MGSV Date Prematurely Announced: September 1, 2015

Update: Konami has just officially confirmed via press release that this date is correct.

Original Story:

You just can't keep a lid on these things.

A few days ago, Konami posted a countdown clock on the official MGSV website. Many thought the anticipated reveal would be a finalized release date.

Well, the clock hasn't finished counting down yet but IGN may have already leaked that date. The video in question is gone now but a NeoGAF member spotted it and gave us a screen capture: As you can see, it says Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will launch worldwide on September 1, 2015. That sounds about right, don't you think?

If you want a sample of the game and haven't tried it yet, there's always Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes . The Phantom Pain will be available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.

Great if true. Plenty of time to finish 'Arkham Knight' and 'Wild Hunt' beforehand.

Cannot wait for this game. I don't think i have ever been disappointed by an MGS game. Hideo Kojima always delivers imo. This is going to be huge.

I had my heart set on June but I can wait until September. I feel relief in knowing that everything is going well and Kojima is happy with the turnout. If anything it's just a shame that it was leaked, it was only 24 hours from being announced officially. I hope there is a new trailer of something for today as that would just raise my hype level to peak. 6 months isn't too long, I mean we're already in March and that has just swooped by. I know this will be worth the wait.

And just like the past 3 MGS games before it, this will be Kojima's last MGS!

Seriously… why bother saying it every time? It's getting old. And the Internet never forgets, so those words will just come back to bite you in the ass.

That said, MGS 5 is my most anticipated game for this year!!

Should I play this game even though I've never finished an MGS? I'm thinking it has been simplified enough for a tourist play now.

I'm not sure if it has been simplified, but there are more options than just pure stealth. You had no option in early MGSs but you started to get a whiff of something new in MGS4.

If the main character in here was Solid Snake I'd at least recommend you to finish or at least read up on MG1 & 2, MGS1, 2 and 4.

But since it's not I say go for it. This is to help fill (and probably open) another void in Big Boss/Naked Snake's story. If you end up liking it, you might be curious enough to finish the others in the end.

The simplicity in terms of gameplay depends on the difficulty you choose to play it on.

No! No no no no no no NO!

You simply cannot play this game without playing the others. It's named 5 for a reason. There is no excuse not to catch up on it. PS3 offers both every Canon Metal Gear game (Don't bring up Portable Ops please) available to play. I mean even if you didn't want to play the games set after the story of The Phantom Pain you'd still have to play 3 & Peace Walker & Ground Zeroes at the very least – But then 3 benefits better after playing 1 & 2, so you're better off just playing the series entirely.

Problem is Vivi that not everyone has 500 hours to play every MGS and get caught up. There must be a youtube video or something that summarizes the story so far. I mean I played MGS4 several times but it was so long ago that I forget most of the story now.

Honestly you should play it because it'll be a great game. But, if you've never finished any of them then you'll be lost in regards to the story

Don't you have a second chance to fix the mistake every time you break your stealth? I could handle that.

As far as the story goes, I have an incredible ability to recreate backstories based on current interactions.

world, every mgs is self contained with the story so you wont get that lost. BUT it may inspire you to go and play another one of the games. there will ALWAYS be more to a mgs story. dont listen to these guys. while i do agree that you should play the rest of the games, it is not that big a deal where you jump in the story at. the time line in these games is all over the place as it is. you have to play the games in some messed up order to get things chronologically anyway.

myself i am waiting to see if they give us the first part with plus, so i have not played the new game yet. i have missed one of the psp games but i own 1 2 3 and 4. all very worth playing. maybe you could go back and give them another chance. also if you have a gamecube or wii available the best version of mgs was on the gamecube. updated gameplay and added scenes. now i want to fire up that gamecube version.

I'll just re-illiterate this since it was brushed aside.. If the main character was Solid Snake (aka the main character from MG1-2 and MGS1-2 & 4) which it isn't in MGSV, then you would want to replay the older games to get the whole story on him.

But because this is Big Boss/Naked Snake (who we started playing as in MGS3) who we're playing as in MGSV it's not as important storywise. MGSV is meant to take place before MGS3. If you end up liking it, great. You can then get the HD Collection for PS3 which includes MGS2, 3 (which has MG1 & 2 included) & Peace Walker. Then MGS1 off the PSN store. You'll then see what you had missed out on.

To answer your last question World, yes, in the whole series you can redo any mistakes you have made. Either from hiding until the coast is clear or the usual game over and continuing after.

Brilliant, this means I can finally get GZ to fill the summer lull and not have to wait after.
