For a brief moment there, I thought Square Enix had finally done something right.
Silly me.
I keep forgetting that these days, that company is like the slow learner in class who needs to have everything repeated, and who needs tutors and special assistance. And just when you think he's making progress, the poor kid fumbles it again.
I mean, this is just painful. The worst part is that Square Enix didn't intend for this announcement to be cruel; they actually thought people would respond well to this news. Final Fantasy VII for the PlayStation 4! Yes! The legendary role-playing game remade in brilliant 1080p HD for…no, wait. Just a port of the PC version. That's it. Basically, the same damn game we can get on the PlayStation Network right now. And after years and years of begging from the fans, this is what Square Enix comes up with.
It's like they listened but you know, not really. It's like they heard whispers of something related to FFVII but they didn't quite hear them. The Twitter reaction (and the audience's reaction at the event) pretty much sums it up: You bungled another one, Square Enix. We honestly have no idea how you can continue to be this out of touch but we've reached a point where we don't care .
The train wreck has to end someday. Maybe we just have to wait it out.
Related Game(s): Final Fantasy VII
beyond ridiculous. its like what in the hell goes on their minds, how do they think this is what people want? im done w them, and honestly i have no high hopes of any kind for ffxv, i feel like its gonna be a polished up ff13 with diff characters and whatever and then theyre gonna make 4 sequels to it that nobody wants or cares for. this company needs to die already so people can stop being blue balled. when was the last time they made an amazing game, and please spare me of ur cheap games that sucked.
The funniest part is that they flew a guy all the way from japan for this announcement.
Man, when I was watching it, for a second I thought to myself, "NO WAY, THEY'RE FINALLY GOING TO DO IT!!!!" figuring they would show a few clips of the old FFVII, then tear away to the NEW high polygon character models and all that jazz!
Nope.
I LITERALLY felt myself deflating as the seconds went on and on AND ON of the old game footage. I felt like a balloon with a pinhole leak. Watching all my hopes and dreams slowly escape my body until I was reduced to a flimsy rubbery shell of disappointment.
F U square enix. F. U.

Sony is at fault too for allowing this at a place where they said big things would happen and then nothing did, and where lots of older gamers would be praying for the return of older games.
I curse anyone who tells people not to harp about this. We got the right.
That said, I'm gettin it cuz the upscaled PC version is gonna look nice on muh TV compared to the crinkly PS1 version.
I'll probably buy it too. So we're also to blame. 😛
I'm sure you both know that only characters will be crisp (if you can even call few polygons like that) compared to the blurry enviroments which stays the same. It will be even more blurry on the big TV then on PC I suppose.
I'm curious how they're going to handle the pre-rendered backdrops.
Those are real low res by today's standards. So to have the game go from 1080p realtime battles to low res backgrounds during roaming is going to be quite jarring.
Seems more like a Sony thing than a Square Enix thing. It was Sony's attempt to show their system had "mind blowing" content. Even announcing Street Fighter 5 three years before it's out. It was their event. They should have been smart enough to know that wasn't the proper unveiling for it. But they thought people's minds would be blown. They werent.

Amazing how you manage to blame every last thing on Sony.
It's downright idiotic to think Sony somehow coerced Square Enix into announcing this. If S-E didn't want to, they wouldn't have.
I don't blame Sony for everything. I burned my tongue on some hot chocolate this morning and I don't think Sony had anything to do with that. Or did they?
You actually think that this huge event was not put under a fine tooth comb and the games put into place for the sole purpose of promoting the Playstation brand? My god, dude. It was the PLAYSTATION Experience, not the Square Enix Experience. If Sony said "Hey, come to our event to promote your game and get it major exposure" I'm sure SE would turn that down because the entire purpose of putting FF7 on the PS4 is so it DOESN'T sell. And the fact that Sony rehearsed and saw exactly what was to be said (probably added that glorious 1080p bullet point, as well) the onus for the disaster of a reveal is squarely (no pun intended) on Sony. The fact that you can't see that is befuddling but not altogether unexpected.
Whatever you're smoking; stop. It's making you… Dense.
Whats idiotic is that you people think this games will get remade lol i find it amusing. It will never happen…
You definitely have to question the intelligence of a person that gets angry that a company chooses not to waste resources on a remake of a game theyve played and purchased multple times and instead focus on new experiences. Dopey, to say the least.
As usual, you spout crap without having a single solitary clue what you're talking about.
First of all, I have 15 years experience handling shows and events of all kinds. You have zero (or you'd have to, based on the exhibited level of ignorance). For ANY show, regardless of the purpose or who's hosting it, those participating have to go through a series of hurdles before being accepted. It's a massive process.
In other words, Square Enix had to REALLY want to be part of this. Sony could've begged and pleaded all they wanted; if the contributor had no interest in going, they wouldn't have gone. It's the publishers that get the most out of this, even when it's an event tailored toward a specific manufacturer. Everybody but you seems to get this.
And as for a FFVII remake, it's a project millions of fans have been requesting for many years. If a company wants to make money, it listens to the consumers and produces what they want. New products? Square Enix's main product line, Final Fantasy, has been on a steep decline since FFXIII-2. Lightning Returns was a critical disaster and sales flop. Any company that sees its flagship product floundering so badly would try to fix it. Not only does Square Enix NOT try to fix it, they don't listen to the one thing fans said they've wanted for over a decade.
Waste resources? On what? A product people might actually buy? Products that have been proven to produce plenty of revenue, especially in 2014? Yeah, "dopey" us. Just…stop talking. Maybe spending all those years as an Xboy has completely sapped any actual knowledge of the industry. Or you never had any to begin with.
About 90% of all your posts involve something derogatory aimed at Sony. Nobody here believes you're anything but a lingering troll. The FFVII port announcement has absolutely nothing to do with Sony, nor does this article have anything to do with Sony. It's something Square Enix is doing. Spinning your post to insult Sony AGAIN only proves my point. We don't see any evidence that you've ever even played a PlayStation game, do you know that?

Ben,
Even if you had a trillion years experience it doesn't change the facts. Ive already conceded that Sony goes through the show with a fine toothed comb. Why didn't anyone at Sony tell Square "No, its not the right fit for our show or the message for our product" Its mutually beneficial for both companies to show the game. In a psuedo 20th anniversary, you have to admit that there is a chance that the suits at Sony thought that having the game that is arguably most synonymous with the brand center stage was a fantastic idea. Maybe you don't have the capacity to step away and look logically, but oh well.
As far as the remake, yes it would be successful. But fans are pretty dopey for the most part. The same thing over and over. Where does it end? Why not remake 6, 8, and 9? Then Saga Frontier? When does Square focus on the future of RPGs instead of being dictated to by a bunch of people who lack the capacity to see past the previous iteration they enjoyed. And for the record, Lightning Returns is actually pretty good, despite the hate train jumpers.
Finally, my posts. I post what I believe and have always backed them up with how I see it. Have I poked a bit too hard at the fans? Yes I'll admit that. And in the proverbial lion's den, it's not the way to be accepted. But I come here for the entertainment, not to make friends. Honestly, I have too many of them to keep track of as it is. The beauty of this site it that the name is before the post. Anyone who doesn't agree with me can scroll past. I have no issue in doing that with the posters on this site who I don't normally agree with. How hard is that for anyone else? As far as proof anyone can get me on PSN, though I haven't been on in months since I gave away the PS4 and I only do PS3 wired because of installs and its not in the family room anymore. PSN ID kamenryuki. Of course, this is if someone really need to know that I own and have completed just as many Sony exclusives, if not more, than anyone on this site.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to call you out on here as well…
I think you and "______" are just Xbox fanboys out to spread M$ gospel, whilst dismissing anything half decent from Sony. Except, you write much better than "______", so you come off sounding more reputable.
But I, and probably a few others, can read between the lines of your dialogue. 😉
As for the PSN name… Hell, I can just as well post any random level 16 PSN account on here as well, and call it mine. Doesn't mean it's true.
Big 6,
Come on. I've never told anyone here to buy any Microsoft products. I like to play Devil's Advocate so if it's an MS bash fest, I'll spin it from the other angle and defend them. But honestly that's out of boredom and not following the rest of the posters. Reading 30 posts of "MS sucks" gets old. But it doesn't even have to be overy positive simply saying the Xbox has great games is enough to be labeled some sort of plant. The problem is people remember those posts besides the ones where I say SotC, Heavy Rain and MGS3 are my absolutr 3 favorite games of all time. All Sony exclusives. But if I am a fanboy, admittedly, I am certainly a Nintendo fanboy.
As far as the PSN ID it's mine for sure. A play on the name of a Japanese show I watched Kamen Rider Ryuki. Its also my old Xbox gamertag if that was a proof of how much more ive played my PS3 than my 360. I dont need to be a cheerleader for Sony, ive supported them with an incredible amount of money in their 20 years. If I wanted to fake it I could have picked friends on my list that have way more impressive stats and completion rates than I do. Then I could even claim I still have a PS4, which I dont.
I guess it isn't so bad to play Devil's Advocate when the situation is right. But, doing so in a PS-centric website can be a little dangerous, given the sensitivity ppl have about their console of choice.
I mean, if you're going to blindly prefer Forza over GT/Driveclub, Sunset Overdrive over Infamous, Killer Instinct over Tekken, and suddenly hating on anything Street Fighter, etc… then there are a bunch of other website to visit and be a part of that discussion. (I'm not saying you are.. I'm just giving a general example)
However, I do really like the way you write. It comes off sounding mature and though out, as opposed to the child-like temper tantrum that comes out of "_______" whenever he has something to say.
I mean, does anyone believe him anymore after the 15th time he's said, "Man, my PS+ subscription is up for renewal and I seriously doubt I'm gonna pay for another year!". Like, really? hahaha
You just keep talking about things you know nothing about. Final Fantasy fans don't just want the "same thing." They want a true FFVII remake but that's for that particular project; it's hardly what they want for the future of the series. You don't have your pulse on the finger of the Final Fantasy community; can't you just admit that?
Sony and Final Fantasy have often been synonymous. That's the only reason why the FFVII port was shown at the PlayStation Experience. But the bottom line is that it's Square Enix's call whether they choose to present it or not, and it was a mistake. This article isn't about SONY. It's about SQUARE ENIX. Yet, you made it about Sony.
That's because you make everything about Sony. You can claim your PSN ID all you want. All anyone has to go on around here is your posts and based on that information, every single member of this community would say you're just an Xbox fanboy and a troll. You never mention that you're having fun with a game that was reviewed, or a game others talk about. You ignore such conversations and try to turn every comment string into a console/manufacturer war.
That's YOUR problem. Not ours.

I saw Kids initial response before Ben replied and genuinely thought it was a tonge-in-cheek joke. I'm shocked that he was actually serious…
How sad. :'(
I would say that if this thing sold real well S-E may be inspired to commission the remake. but because they're retarded they'll probably think "oh, they really like this port now let's port over FF8 and 9 the exact same way."
then if they do think it deserves to be remade they'd just remake it so it could run on every mobile device, PC, and console alike.
I don't think it will sell well since everyone has several versions already.
Yeah. I've still got my black spine original, PSN version on PSP, and the PC port that I use for modding. I have no reason to ever want to buy it AGAIN.
Hey, so FFX HD Collection is coming to PS4.
Has no one started a kickstarter for FFVII? I imagine with the billions raised they would sell the rights to someone.
Not sure they can sell the rights SE owns.
A kickstarter is probably the best idea at this point. It could work.
I didn't know what all the FF7 controversy was about until reading this article, cause well, I've never played a FF game. Now that I know however, I really feel bad for you guys. This must be rough for you all. Sorry. 🙁
Final Fantasy is dead for me anyway, not care anymore…
Upscale PC graphics. Yeah? Graphics from 1998? MIDI files, too? Promise?!
MIDI files are great. I just downloaded Gunvolt for the 3DS. It's essienally Mega Man 11. 80's graphics, music and all.
Alot of people contacting Square Enix to remake the three classics VII, VIII, IX, but NOO they just don't listen, when they said thta they will re release the VII i thought the're would be a total remake but noo it has to be an remastered version of the old one, what now they can remaster ps1 classics, NOW it''s possible, the developers they think we are stupid if Square Enix was right in they're head they would start immediately 3-5 years ago making Total remakes of the 3 classics 7,8,9 and included in each one game a remastered version of the old ones that's how it's done and i'm not even CEO of SE BAM!!!
I'm sorry, but as long as I have been in the background I had to say that the rererelease of VII is a poor move. But, even though it was the biggest "Are you serious," moment…
I get the feeling that SE is up to something… The whole thing is fishy. I mean when it is abundantly obvious that it is a bad move, surely it must be a decoy to distract us from the real issue. They are putting VII in our minds for what reason I wonder…
Of course with several copies already, I won't be buying this anytime soon. I mean my DC is already split between PS3 and PSP, I still have my HC, and when I get a Vita it should work on that.
I know something is up… There just has to be something. Nobody is THAT dumb, right?

I was really hoping that they make a surprise announcement the day after, saying something along the lines of "Oh wait, did we just show you a trailer from 50 billion years ago? Silly us, what we meant to show you is.." then cue the God rays, and laser lights and the crowd goes berserk at the sight of FF VII on the big screen with advent-children inspired character models…
Silly me for hoping.
I cried like 5 times during this announcement…I hate Square Enix
Wow, I was wrong! There WAS a mind blowing announcement actually. I appologize. This is what everybody was waiting for. You got my money for the 4th time for the same game (PSX, PC, PSP, PS4).
/sarcazm off
Go F yourself S-E!
Got to fell sorry for that guy. He expected people to rush the stage, and hoist him on their shoulders while chanting his name. Instead he got: The Grinch just stole christmas!
I thought this was a joke when I saw the link on YouTube. Like I was gonna get Rick Rolled or something. But…no…it's very real.
At this point I don't want them to remake it. Better they sell or license it to Sony or another studio to be remade. The people running Square are morons.

is that really such a bad thing though?
what would you rather, this properly remade in HD to look like all other "HD" remasters, i.e. ps2 games uprezzed, i.e. crap?
or FFXV and KH3, new games built for next gen consoles?
seriously, this HD remake crap has to stop!
enough with remake this, remake that, these are new consoles and they need games designed for THEM!
not games designed for 20 year old hardware put through a photocopier at 110%.
This on top of the f**ked up Rise of the Tomb Raider decision. Yet, PS fans continue to support this despicable joke of a company. No doubt tons of people will buy this crap. If people would stop throwing money at SE for all the stupidity, maybe things would change.
exactly. dumbasses who think this is gonna "look good" just bc its on the ps4 only encourages se to think theyre doing something right. stupid consumerists.
How is the tomb raider thing fucked up? MS prolly offered them ALOT of money to make the game xbox exclusive,I see no problem with it just like I have no problem with the Street fighter move for sony..
Awesome idea: since SE won't give us a new FF7 (or 12 which I also love, or Type 0, or Star Ocean) Konami could swoop in with a new Suikoden and capitalize on this unmet demand.
A next gen suikoden with upgraded graphics would be awesome
Boy did they fool us FF7 fans… I lost my breath for a second when I saw the FFVII logo and all my dreams were shattered as the trailer started… Damn you Square Enix
So pretty much all you're getting is the same dated, smeared low-res visuals you remember from the PS1 release only it's going to be abit more smoother because it's the PC port?
Isn't this already available on the PSN anyway? Or do they think by releasing the PC port of the game people are going to buy it because of the visual upgrade from the PS1 version? Lmfao!
I thought that after acquiring some western developers SE would have all the time they needed to focus on RPG's, but that never happened. Now we're seeing just exactly how lazy they've become. They don't want to spend the time to make decent games anymore, so I would be foolish to believe they'd ever make time for a proper remaster.
I find it amusing but certainly not surprising.
How many of you will actually buy this AND play it to the end? Let's be honest here.
Shows up late for Christmas dinner. Opens door and sees entire family yelling at each other. Steps back & slowly closes door.
my whole thing with this is why the heck did you no HD it up like really come on SE this is just dum
happy gaming
