think they should just make a darn next gen powerbox that plays normal games and their own library of kiddie games and classics with extremely great graphics and proper generation leaps. Imagine a Zelda that was up to date in every way.

I've never heard of it either, but nintendo does have an obsession with gimmicks and VR is all the rage these days…A console built around VR?

There will always be a place for Nintendo. Although I do believe they rely on too many of their established franchises and not enough new IPs.

Personally, of all the gaming companies, Nintendo has the greatest capability to push out amazing experiences; they just need to take a few more risks software-wise. Smash, Mario Kart, and classic platformers/Zelda will always have their place, but there just needs to be more AAA franchises and newer genres.

Nintendo at the moment is like the Rolling Stones, no one cares about their new stuff (although they do make the odd hit) but people cherish their old stuff.

Okay not no one, I was being pithy, but my point is they haven't innovated in years but their "prime" stuff was so good that they've kept their fan base.

Ben just keeps looking at the clock, waiting for the moment nintendo finally announces their withdrawal from the console market and focus solely on software.

I think nintendo is right where they feel comfortable. Just chalk it up to growing up, rather than wishing for nintendo to become something that doesn't seem like they want to.

Nintendo may not have the best console, but they have what it takes to make great games.
Many may have forgotten that Nintendo's games are always really really fun to play.
What Ninty needs now is more game for the Wii U.
The Wii U is fine as it is.

Yeah, the Wii U is fine. It still has yet to show Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, proper 3D Donkey Kong adventure please, and maybe a pokemon game. It would be weird to introduce a new console when these franchises have yet to make their Wii u gen debut.

When super Mario 64 and donkey Kong 64 is still the best version of their respective franchises for me, there's no hope that Nintendo can win me back. Banjo Kazooie, Star Fox 64, Zelda, Goldeneye, the N64 was actually awesome for me. The only game that truly evolved and got better imo is the mario kart series. I guess Zelda is pretty good too, but not to the point that it triumphs Majoras Mask.

But anyway, what's with this NX stuff. Is this a rumor or what?

No desire for a new system. Not unless I get refunded for my WiiU (not after spending for the Wii, and shortly there after the Wii U, uh uh). Wii U should have been the Wii. They were obsessed with the casual gamers, and that failed them. Should have had two systems. One for the true gamers, one to be the Fisher Price version of big boy toys.

I sold my WIi-U, after seeing the utters poor design choices implemented in what could have been a momentous game of Xenoblade Chronicles X. For me, replacing a well written lead character for a created muted has doomed it. I just can't tolerate a blank character with no involvement in the story. I still have my Wii hooked up to play the masterpiece of Xeonblade Chronicles but I was really riding on that game and it let me down,

As for anew console this early… It's just too soon Nintendo, but I guess if hey can get away with a 'New 3DS' which has exclusive games all prior 3DS models can't play they'll also be able to get away with this.

Don't know if Nintendo can ever win back those that arent into them. I dont want Nintendo to kowtow to the low attention span gamers who can only enjoy games , even if they're mediocre, as long as it has fancy graphics, cutscenes to have a REASON to go point A to B, push x to win or just push forward on the left analog gameplay,, soft physics and the like. I want them to keep putting gameplay above all else.

Though, I'd say that the Wii U was an absolute for any real gamers that wanted to make their next gen experience more well rounded, especially given the not so impressive landscape of the two other consoles.

The only decent thing to ever happen from Nintendo imo was the introduction of Resident Evil 4 and the RE remake. Other than those the company and their games has never, ever appealed to me and most likely never will.

I think Nintendo's biggest problem is marketing. I know they have a bunch of games, but I don't know any beyond the main traditional titles (Mario, Zelda, Metroid) and a couple other hits, like Xenoblade Chronicles.

I don't think it's because I don't own it, either. I haven't owned an XBOX console in almost as long as I haven't owned a Nintendo console. (I had a gamecube, and I had a 360 early on) But I know about a TON of stuff on XBOX despite not owning one. If I want to learn about Nintendo, I have to actively seek that information out.

People knew about Wii, obviously. Every old folks home has one, for craps sake. But no one seems to know anything about the WiiU. I didn't. I had to go look it up. And I watched some video, and they totally have some solid games. Enough so that I actually feel tempted to get one. But I think, based on what I hear from people who aren't as plugged into the online community, which is most gamers, that the word on the street is that the controller is stupid and it's far weaker than PS4 and XB1. (Whether true or not is irrelevant. It's what people think)

So, yeah… I think they have the software support. But they don't seem to have the culture. And part of me wonders if a lot of the super casual crowd that got a Wii would be completely satisfied with just the Wii for another few years.

Anyways, excuse the verbal diarhea, as I just kinda spewed out thoughts as they came and didn't have a main conclusion to center my writing around. But in short, it comes down to needing to create some semblance of culture that would render the technical prowess of the other two consoles irrelevant. I think they may have the tools in place, and the culture may exist, but you have to reach many more than the online community. When compared to how many people actually purchase consoles, the online community is quite small.

True, ninty info is like super secret. I only see what games they have when Amazon recommends them and I'm like "hey, that's a dumb place to have that game it would sell more on PS4"

Can't say I ever was a Nintendo fan. Never bought any of the systems but I had friends who invited me over to play on them. I got bored real quick unfortunately for my friends. Mario… I just did not get it. I did not find them fun. I suppose they were just not my thing.

Of late myself I have realized I think I am starting that journey that maybe I have had my fill of games since its rare now that out of all the games released available to me there is one or two that really excite me. That has made me very selective these days and with that reduces the time I play on any of the systems I own.

I've played a lot of games since my pinball days and when Space Invaders in the arcade blew me away as a kid. There are a lot of games between now and then. Might be why story usually takes precedence for me and then gameplay and graphics.

Of late I have been getting the urge to play some pinball. Simple, interactive… and fun. Too bad those days of just putting a quarter in the slot are pretty much gone.

Keep playing!

I actually sold my ps4 for a wii u. Something I honestly never thought I would do!!! I have to say though. I haven't had so much fun gaming in quite a long time!!! The main reason I say this is because my kids are able to enjoy them with me now. That's actually the main reason I sold my ps4. It's unfortunate but I'm not impressed really by any games out for with of the heavy hitters right now. A year and a half in and still really nothing!!! It's really unfortunate because I'm totally a Sony fan! Having said that, the wii u is actually impressive to me. Sure it can be gimmicky in a lot of ways but some of the games are sooooooooo much fun to play!!! I'll tell you what… Play bayonetta 2 and tell me it feels gimmicky! I guess my problem is now that I have kids and a full time job and other hobbies such as djing… When I have the time to game I'm either too tired or my kids are around and I can't play the games I want to because they aren't kid friendly. The way I see it is. I'll get the ps4 again in a year or two when there are actually games to play. The system will most likely cost less and all the games will be less and I'll have a much larger back log to play to keep me busy!! Win/win!!!

Order 1886
TLoU Remaster
Blood borne is next week.

Love me some PS but also love the WiiU – the controller might be gimmicky but damn, the off screen play is absolutely superb – way, way, better than the laggy mess that is my Vita or Xperia tablet that I bought specially for PS4 off screen. It's super smooth and has never, for a single second, lagged.

I bought 2 PS4s on release, one for the lounge, one for the bedroom and sadly they've largely gathered dust.

The WiiU on the other hand – i just keep finding fun things to play on it – FUN ! Remember that?

Currently looking forward to Splatoon, a multi player shooter that isn't about blood, guts and space marines.

Look to PS4 indie games like Olli Olli 2, Velocity 2x, Guacamole and more for retro-fun experiences. They're affordable and they play with the best of them.

by innovate you mean diversity aimed at more niche or hardcore competitive gamers.
They know their audience. No one accuses Disney for not making more horror, military dramas and sultry romances.

Edit; btw Nintendo just tried reaching out to those gamers and few cared. So no I'd say that's not what they need. For those paying attention Nintendo is alive and well. It's that their market majority now prefers a console in their hands.

Don't get me wrong, I'm just tired of Nintendo putting Mario in every single game, they are just milking the cow to much for my taste.

I know, Mario is iconic, but why not taking the time to create another popular character??

I always smile a bit when I see or hear someone deride Nintendo games for not being geared toward a mature audience… right before they jump back into games about space wars and dragons.

Asuno

Really? Using maturity as a term of approval?
“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves." -CS Lewis

Having realistic-graphics doesn't make them "grown up" games.
Games are an entertainment tool for any age regardless of maturity.
