As Of Now, What’s Your Most Anticipated Next-Gen Game?

Obviously, we haven't heard about all the launch titles for the PlayStation 4, and the new Xbox hasn't even been announced yet (May 21 is the day).

We really only know about a few next-generation projects, but it's enough to ask the interesting question- Which one intrigues you most? Which one is currently at the top of your next-gen priority list?

I suppose at this point, it's easy to say Killzone: Shadow Fall , which does look pretty amazing. But while I love a good shooter like everyone else, and I admit that Guerrilla's latest has a boatload of potential, I've been tiring of the genre lately. I'll still play it, of course, and I'm quite certain I'll love it. But of all the next-gen games I've seen previewed thus far, I'd say it's a toss-up between inFamous: Second Son and the Thief reboot. I'd think about adding Watch Dogs but that's a cross-generation title and I'm only considering true next-gen projects.

I know we haven't seen or heard much concerning the new inFamous , but I just adored the first two. And unless they really screw up the new entry, it could end up being one of the funnest games ever . We have heard a little more about the new Thief and I've respected every bit of that information. I love that Eidos Montreal is putting the primary focus on the single-player, and I love how they said what I've been screaming about for years: Not every game on earth has to have multiplayer. Plus, the other gameplay-related details have been very promising. Honestly, this should really appeal to veteran old-school gamers.

So what about you?

I think its too early to confirm but so far… My gut says infamous second son but my heart says the witcher 3. Never been a PC guy but always wanted to try the witcher games out, plus the game informer cover story made it sound so awesome.

As far as unconfirmed games go. Fallout 4 all the way. Other RPGs too, final fantasy definitely.

Watch Dogs is my most anticipated game, period. But if we're not counting cross gen games, then I'd probably have to go with Second Son. The trailer looked amazing and as cool as lightning is, it just doesn't compare to throwing fireballs!

The Witcher 3, the new Mass Effect series, and of course Dragon Age 3.

But if we include non-confirmed ones that's bound to happen it's easily and with no hint of doubt Fallout 4.

(I've just now realized how many ultra-quality RPGs are on their way during the next couple of years! This will be FANTASTIC!)

Xenoblade 2 without a doubt, the first Xenoblade proved how good JRPG's have the potential to be. Just everything about the game excelled. I just hope it stays as a traditional JRPG and not an online focused one which people have been theorizing Last thing I want is for it to turn out like White Knight Chronicles with online missions.

But I presume some of you might not be counting the Wii-U. So from what we have seen from the PS4… Watchdogs….I guess.

Temjin001

The Wii U isn't the 'next-gen' we're thinking of because it's actually 'this gen' just with a tablet controller. That doesn't count.

Temjin001

..and to think about it more, I think to claim a 'generation' that product needs to include the software that's on the forefront of defining quality-bleeding edge gaming entertainment of our day. To include the Wii U in that equation would be to include stuff like browser games, iOS, and Android games etc as 'generational.' They're not. They're largely appendages to what drives the gaming industry but few or none of which are part of the big leagues that drive progression of the form.

Semantics temjin. Its argued constantly by people on the internet, but its not really graphics that decide it. And it needs to be said that the Wii is definitely in the same generation as the ps3 and 360, xenoblade is the best example of this, after playing it you sort of feel all RPGs on ps3 are worse by comparison.

Its too bad xenoblade is more expensive then the console its sold for in most cases, cuz everyone here would love it and it'd end up on a lot of peoples top 5 lists(for RPGs and games this gen). Tho I don't have a Wii u, I plan on getting one for the next xenoblade and the next Zelda.

jRPG's have been suffering for several reasons on PS3, and hardware right now is the least of their concerns. As it is the game play of traditional jRPG's doesn't need copious amounts of power to push their design. They aren't on the forefront of anything. Similarly genres like fighting games are archaic in their implementation. They exist today not because they're redefining anything but because they're still entertaining after all of these years.

This isn't about graphics. It's processing and overall power. Games like Mass Effect, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, MGS4, Assassin's Creed, Batman Arkham City, Infamous, Bioshock Infinite, Gran Turismo 5, Red Dead Redemption, and Heavy Rain among several others could not be accomplished at the degree of immersion as they are now, or at best hope to deliver just a facsimile of the same experience on lesser hardware. This isn't just visuals but their very design. The high praise and profile of such franchises can be directly attributed to the power of the hardware that enabled them.

If you don't want to accept that and rather boast of your Xeno games as evidence of something that these current gen games are not, fine, but leave me alone because your argument is falling on def ears as I'll know you're missing the point 😉
and I don't care what random idiots of the internet have to say.

The Wii-U is part of the PS4/XBOX720 generation. As that is when it was released. One should note that even Sony has stated they don't see the PS4 as the successor to the PS3 – Which puts to question how big a jump will it really make.

I don't see why you are getting so aggressive over it and I resent being called a 'random idiot'. But if you will persist with 'def' ears, I shall not be willing to continue this conversation.

@ Wrote – I'd disagree on the Wii – most of the titles I played on it felt like PS2 titles. Hell, most of the titles I played on it weren't up to the standard of better PS2 titles, and many of the motion stuff wasn't done as well as the Eyetoy. It had its gems, but even the likes of Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy felt PS2 gen, not PS3/Xbox 360.

So Temjin's point holds I'd say. Calling Wii U Next Gen would be like calling the Ouya Next-gen. You can do it if you're only talking the timing of the release, but it's the nature of the software that defines a generation in the eyes of most gamers.

dmiitrie
dmiitrie

Because Nintendo has decided that they weren't interested in current hardware, release date should no longer be a deciding factir in what generation a consile belongs to. Placing the WiiU in the same gen as the ps4/720 is laughable, just as placing the Wii in the same gen as the ps3/360 is laughable.

People can go rounds on the differences between Xbox and play station, but at the end of the day, both give players a comparable experience. You can't say the same for the wii. To quote Sammy L, "it ain't the same ballpark, it ain't the same league, it ain't even the same f****** sport."

Ultimadream your supposition was that people may not be including the Wii U as part of the next-gen in this discussion. I confirmed that by making a pretense for the bleeding edge games and their dependence on hardware. Are you really trying to duck out by making a plea for chronology? Pathetic.
It should've been very apparent to you that my statement about idiots was in response to Wrote and not you. He tried to deflate my statement by pointing to 'people on the internet' as evidence of something.
His argument was fallacious in context of his evidence. That being Xenoblade and jRPGs. There's a reason so many of the third party games I listed never came to Wii. It wasn't just a matter of toning down the graphics. If that were the case we would've seen a lot more ports of popular franchises. The problem is, the majority of those games could not be done on Wii's inferior (aka) last-gen hardware. The Wii has never been in the same category as PS3 or 360 and that isn't about to change for the looming gen.

Don't take this as an insult to Xenoblade. I want to play that game as well. But I will not fool myself into thinking that the Wii is a co-equal to the PS3. It's more a toy now to me than anything.

btw, that PS4 comment was padded PR talk for trying to maintain significance for the PS3 while it's about to walk in the shadow of the PS4. It will be a profitable platform for SOny for quite some time. They're not about to claim game over for it anytime soon. The specs of the PS4 are known. The net processing of the console is generational. The memory and design philosophy behind it is more than generational. The PS4 is more dev friendly than even a PC. The system will do things never before possible on prior consoles. Make no mistake.

It's a bizarre choice, but mine is actually Knack. I feel like it's closer to a 3d platformer and I would enjoy a replay. I'm definitely gonna enjoy Second Son, but after I beat most AAA games, I usually shelf them. I don't think I'll do that with Knack. Also, The Witcher 3.

i have to go knack for 2 reasons.
1 ive always loved kids platformers, crash bandicoot, spyro the dragon, jack and daxter, sly cooper, ratchet and clank, all games in this genre, and among THE best games EVER made!!!!!
2 its being created by mark, the lead architect for the ps4 so no one knows the ins and outs better than him!
plus, well, all the above games, all the franchises who have carried playstation?
every single one he has worked on!
what a resume!
not even jesus has had a hand in so many epic successes!
so suffice to say expectations are through the roof!

after that id have to go with thief 4.
1 its such a unique styled game, its very dark and has a very unique art style to what were use to.
2 we dont have many hardcore stealth games, so its nice to see one of the biggest best stealth franchises of all time make a return!

i gotta go for the next zelda game, and also the next 3D mario game whatever it turns out to be.
zelda skyward sword is one of the best games EVER made!
such a masterpiece, i have not been sucked into a games story like that, since, well, EVER!
3D marios are always the pinnacle of game design, super mario galaxy 2 was a perfect example of this so i cant wait to see what there going to bring next.
hoping to see a zombiu sequel as well, such a creative unique game!
buggy as @#$% unfortunately, but still one hell of a awesome game!

I would go with knack because Mark helped create some of the better games of the past generations. He helped make the crash games, ratche and clank, and also jak series.

It's got to be GT6. I really have no ideas as to why this would be a PS3 title. It can't be. For God's sake, this is a game that takes a year to level up and save for the really good cars. Why would they release a game that players will be playing on PS3 for well into the PS4's initial life cycle. This makes no sense at all. Make it a launch game.

I'm w/ you Ben, inFamous and Thief are probably my most anticipated true next-gen titles currently announced. I'm also keeping an eye on Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, GTA V for cross-gens as well as a few other current gen that I hope will cross over. As things are going this holiday season is going to be a painful experience for my pocket book, good thing I've already started saving…

As for speculative titles, well there are far too many title's I'd love to see on new instalations of, some we know for certain are coming (Fallout 4, TES: VI, Darksiders 3, just to name a few) while others are more of a "cross fingers and hope SOMEONE pulls their head out and makes this game for me" list.

Here's to hoping my wallet can take all the strain…

Infamous by a mile. Killzone has me interested because it'll probably be a good tech-showcase title. I just have a hard time wanting to be real excited about a game from a genre that owns the hearts of so many fellow gamers this gen. I like FPS games. I do. But I wish the distribution of interests were a bit more even. I don't want a repeat of this gen in terms of what's hot and what's not.

So many great games it's hard to choose. Short (ish) list (in no particular order) would have to be:

inFamous: Second Son
Knack
Witcher 3
Thief
Metal Gear Solid 5/Ground Zeroes
Killzone: Shadowfall
Watch Dogs

I can see myself really enjoying any of the above as good as, or more than, the best games this gen. The Witness looks good too, but puzzle games aren't my thing. Plenty of reasons to be excited :).

An honourable mention to Europa Universalis 4 as well – they don't have 'gens' on PC, per se, but it'll be the next generation of Paradox's internal engine, and it's got a '4' in the title like the PS4 – does that count? :).
