If you're not a big shooter fan, you're probably not really into Call of Duty . In fact, you might freakin' despise it.
But come on. At the very least, you have to give credit where credit is due. I know you run around and shoot things. I know it isn't perfect. But geez, what more do you want ?
You know, coming from the perspective of someone who has been continually disappointed in his favorite franchise ( Final Fantasy ), I have to say this: I actually wish FF had followed a similar course of action. I don't mean I want annual releases and I don't want the staleness CoD suffered from in recent years. What I mean is that at the very least, at the absolute bare minimum, Call of Duty has always maintained its core. It's a brainless, balls-out action extravaganza and fans keep coming back for that, despite the other issues. Final Fantasy abandoned its core. It doesn't want to be a role-playing game anymore.
Call of Duty has never not wanted to be what it is: A first-person shooter. Sure, several entries could've been better. Yes, the franchise began a few trends (such as the aforementioned annualization) in the industry that we could've done without. I've been one of many to call out Activision and the developers associated with the franchise. "Do better," we've all said in the past. Well, Sledgehammer Games has done better. Is it the epic bomb of amazement that was Modern Warfare last generation? Not quite. But is it better than Ghosts and does it try new things that offer different perspectives and shifting mechanical paradigms? Absolutely.
As such, just stop complaining for a few moments and admit that this year's CoD isn't crap. If you're man enough to do so, that is.
Related Game(s): Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
Sorry but i disagree. You seem to be basing your verdict off your disappointment in something else (What happened to you? It's like you're heading someplace dark).
The game sucks (yeah i got it, it came with a free year of Ps+, how could i resist) and i'm only 2 hours in.

Suck so much that it got an average score of 83 % …..
Even if you don t like it , it s a definite improvement from all cod that came between this one and 4 .
Just because everyone is doing crack doesn't mean crack is good. That's the problem with this world, people seek safety in numbers; literally and figuratively.
Last edited by karneli lll on 11/4/2014 11:15:53 PM
It's not safety in numbers Karneli, or that it's only good because a lot of people like it. You don't seem to understand that when there's a general consensus on how something is, it might very well be that which they say it is.
It does what it does well for the genre, so if your into that stuff, you'll probably like it.
Stop kidding yourself. If it's not your thing that's cool, just say that instead. It's more honest and certainly more accurate.
Disagree all you want.
The only person "heading someplace dark" seems to be you. I'm having fun with something while you hate it.

The numbers and reviewers speak a lot clearly than your useless opinion
So eager to bring out the pitchforks.
Ben, you have always been a hater but now its sparkly anime eyes all over COD, i guess its good PR for the advertisers.
I am a COD hater and i do not admit that its pretty darn good, because it isn't. Its better than Ghosts but then again most games are.
" Nope berserk you got it wrong, many love the blops games. "
By improvement i mean the one that feel fresh the most .Loved the first black ops a lot ( ffa array ftw and dedicated servers …. god i miss those on PC ).
Oh ben stfu! You are one of those haters. If i recall you had not so lovely things to say about CoD and now you are playing ball on the the other team. Im sorry sir but you are one big hypocrite. I mean i always knew this but maybe others will see..
Big… hey he just explained that above already. gotta read man before you start "stfu" people cuz otherwise you're setting yourself up for a smackdown..

Take the time to actually read .He never said he was a fan of cod but still say it s finally an improvement this time . Don t feel much like a rehash like all those between this one and 4 .
The real question is why you re even here ? you don t seem to like ben who is doing most of the work here .
The last sentence of this editorial throws out any defense of Ben. No one should be insulted, be it their manhood or intelligence simply because they don't like CoD. I mean, you don't have to smell a piece of crap to know it stinks and if some gamers think CoD is crap, more power to them. And this is coming from someone that enjoys the franchise, this new entry in particular. But this editorial is why this site is going down the drain in a major way. The poignant, intelligent days are gone. This is click bait garbage that Ben always gets on his high horse to rail against but cannot stop doing it himself.
Big_Boss: I've defended CoD more times than I can count. I've actually written more articles in defense of the series in the past six years than articles opposing it. But why bother with facts?
Kid: You've done nothing but insult me and the site since you've shown up. You're welcome to leave at any time. I mean, you're too stupid to even understand tongue-in-cheek context when you see it, as if I'm somehow insulting people with the last sentence. If all you want to see is hostility, fine. Whatever. You fit right in.

I've never insulted you. I've praised you and yes, I've disagreed and been critical. But I know that is tantamount to an insult, oh, omniscient one.
That last sentence Ben wrote is truth, you must be some kind of tard or a chick on her period to take it as an insult.
Yeah. You're not insulting; you're "critical." Of course, I wouldn't be allowed to say the same thing. Nice how that works for you.
I could dig up about three dozen posts where you've blatantly insulted me and about twenty other people here but really, why bother? As I said above, nobody here cares about facts. Just what goes on in their petty, childish, egocentric little minds.

Well, souljah, I've already said I own and really like the new CoD and the series as a whole since I own every single iteration. I'm not offended at all by what he said, not because i already said it didnt pertain to me, as it's impossible for me to be offended by a faceless internet poster on the internet, even one as known as Ben. As far as you, we get that Advanced Warfare is a great game but your constant damage controlling as if the entire world needs to agree is a sad sight indeed. Like i said above, which you clearly didnt read, no one should be forced or berated into liking or even admitting the improvement of a series, if they dont like it..
Ben, there is a world of difference between you calling someone stupid or telling them to shut up and I voicing my opinion as a loyal daily reader of this site, as it pertains to the content of the site. In your lexicon, maybe they are the same, but in reality, no..

Its not that i dont like ben, i respect him BUT he thinks he is some type of legend when it come to video game journalism and he is not. He never admits when he is wrong, and folks he is wrong more then you think. Anyways iam over it.
If that's what you got off of my comment, you really are a tard.
"I've never insulted you."
I made a small outloud outburst at my desk here, shouting, "Ha!"
I think the best thing about this is that Activision now has confidence in a 3 year development cycle. This stands in contrast to the 2 year cycle they used the previous gen. So love CoD or hate it, we can expect the level of effort to continue to be higher than it ever was during the last gen. This helps keep the bar set real high for competitors. Not many companies can fork out that much money before getting a return on their investment. Because keeping 3 CoD's in tandem at all times requires BIG money.

Yes this should give them enough time to update engines, and so forth. It's completely beneficial and I think we will see hat of Trey arch and IW don't get stuck in their ways. Having Sledgehammer on board brings in freshness. We won't really see this new direction the franchise is going until the next one. At this point IW and Trey arch can only bring it down based on its trend from last gen.
yeah they will have more confidence and if it sells well to wat ever expectations they have i don't know then i think they'll come out and say COD is as strong like EA did with battlefield after 4 and i'm not say this is a BF4 heck no my any means of a sensible person i'm just saying they shouldn't get to up them selves about a recovery just yet wait another year or 2 and then we'll see if COD can maintain a decent lvl of goodness to justify that sort of a statement
happy gaming
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate….
oh the referenc there lol i couldn't help but laugh
I love it! It's just so much fun. High production values with very solid gunplay. The Exo is a game changer. Melee is very satisfying as they go flying when you punch them. Very happy with my current load out. Level 23 and looking forward to playing tomorrow.
I didn't want to like this game, I really didn't. But darn it all if it isn't fun! Sledgehammer certainly did a good job and good for them for finally making CoD a good shooter.
CoD had been rehashed garbage for so many years now. Good to see that's finally changed for the better.
'sigh'
I'm really tired of doing this.
Start banning people
smoke a spliff and enjoy it, you get paid for this and your opinions alike, they don't
I haven't played it, so I can't say either way. Thing is, even if they did try something different and even if it is the best Cod game ever, I still won't play it.
I have no interest in this type of game. I just don't. So I guess yay for the FPS fans, but I have much less time to play these days and so I'm not wasting time on genre's that I don't love.
How can I admit something is good if I'm never going to play it?
But going by review scores it looks like it's good. I just would rather spend my money on other things tbh.
Haven't been interested in the series since MW 2 disappointed me but this one looked good so I bought it and I have no problem admitting I'm having a ton of a fun playing it. Prepared for tons of thumbs down but haters gonna hate.
if u've played and enjoyed it then and the njoyment to you i just have no interest it personally
I never understood all the hate for COD, if you don't like it, then don't play, simple I know but it is that simple. I don't play COD as often as used too, but still buy it every year it's kind of a collectable thing for me.
Also still to busy leveling Destiny before the next DLC. But I will find time for this game later.
I wouldn't know because I'm not gonna play it. For me it's still a dumb shooter and it won't change. But it's not because the game is bad – it's because I got older and my game taste has changed and I require now something more from a game then shoot everything that moves. Even Battlefield 4 (series of which I always was big fan), has bored me to death.
Kudos for devs to pull it off AGAIN and for the people who like it… enjoy!
Haven't played it yet but it can't be any worse than CoD:Ghost bc aside from the extinction missions that game was complete garbage so I'm sure it didn't take much to make this CoD better than the last one
I want this game while we wait for the new Unreal Tournament. COD multiplayer sessions are jolly good fun, and it's been quite a few years since last time I played COD.
Ooh, Unreal Tournament!! =D Looking forward to another iteration myself Beamboom.
Just one question, will this mean a huge exodus of players from Destiny? Considering that they're both FPS. As much as I like CoD:AW, I'm still enjoying a bit of Destiny (VoG really is the bomb…). Hopefully, I won't run into cases where I can't find anyone to play with anymore.
I wouldn't think. Lots of people have lots of time to play more than one game. Destiny and CoD is such a different experience imo.
One huge reason I don't bother with CoD is annualization. No matter how good it is, in one year I'll feel like it's outdated. I either try to keep up n buy them every year, or feel outdated. Amongst other reasons I just prefer IPs that are not annualized. In perspective I'm a big GT fan, but if it was annualized Id be drawn away from it. Imagine for uncharted or God of war. Assassin Creed tho has been diverse enough to pull off annualization without getting on my nerves.
So yeah, congrats on AW sledgehammer. It probably is a great game. Im just not going to touch it. Doesn't help that I'm not really into fps lol, but I loved bfbc2.
@Ben Dutka: I remembered that you are vouching for Destiny to outsell COD: Advance Warfare this holiday season. Based on the reviews on COD: AW, I think you are about to eat your own words… hehe lol! ^_^
Destiny might still outsell it. My opinion on that hasn't changed. Review scores don't seem to have much of an impact on Call of Duty games, one way or the other.
Didn't destiny sell a crap ton of online digital downloads, though? Will we ever know what it actually sold?
I don't have to since I'll never play it 🙂
Haven't been able to compel myself to buy it yet. I think it is the first campaign I'm interested in for a long time but I'm just not ready to commit to the mp.
So I caved and bought it. Haven't had this much fun with Call of Duty since Black Ops 1. The exo is a big game changer indeed.
I have not played COD for many year.. I do not have the speed of the current "Twitch" players so I am never any good on the multiplayer FPS games. Looking at the game, it looks solid! I might pick it u, but Shadow of Morodr has me stuck deep.
That XO deal for $349.99 that comes with CoD AW is just killer. That effectively makes the XO $290.00. They're doing the same thing with AC Unity (with Black Flag as a bonus). I really wonder if MS will squeak out even a one month win with such a promo.
