Not too surprising.
The Order: 1886 didn't score anywhere near as well as anticipated, but many gamers believe it was due more to critical bias and improper handling of the review.
As per our latest poll, the majority of our community members say critics did indeed screw things up. The overwhelming majority saw at least some bias in many so-called professional reviews, which developer Ready at Dawn really didn't deserve in our estimation. While the game has its flaws, it did seem as if critics docked the game simply be for being a linear, narrative-driven adventure. But we've tackled this plenty; it's time to move on.
Bloodborne comes out later this month and we're really hoping PlayStation 4 gets its first AAA exclusive. What do you think about the current state of available PS4 games? Are you disappointed or are you perfectly happy with the selection thus far? Let us know.
Related Game(s): The Order: 1886
I've been pretty content so far. Of course we went through this with the PS3 and other consoles as well. As we move through this year we will start to see more and more games and hopefully of a high quality.
I've got enough games to play and it's resulted in me passing up on The Order for now and possibly passing on Bloodborne later this month as well. Of course I'm not sold on Bloodborne 100% yet for other reasons as well, but it's going to be a good game, I know that, and I still may have to pass on it.
So things are good for me.
They certainly did. These people shouldn't be allowed to review games anymore. It's clear they let their personal bias get in the way.
By the way, I'm so glad we're still talking about this game. For Bio's sake. You know how much he loves these posts. Keep''em comin'!
Ise was breakin my heart man.
There's a lot riding on the Order. If the game can manage to sell well despite the approval of the critical majority then I'd say there's hope to break the model. But if critics are to be the gatekeepers of AAA success then they may continue to define the public's perception as to where they should spend their time and money. Something like the Order needs more than fringe acceptance to succeed from a marketing standpoint.

I'm way too drowned in Destiny to notice any other game right now… please help.. (feelsbad)
I got sucked back in somehow. It will take and intervention to stop me at this point. "Must get Gjallarhorn"!
@bigrailer19
I was slowly stepping away from Destiny until you asked me to assist in you in completing Crota's End.
One Red Death later, I started playing like crazy once again.
Max, Haha I took notice! You may get an invite soon! 😉
A few of my friends got the Suros Regime as a drop in the Nightfall!
Yeah… I'm pissed!
@bigrailer19 – That's fine. I have jellyhorn and will travel.
@big6 – That's a good gun. I have one of those, but it's fully ranked up so it's been sitting in storage.
I personally find the current state of PS4 games available underwhelming thus far. Excluding The Last of Us which is easily one of the best exclusive SONY has ever delivered (imo) there really isn't much else to wave our arms in the air about imo.
Not saying Killzone, The Order or Second Son aren't good games but they certainly aren't AAA+ either by any stretch, i mean most people are not going to buy consoles based off these games. Obviously this drought won't last forever though with Bloodborne, Street Fighter v and Uncharted 4 coming later but for now it's been disappointing imo.
It's a shame SONY couldn't reclaim some exclusive rights to some of it's old past third party exclusives like Tekken or Devil May Cry. It would be a good win if they could nab a big name like Tekken 7 for their console but oh well.
yeah it would be good for them, would definately move some units for sure
It just takes time. During the prior gen it took until Gears of War until we saw a glimpse of what that gen held in store for us. The year leading up to that game felt like hi-res ports. I imagine the startup time for this gen is longer. Games like Batman, uncharted, the new mass effect and more won't have one foot planted in the prior gen.
Actually. I think Oblivion may have launched first by a few months…. That game definetly made its presence known.
I just beat it today, holy crap what an incredible experience. Sure the gameplay was the same as last gen but that's the best story and storytelling in a game ever done.
I hope people stuck around after the credits for that extra bit.
I hope they don't let it end there, there's so much more material that needs to be resolved.
I think it's better than last gen cover shooters. The controls are perfect. Aside from the sticky cover. That could be improved.
Fine I'll buy it tomorrow! 😉
sounds like an epic experience that well worth the effort and money
It was a bit smoother but in principle its still a pop n cover shooter, though there were some neat additions and I think nobody is giving the weapons enough credit.
Those weapons all had a different heft, feel, and usefulness you don't always see. I loved the Thermite gun and the Arc gun.
Also if you are a graphics/engine buff it isn't just that the game has the best graphics of any game ever but watching those "soft" physics in action is very impressive. It makes it fundamentally different in a subtle way from something like an Unreal engine game.
Weapons are always one of the things critics turn to bashing when they've decided they don't like the game they're playing. I swear. Illusion is everything. Once that illusion of greatness breaks then it doesn't take long for the nitpicks and minor flaws to overide the tone of their review. To me it's the hallmark of an overriding bias. GoW Ascension got nailed similarly. People do it all the time too. That girlfriend that once seemed so perfect suddenly seems so flawed once the illusion breaks. What were once loveable quirks turn to annoyances.

My only complaint is that there are no character reflections. I'm sure they had a good reason for this but that was the only area lacking in the graphics in my opinion.
Just beat it again. About to get my first Platinum on PS4. Woohoo!
Same here, I platinumed on the first go through accidentally. (Well minus the 30 stuns with the flachion) but I got everything else beat it twice. Now what do it do with ? *cries in the corner*
Play it again! Speed run.
i suppose thats a bit of a pitty but you could still play a couple more times just for fun
I'm glad you enjoy it Jawknee, I'm thinking it's my Game of the Year. Yours is probably something Nintendo but it's nice to pull you back to your PS now and then 🙂
Great game. My GOTY, too soon. Too many games still yet to come this year. My GOTY will likely be Zelda Wii U or MGS5.
the game was not harshly marked because of its linearity, it was harshly marked because its so poorly done and extremely out of date!
a perfect instance the invisible line AI.
f*cking ps2 games use to do that where you could sit in cover and kill all the enemies and you would not be able to progress, new waves would not generate, until you hit a magical marker then all of a sudden 1000 enemies magically appear right in front of you and you of course die.
one level springs to mind the bridge where galahad goes apesh*t and ignores everyone racing down the bridge towards the end of that level your behind a bus killing enemies, and atop the bus theres a rocket launcher dude but he does not spawn till your right in front of the bus out in the open ready to get blasted to the moon.
sit behind the bus in cover where you kill everyone else and he wont spawn, you have to come out of cover and stand right in front of him to get him to spawn.
im sorry, but this game is so poorly done and outdated it deserves all the flack it got.
theres a reason why games stopped doing this TEN F*CKING YEARS AGO!!!!!!!!!!!
the order may look like a ps4 game, but it plays like a ps2 game, and that's why its been so harshly reviewed.
only if this generation could get it through their thick skulls that ooooooo perrrrrty is not all a game needs to be.
Name me a linear TPS that doesn't do that. A lot of those moments are scripted like that so you experience the game and story how they designed it, they're called set pieces.
did you ever consider maybepeople still like that kind of thing ever if it is old fashioned from like 10 years ago in the ps2 era that when some games were great that doesn't mean that out cos they are dated game styles, that they are crap. but hey thats just me and my personal taste we can agree to disagree okayi know things do need to move forward but maybe just not everything all at once… i'll leave it at that.
He spawned for me while I was far enough away to get right into cover.
The air support sentinel 3 even warns you that there is artillery ahead.
Yes there is a so called "magic" spot but unless you are a scrub you have plenty of time to get into the shed that is to his left by sprinting forward. Even in hard mode he wont 1 shot you.
This is almost as silly as your completely ridiculous Dark Souls criticisms.
lol, thanks for the laugh blank line!
You're off your medication again.
@_________,
I'm just waiting here until the new Gears of War comes out and wait for your praise and comments on it.
Never mind that it'll be exactly like all the other Gears game before it, and also like The Order. (which really isn't a bad thing at all. If it's good, it's good)
But you're gonna blindly love the shit out of it cuz it's on your platform of choice.
I had a lot of fun with it. Great story and graphics, and I really liked a few of those guns. It didn't do anything new really, but what was there was mostly good. Reading some of those reviews again after platinuming the game is hilarious.
I'm pretty satisfied with my game selection right now at this point in the generation. It just feels like theres less new this gen. The Order is the only PS4 game I have that's not also available for last gen, or a sequel to an established franchise. By this point in the PS3s life I had a lot more games that were brand new franchises and only available for that gen, like Resistance, Uncharted and Assassins Creed. Order was close, but that's really the only one.
yeah i would say that the game selection isn't fantastic but then again i can't complain either so its okay i got no problems so that where i stand. and also yeah alot of new game series were started in the ps3 gen that haven't come forward yet(minus infamous and killzone and LBP) but then these games that have come are mostly new IP's which is good we need new stuff coming along all the time or things would get stale really quickly all the time and we always welcome new and then theres some additions to some of the good old series(unchartered,GoW,GT,rachet, modnation, motorstorm etc.) that have yet to come to ps4 and some of those are on the way =D and more need to come
still dying to get my hands on LBP 3

Long live Thermite!
I haven't played it yet but I will. I got distracted by a 35 dollar dragon age: inquisition.
yeah i haven't either got 30 infamous end of 2014 but i will get the order when i can
I am enjoying The Order 1886 much more then the latest Dragon Age and Assassins Creed games.
Can't say the critics got it very wrong(75 on Metacritic at max) especially when based on what was done last gen in the third person shooter realm with Gears and Uncharted. Hell, even games like Binary Domain offer more strategy, enemy variety, and a couple interesting nuances on its overall experience. To me, Wolfenstein: The New Order is what The Order: 1886 should have been. A great alternative history single player adventure that while not breaking the mold, ticks all of the boxes that we've come to expect and manages up great length, variety, AND story. And to me Wolfenstein is super solid 8 game.
The Order's story is pretty good, nothing to write home about. But I can see how people can claim it greatness compared to an open world, though that's the issue. There's a growing sect of gamers that lack the attention span to have a story dispersed over many hours of gameplay. They lose focus and are unable to keep the story together through the entirety. They don't want to have to remember a crucial conversation 10 hours prior and compile that with lore and tidbits given by NPC conversation. These gamers need it crammed into their cerebrum with very little time wasted: cutscene, action, cutscene, action, cutscene, action, cutscene, cutscene, ac- no, another cutscene, action. There are many open world games that blow The Order away in terms of story; it's just not delivered properly for some.
As far as the PS4, it's got a hell of a long way to go. Those days of absolute exclusive dominance may be behind us, people. We'll see in tue next year or two. Right now, the Wii U reigns supreme in that category by a large margin.
Oh, you almost had me there… but then you referenced Binary Domain.
I had high hopes that game. Bought it. Played it. Was shit. Abandoned it.
Sigh… I really wish Japanese developers would stop perpetuating western stereotypes in their games. It's annoying and lame!
Vanquish was bad for that, too. Except, I forgave them because the game was so awesome otherwise.
Really big6? I loved Binary Domain, it had an awesome story and the gameplay was fantastically varied. One of the best TPS games I have played
I like angry Joe review for this game…
