Guerrilla Games On PS4: “Everything’s Balanced Out”

The nuts and bolts of game development is a complex issue, but this sounds like a 100% positive, doesn't it?

According to what Guerrilla Games technical director Michiel Van Der Leeuw told Edge magazine (as cited by Videogamer ), Sony's new PlayStation 4 doesn't have any "performance bottlenecks."

Van Der Leeuw said that just because the system boasts a lot of PC architecture, it isn't any less of a console. He said a PC is comprised of numerous parts "that also [have] bridges in-between, where there are inefficiencies that may [come in if they're not] exactly the right match." However, he claims that Sony has found a way to bypass such inefficiencies:

"We've got the right amount of memory, video card; everything's balanced out. It was a very conscious effort to make sure that – with the speed of the memory, the amount of compute units, the speed of the hard drive – there would not be any bottlenecks.

I think it was for more than a year that we knew the main ingredients and there was just discussion after discussion trying to find a bottleneck. Take a look at this design; try to find the bottleneck."

There's no doubt that game makers are very much satisfied with the PS4. All that remains is to find out how gamers will respond to the machine, which is scheduled to launch worldwide this holiday season.

I know nothing of bridges and that, Beam you speak up. I just hope they bring back the good controls in KZ.

What he means is that every piece is made to work well together.

When he talks about bridge and stuff he means the connection between the CPU,GPU and memory. The way they are connected and work together. The information gets there as fast as the machine needs it to be.

Now for the bottleneck. Even if you have a good bridge, if the there is an imbalance in the *parts*, it will result in one of those *parts* to not be able to reach it's full potential.

Example: Some computers have the latest GPU (graphic card) but they have an old CPU (processor) and some OK memory. That CPU is going to cause that GPU to bottleneck because he can't keep up with it.

Now going back to what he said, all the stuff in the PS4 is great and well balanced so that no *part* is going to keep another *part* from reaching it's full potential! 😀

I am really looking forward to the PS4! With the current specs and the optimization of games, it will get me away from my PC for a while 😀 lol

Very good summary by Neo. And this balance is essential. It is essential to unleash the full potential of each component. But it is also essential for offering the best possible framework for creativity. There's room for games designed differently than the traditional games has been up until now.
And that is extremely exciting. I have high hopes for next gen.

That made me laugh! 😀 The Highlander stands out among users because of his technical knoledge. And now It seems he is even more recognized for his thoughts regarding the PS4 XD
I'm glad he made it on the list of new contributors, I'm looking forward to his articles. Has he posted any already?

It's absolutely a console because it's marketed and supported as one. The massive difference between PC and console comes down to the sort of leadership support and services the device receives. A PC environment is a homogeneous blend of applications that meets a variety of purposes without a clear cut direction provided by any one entity. Gaming consoles serve a primary role of providing games, and the marketing of that hardware exists because of that role.

Having hardware, no matter it's architecture, if it's positioned and implemented as a platform supported in it's static form for the primary purpose of gaming is a gaming console.

This is what I've been saying the entire time, and it's good to finally get a first party dev confirming it: It *is* the most well balanced console we've ever seen. It's a developers dream! There are no obvious bottlenecks, it all makes out for one well balanced computing unit, a machinery of perfectly scaled cogs that will keep delivering for years to come and stand the test of time.

This machine really is better than the sum of its parts, and that is what we all will get demonstrated the upcoming years.

so you take the super fast super expensive memory off GPUs, then mix it with a budget APU designed for web browsing bottom end budget laptops!
gaming memory, web browsing processing.
thats balanced?

Tell us what "web browsing bottom end budget laptops" can play any of the games displayed for the PS4 and I'll be at the store today to buy it.

Beamboom it's really not a question of opinion, specs are specs and don't lie, it's a fact that the specs released for the PS4 is for a low-end CPU & GPU, which I guess in a way means they are balanced, but with a very unproportionate amount of memory.

Ultima I've never said the PS4 has "mid-range" PC components, because it simply doesn't if you compare it to what components you would use for a mid-range gaming PC.

The CPU is a budget CPU meant for cheap laptops/tablets, definitely below what would be considered a mid-range CPU like for example the Intel Core i5-3350, 3.1 (3.3) GHz @ $180 or the i5-3570K, 3.4 (3.8) GHz @ $230, both perfectly reasonably priced hardware for a next-gen console with good price/performance.

The GPU as spec'd by Sony is also definitely below what would be considered a mid-range performance GPU such as the Radeon 7870 @ $200.

Whether the hardware architecture is well structured or has some deficiencies… my only concern is that this time round that devs understand it, know how to utilize it, and at the end can develop for it with 100% efficiency.

I am all for learn as you go which is what seemed to have happened with the PS3, with a few exceptions like Naughty Dog. Mind you even then I think they had knowledge about the PS3 more than most, but they admitted they had not tapped in to the potential of the PS3

This time round there are few excuses since everyone is saying nothing but high praises for this next entry.

So that all said, come on Guerilla Games…. give us your best shot, I have seen a small segment of it, now blow my socks off!!

I wonder how Japanese developers will handle this new PC arquitecture on consoles. If I'm not mistaken, I remember reading an article about a From Software developer stating, after the Dark Souls port fiasco, that Japanese Devs are not that good developing for PC.

If the PS4 is going to use as a programming target, the we had better see games developed for it first and let the others just tag along. That's when we will be able to really trust what they are saying now.
