Sony Hints At Agreeable PS4 Price

We still don't know the price of the upcoming PlayStation 4, but we've got a hint from Sony Worldwide Studios president Michael Denny.

It's a relatively vague hint, but it's still a hint: In speaking to Edge , Denny elaborated on the five-year planning process for the PS4, and added a little tidbit about the price. He said it will appeal to gamers "in the broadest sense."

Denny said that the company had looked to the past to learn from their mistakes, and they also wanted to focus on their strengths. They basically looked at every PlayStation console launch and the challenges they faced with the PS3. As for the price-

"There’s plenty of time, we've got lots of information yet to give out on PlayStation 4. The initial announcement phase that we’re in now is just to explain the vision to everybody. Part of that vision is we have created a console absolutely focused on gamers–and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well. I think to some extent I can ask you to draw your own conclusions."

If we've all forgotten, the PS3 launched in 2006 with a $499 price tag for the 20GB model and a $599 cost for the more popular 60GB version. The price was deemed way too high by many; this time around, rumors have included two models for the PS4 as well, but the prices would be lower. Perhaps there will be a $420 and a $520 system, as some have suggested. Hopefully, the official pricing will be revealed at E3 in a few months.

I'm predicting $450. Not cheap, per se, but doable for us early adopters who are increasingly chomping at the bit for PS4. If they get the price much lower than that, I'd be very impressed.

I also wonder if Sony would be interested in offering a discount for people who sign up for, say, a two year PS-plus subscription? That could be a great way to lower the barrier of entry for getting the console, and would also encourage customers to invest, both financially and emotionally, in the PlayStation ecosystem. Hmm…

I'm thinking they are going to try and come in at $399. I think it's doable based on AMD components will help tremendously with price. Blu-ray players are dirt cheap now so I think $399 is doable.

There is some speculation that a subsidised PS4 can make it to market. If Sony does something like this then the price may drop even further. Imagine a $199 PS4. I would jump on that. I'm vested in Plus till 2017 so this would be perfect. Unless they were to only make something like that available to NEW subscriptions. We shall soon see. So far so good Sony. Keep it up!

How the hell did you get 4 years of Plus?

That's about tops for me ($450). I've already proclaimed my day-one adopter status. But any higher and I've got no problem being a day 200 or 300 adopter. Me loves my PS3 anyway and I've got at least a year's worth of games to finish that I've gotten about 15% of the way in.

soo ppl complained about 599 being too high (which it was) but if they announce one at 520 ppl will be happy? Im sorry but if i was one of those who thought 599 was too high and 80 dollar discount isnt gonna make me jump for joy lol.

Luckily i have the money now that even if it was 599 i could still buy it.. but for those who had a problem with 599, 520 isnt gonna change their minds

I like agreeable pricing. I also like that a Soul Sacrifice demo hits PSN today. I also like chocolate pudding cups and roundhouse kicks to the face =p

Do you like getting roundhouse kicks to your face or you like watching other people getting roundhouse kicks to their face? Just clearing that up… :p

E3 looms large already. I hope we get to see the system too, they seem to not have agreed on that yet.

Hope they pull off a base price at $299 and premium model $399, it sounds accurate, the PS3 slim hit store shelves at a $299 price point.

I'm sure that the PS4 will be priced reasonably, at least that is the impression that Sony keeps giving in its repeated thinly veiled hints when pressed about the subject.

I will have over $1000 saved back by the time that the PS4 comes out, and that is after my college tuition bill for the Fall semester is paid for, and this money is kept separate from my mortgage, car, utility, and grocery bill money.

In other words, I'm ready for PS4!

Well when they say gamer in the broadest sense, that tells me that the PS4 is going to have everything for all aspects of those who play games either casually/socially or hardcore. That scares me a little. Only that if they are trying to be everything to everyone, the price tag could be comparably high to meet that demand. And if not, it will be just the basic offers to cover all bases, keeping the price low. That could be the difference between the choice of two price tagged PS4's.

Regardless for me, I am not in the market to spend even $400 on the PS4 until its tried and tested by the consumer. Along with an impressive launch game library. That excludes the transfer of existing PSN game or classic games they may or may not convert over to work off the PS4 either cloud or otherwise. I mean new games for both existing or new franchises.

Not being pessimistic here, just watching how and where I would spend my money. I don't need the PS4 on launch, but maybe in a few years once the its out there and it has entertainment value for my tastes.

Right now, Sony is in marketing and sale phase to get consumers interested, excited, and to get their credit cards ready. And admitting they made a mistake with the PS3 and have learnt their lesson. I will remain in shopper mode. Look but don't buy, until I see the whole product and what it offers. I don't need to be first.

That all aside, this is going to be a Sony Year and I am sure they have a hit. Fingers crossed, spin around 3 times, spit over shoulder.

Keep Playing!

It would behoove them to sell one without the goofy camera for cheaper, then if people decide they just can't live without it because of all the great games that use it (lol yeah right) they can go ahead and overcharge for a separate camera.

I would love to see a $399 PS 4 base model, maybe $60 for a game.

I have been busy doing surveys and saving up my Gamestop credit just in case the PS4 was going to cost $1000. After seeing the PS3 at $599.99, you can't blame me.

dont care what it costs as long as it feels worth it!
$ony really need to put all their efforts in making as many as possible, and if that goes well hopefully that will open up the possibility of a worldwide launch.
only reason why i havent put my preorder down yet, dont want to put money down then find out were getting it months later, having me want to go import it.

With no ps or ps2 built in backwards compatibility (yeah you knew I (& other people) was going there) what do I care?

Backward compatability as far back as PS/PS2 is kinda pushing it a bit for a new console, but I can see possibly PS3 compatable. When the PS4 comes out, there aren't going to be that many games available at that time and most of us will have a slew of PS3 games lying around.

I'm gonna guess $450, but we'll see. And I'm also in no rush as I have quite a few ps3 games to go thru. There's even a few ps2 and ps1 games I wanna get to as well

$400 max for the entry model, wouldn't be at all surprised if $50-$100 lower given the hardware they're using. Anything over $400 for said entry model would be shocking IMO.

The Next XBox's price might be a factor but the WiiU's certainly won't.
