Prepare Your PS4 HD: The Witcher 3 Will Need About 50GB

If you're an active PlayStation 4 user, you better start uninstalling some stuff.

That's because developer CD Projekt Red has confirmed that the upcoming RPG, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt , will require 50GB of hard drive space .

The studio says 50GB is a "ballpark figure" but that's all we really need to know. This means it'll be one of the biggest installs of the new generation thus far, although let's not forget that PS4 launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall came in at nearly 48GB, and last year's Assassin's Creed Unity eats up 40GB. Obviously, this is a gigantic game we're talking about; The Witcher 3 is going to be downright massive. Hence, the file size isn't too surprising.

And besides, deleting and installing data is a lot easier on PS4 as opposed to PS3. No biggie, right? Wild Hunt is set to launch on May 19 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Tis faster to read an HDD than a BD.

Every physical ps4 game dumps to the hdd anyway Caesar so there's no advantage in that regard.

Because they want you to buy another new hard drive…

Actually, that really isn't as bad as it sounds. I remember one of my biggest concerns before having a ps4 was HDD space, but the good news is that installing a game from discs takes barely a couple of minutes, it's so quick that I genuinely wouldn't mind uninstalling games, unlike with my PS3 which has its hard drive full due to my reluctance. If anything buying downloads is where it becomes a problem, because downloading the install takes much longer. So don't worry about it too much. I have 9 games on my HDD and I haven't had to delete any yet.

There is one big perk for getting Witcher III on PSN. Pre-order it and get an instant 10% off. $53.99 is a better price.

TLoU Remaster was also near 50GB.

GTA5 is 52GB. What I don't understand is why Resident Evil ReRemake is 15gb.

Unity is actually 50gb lol

KZ Shadowfall, from the disk, is 50gb.

Dragon Age is 47gb.

KZSF is only 41.06 and that includes all the DLC.

Just the realization to some that 500gbs on a ps4 is relatively tiny.

I need to check if the online updates and the dumped disc data are seperate. If so one can safely delete their game data whenever and not worry about reinstalling updates when coming back to it.

sad to say that its not like the ps3 at all. all dlc, updates, and the game are in that one game file. delete that and you delete everything but the game saves. its damn annoying. battlefield 4 with all dlcs is around 63gb. i wanted to delete some dlcs when hardline comes so that i could free up space, bet hardline will be tha same size as bf4. dice pretty much nerfed the dlc guns and equipment to hell anyway. damn camper crybabies. you dont want go get hit by a missile, move spots.

They should have foreseen that and had the updates separate, obviously people would need to delete games on the fly all the time.

yea, huge mistake. It seems to me though it's something they could eventually fix on a future firmware update and on newer software or updated software.

I'm already out of space. I have only 71GB left. Ima have to invest in a bigger HDD. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm want to get at least 2TB.

This is what I have. No regrets.

You have to carefully remove the HDD from the housing though. It ain't too hard. You can even put your old 500gb back into the housing and use it as an external HDD. Just like I have.

Edit: There are YouTube videos out there as well for tutorials.

changing drives is exactly the same as on ps3. same problem too, really tight screws. if you did it for ps3, youll know what to expect.

Good idea Killa though I imagine removing the drive from the houseing voids the warranty?

Yea, I've taken a look under the hood so to speak. Looks simple. Removing the screws was easy enough too. Just wondering what the best brand for the money is.

It probably does void the warranty. I've had that HDD on my Ps4 since Nov and have had no issues.

Ima assume it does. But it would be a nice thing to be able to reuse the housing with the old ps4 HDD. I need a bigger external HDD for my Wii U. It also looks to be cheaper than just buying the HDD by itself.

So Killa, I took your suggestion and got a drive like this. Slightly different but it's supposed to perform the same. My question is did you notice any performance dips? It takes for ever for textures to load in online matches and even took a few seconds too long for the textures to load in The Last of Us when I first booted it up. Taking waaaay longer to reinstall GTA5 than it did when the stock drive. You have this issue?

Jawknee, when you're installing, is it physical or digital?

Because when I'm installing digital games it takes foreeeeeeveeer. Best way to install digital games is by putting the system on rest mode.

Otherwise, installing a game from the disk honestly surprises me how quickly it does it.

I'll test out TLOU and report back. I don't notice textures loading much. Except for Battlefield 4.

Did you get a different HDD or the one I posted above?

As a matter of fact, I've found this on the net. The HDD I'm using isn't too different from the stock HDD.

I should clarify, the "2TB Segate" is the on I'm using from the chart.

Definitely getting the PS4 version. I don't want to wait three days for this bad boy to install on the X1.

Is the bandwidth of the x1 network (whatever it is called) low?

On a 75/75 connection my Xbox One gets (around) 50/50 speeds with 80ms ping. This was before installing monthly updates. Closer to launch, it would give me very nice results like 80/70, with lower ping. Games download fast for me on my Xbox One. Sometimes, people don't know the download progress bar on the XBO also includes updates. It will download updates first then install game data.

shouldve invested on a 2tb and not a 1tb. ff14 is 40, dc universe 40, last of us 50, bf4 63, dragons age 50, ghosts 40, advanced warfare 40, knack 40, a bunch of 25gb games too plus ps plus games too. 1tb is just not enough. just got gta 5 too. at least i know i have some games i can justdelete because i have no plan to play it again or even cod multiplayer. there are certain games that ill keep on ps4 so ill probably end up having 500gb for switching games around. i dont even want to think how big metal gear would be knowing what happened with mgs4. sony is probably close to launching a slim with at least 1tb.

btw, im game sharing some games digitally, does anyone know if digital saves work with discs? i plan to buy the disc when theyre cheaper so i dont need to redownload them. downloading takes forever. the 2 days they give you to early download a game isnt long enough to download a 50gb game. i wont let my ps4 download it all straight for hours so usually id finish download past the release date anyway.

I don't see why not.

I went from a disc game to a digital only of the same game and the game save was intact, no problem.

Just delete games you don't play, no big deal.

I particularly agree with big RPGs. To me, they're the kind of game you buy, play the crap out of once, then be done with them, until maybe a decade or so later you decide to do it again for whatever reason.

As for fighters and 'pick up and play' games, I definitely prefer digital.
I love that I have Drive Club as a digital game.
