I made it abundantly clear in my review :
Far too many critics messed this one up.
We saw far too much subjectivity passed off as fact; i.e., the nasty and erroneous belief that open-world is simply superior to a linear structure, that any cut-scene longer than a few minutes is now considered "too long" (and consequently, a huge "flaw"), etc. We also saw more evidence that games without multiplayer and games that aren't sandbox-oriented are quite simply treated unfairly by the critical community.
I've got just one thing to say to developer Ready at Dawn: Ignore this sh**. I'm sorry it has hurt the scores for The Order: 1886 , and I'm sorry the game suffered through such a hugely exaggerated – and often completely false – series of negative headlines prior to launch. Inevitably, I expect all this to have a negative impact on sales (even though it has debuted at #1 in the UK ). But if you are cleared to make a sequel, do not let this mess hurt the next project.
Don't kowtow; don't bend and scrape; stick to your guns. You want to create a linear, narrative-driven adventure and there is nothing wrong with that . No, it doesn't need multiplayer; no, it doesn't need to be longer, and don't listen to this tripe about the pacing. The pacing is excellent; the only "pacing" twitch gamers complain about is the fact that they can't run around and do whatever they want every second of the game. Ignore it all, RAD.
As you've probably seen from a very vocal contingent of fans, and despite what some critics and journalists want everyone to believe (that linear is "inferior"), there are still plenty of people who appreciate what you're trying to do. As such, stick to the plan. Now, we'll all welcome better AI, fewer QTEs, a more robust stealth mechanic, a less predictable story, etc. By all means, we're not saying you shouldn't address these shortcomings; they're precisely why The Order isn't the AAA PS4 exclusive it could've been.
But just fix those things; don't change what this new IP is about. Please don't. Not every gamer in the world only cares about multiplayer, open-world, etc. I promise.
Related Game(s): The Order: 1886
I'm all for a sequel but I'd first want a GoW from them for my Vita.
(Shakes fist at Sony)
so Ben, I trust you've posted this article up with them N4G folk to draw in the haters for a beat down?
yeah totally man could agree more
Well that's one way to disagree.
sorry then, i just want a dedicated vita GoW like they did on the psp and i also think that the order will get another game big deal
but
happy gaming
I bet Ben doesn't want them to give up since we need more SP gaming experiences, and pissing off N4G is just always a plus.
World, I actually visited N4G last night. I was surprised to find a number of positive articles about the Order, including also one from your old stomping grounds OnlySP
current stomping grounds 🙂
Yeah RAD please make more mediocre shooter, we can't get enough of it, make the gameplay short but make the cutscenes 100 hours long, and more QTE please…
so you played it?
No he didn't, he is waiting for the Xbox version 😉

That's your first mistake right there, identifying the game as a shooter.
i think that the order will get another game cos it looked like a decent game and from what i've heard its got the makings for more games down the line
happy gaming
It won't hurt, there will be no sequel I guess 🙂
Well the sequel will depend on sales but I think they have an excellent foundation for a great new franchise this generation.
Not necessarily. If I recall the first inFamous game wasn't exactly a huge seller.
In the golden era of turn-based rpgs, a huge amount of gamers/peers in my circle were against them. They said that it was a boring and antiquated mechanic. Years later, this mechanic seems to be fighting a losing battle for survival. With so many detractors for linear games with emphasis on story, like turn-based rpgs, I worry that developers are now reluctant to make such games.
It's so frustrating that developers are making games for my personal tastes and a huge and rather vocal part of the gaming community is against these types of games.
Yeah, let's encourage this. We all can sit and play multiplayer open-world action games with rpg and stealth elements where the story is told within the game through letters and recordings we find along the way. (Add more elements if you see where I'm going with this). Every game should follow this model.
no hint of sacrcasim there at the end but i feel you man my thing has been character/action or platformer games aren't as big as they used to be like on the ps2
I'd support a sequel. I hate when new IPs die for stupid reasons. Hell, even high scoring good selling ones die just because they don't smash the 4 million barrier.
You need a number after your name to sell most of the time and The Order 2 would have the ability to fine tune the experience and grab for the 9.
Great game.
Unfortunately Order is exactly the kind of game that needs way more than a million or two full priced copies to sell to be profitable.
yeah definately couldn't agree more
Thankfully I don't listen to the media. I am pretty good judge of quality. Also the subject matter really interests me. Reading every newspaper was great. The Order 1886 has a lot that I like. It did have it's issues with shoehorned in QTEs that didn't belong in some places hindered the pacing. That is why I gave it a solid 9 for a score instead of a 10. This game was outstanding and everything else….graphics, sound, control, story were terrific! I finished the game on hard and got the Platinum in 18 hours. Looking forward to my next play through with my red outfit and Thermite Rifle. We will see a sequel 1887, that you can count on. R@D deserves a lot of credit for doing something THEY wanted to do and doing it well.
I actually like the QTE's. Reminds me of Resident Evil 4. Who didn't love Resident evil 4?
well now you mad me want to game really bad
The Order was fun for awhile but I had to trade it in. I enjoyed it at least. The graphics are beyond anything I've seen thus far. Plus the story is not that bad. I believe the vampires were a major plothole though, but that may be cleared up in the sequel if there is one.
thanks for the spoiler
Put spoilers in your comment next time. The plot hole you speak of isn't really a plot hole.
HOLY MOTHER OF GAMING! How about a spoiler tag! Stupid post that could ruin it for other potential buyers. It wasn't a plot hole either. It was leading to something more in 1887. So much happened and is happening in 1886 that is so important that it will need to be addressed in 1887.
… but then it can't really be a spoiler can it, guys? 🙂

It is if people haven't gotten to that section yet @beamboom. I've played it and beat it countless times and yet haven't posted spoilers.
All he said is that there are vampires. That's not what I call that a spoiler, at least not of a magnitude to scream up about. The vampires are even discussed in the comments on the review page.

Yet he could have placed a spoiler tag. Is it that hard to do so? No it isn't, especially for people who have yet to play it.
It is a spoiler, you don't eve know they are in the game for a while. Its not a huge spoiler but still in a game that is about story and the unraveling of it giving anything away is a chode move.
Xenris, dude, you are one of those who mention the vampires in the comments on the review, as a suggested versus mode.
So it's a minor spoiler, all I'm saying is that the "OMG SPOILER OMG OMG" reaction is a bit over-dramatic.

Vampires and werewolves together?
Whodakthunkit? That never happens. =p
Speaking of werewolves and vampires, a superior offering of Castlevania is on sale for Vita right now. It includes also a remastered version of Symphony of the Night.
D*ck move. I'm only on chapter IV. Thanks for spoiling part of the story. Even if you guys think its a small detail it would have been nice to find it on my own.

I didn't know there were vampires. So kind of sucks that I found out this way. It's a spoiler. Beam isn't interested in this game so it's not as crucial to him.
I really apologize for that. I thought nothing of it until later today. I'll remember from now on NOT to do that… Can't change it now and the damage has already been done. Again, really sorry guys.

😉
It's ultimately Sonys decision and not RAD's, isn't it?
just hope they have enough brains to make another one even if this one deosn't sell as well as we or they would like
I hope the game sells enough to break even atleast… Def would like a sequel
Completed it and traded it as I wouldn't play it again.
I enjoyed that I did. Thought it looked great. Sound was good too.
If you did play it again can you skip the cut scenes the second time around as I wouldn't want to sit through them again.
16 levels yet some of them are just cut scenes.
Left open for a Sequel. I'd buy the sequel as I enjoyed this game.
When the media steps the hell up and stops reporting rumors with a wink, then this type of garbage will stop. Also, we gamers, too. I'm just as guilty, clicking to read and comment. I'm done with wallowing in trash. Give me facts. And just the facts. Not like FF15, where every indication is that it is in fact a RPG, yet I still read people claim it's not while reporting on it.
Ready At Dawn made a very good game that was crushed under the weight of hype. Just like Destiny. Alot of the criticism is unfounded, but some of it is spot on. This game didn't attempt to reinvent the wheel but it didn't even attempt to make a slightly better one. AI, too many QTE, piss weak boss fights hampered by an unwavering control scheme, too many little cutscenes just to walk a hallway( it's not the 6 minute cutscenes, it's the thousand 5 second scenes that hamper immersion) and not enough enemy variety are valid and will hopefully be addressed in the sequel. Not saying go open world, but a scene where I can maybe hunt a few lycans (or other supernaturalspecies) in a 5 or 6 block radius, using a Tesla device or my own Knight training wouldn't be bad at all. I'm against any sort of competitive multiplayer in this series. It doesn't need it.
RAD, if there is any criticism you really need to heed it's this: Make EVERY game like it's your last..

This game deserves a sequel. People are trippin with the hate and negative reactions to this game. Not everything has to be open world like Far Cry or GTA. It's actually refreshing game to play when I look at my library which consists of mostly military FPS or open world TPS. Scripted as this game might be, it's still a technical powerhouse and the controls are some of the best I've come across since The Last of Us.
Also this whining about the QTE's is over blown. Yes there are a lot of QTE's but that's half of the gameplay in games like God of War and all of the gameplay in Heavy Rain. Didn't hear people complain that much about the QTE's in those games. In my opinion people were too invested in hating this game before even playing it so now maybe they feel it would look foolish of them to actually play the game and admit they were wrong.
Last edited by Jawknee on 2/25/2015 2:18:03 PM
Couldn't have said it better Jawknee… QTEs are ok if they are done right and I wasn't bothered by any of it especially after playing games like the 2 you mention… Ppl seem to focus more on the negative things about this game when it has more positive things about it then negative
I think they have a solid foundation to build upon.
If they can accept the critic shortcomings and build from there I would like:
A longer campaign.
Option to play the campaign with online coop game play.
Online competitive multiplayer with humans vs humans (Same abilities gameplay) and Humans vs Werewolves, vampires (Diferent abilities game play)
A Horde mode online coop gameplay.
Pared down QTE.
Skipable cutscenes after you beat the game.
I think with those additions it can justify a 60 Price tag at launch and plenty of replay value.
NO CO OP! Not every game needs co op. Co op ruined Residented Evil. Though I wouldn't be opposed to a separate MP mode.

I wasn't thinking Resident Evil coop where there has to be another player at all times or it is AI contrilled (Sucks)
I was thinking more like Gears of War coop where you can play alone and if you play coop your friend magically appears to play. There is no baby sitting your AI friend when you play by yourself.
