As announced over at the PlayStation Blog , Sony's Silver Wired Stereo Headset (available for both PS4 and PS3) is now on sale.
It features 7.1 virtual surround sound, a retractable boom mic for voice chat, breathable ear cushions, and in-line volume and mic controls. Furthermore, the new headset can take advantage of custom audio modes for certain games, and this includes the upcoming audio mode in Far Cry 4 . More custom audio is in the works for high-profile titles like inFamous: Second Son , The Last Of Us , Destiny , and Watch Dogs .
Interestingly, the Silver headset is also compatible with PlayStation Vita and other mobile devices thanks to a handy 3.5mm jack. Not sure I need that level of sound quality with such devices but hey, it's nice to have the option.
yeah sure it is a nice option an to get a 7.1 heast with a 3.5m jack is really good cos i was having a hard time getting a good ps4 head set with 3.5m jack cos then it plugs straight into to controller rather than using one of the USB jacks so maybe i might get later but not likely atm

The problem with the ear cushions is that they don't overlap your ear, so you can still hear noises from outside. It's really important when you have 7.1 sound and want to hear where enemies are in games like BF or TLoU. Sony Gold wireless headset 7.1 had these, as well as Sony Wieless Pulse 7.1 of which I am a happy user.
I too am fortunate enough to have received as a gift, a pair of the Sony Pulse Elite wireless headset, which also included a 3.5 mm cord to plug them in for use with most devices. It's also nice that they can be used as wired headphones if close enough while playing or being used just while charging. I also really like the Bass Impact which is adjustable, and the hidden mic would probably be less distracting to me than a protruding one would be. The other features mentioned are also all there. All in all, they are quite good. The only slight drawbacks could be the battery life, and they can become a tad uncomfortable on the top of the head and thus require occasional reorientation. I guess extra padding could be implemented by the user somehow though. One last little nitpick could include the slight perspiration behind and around the ears at times too. Overall, a 4.5/5 from me though. =)

I just need one for the mic to do streaming commentary. And I like Sony. Relying on intricately charge & playing on battery power (wireless) is a bad time.
That's why is awsome to have wirless headset with the option to connect 3.5" jack when the battery runs out (like Sony Pulse 7.1 Elite Edition). Which never happened to me btw, as my gaming sessions never last more then 5 hours (usually 1-2) and I always charge headphones during the night. I just love all kinds of wireless – not bothering with any cables is a bless for me.
Plus, in my experience they can absolutely be used while charging, providing the user has cables or extensions that are long enough. The headset charges via USB, so I'm assuming as long as whatever specs necessary are met then they may possibly be charged using other USB jacks, no?

I just hope it is better made than the Pulse Elite. That thing was horrible! Kept breaking under its own weight.
My question is, quite simply, how does this headset sound? If it's like the original headset, I will not be getting this. There was virtually no bass with the original wireless headset, and the general sound quality was a joke.
Does anyone know if the new Silver headset offers good sound quality? Is it on a similar level to the Pulse Elite?

Sorry they've broken on you like that. =( In my experience so far though, my pair have been quite sturdy; it will be a year in December since I've had my pair of Sony Pulse Elites. =)
@H8WL3R, how the heck have yours lasted a full year? I've already gone through two pairs, both of which were fairly well maintained, and sat on stands when not in use.
I used them an average of 6 hours every day. After a few months of daily use, the first pair broke under its own weight. Literally, the plastic was too thin to handle the stress, and it sort of just snapped.
Same thing happened with the second pair, which I still have. The second pair has yet to snap clear through, and is only a crack right now. However, I haven't used it in nearly a month, as I'm trying to prolong its life until I can get a well built replacement.
It's simply a defect with the design itself. Sony used thin plastic that couldn't handle the stress of constantly being used on a daily basis. I've contacted them about this, and they said it is a fairly common problem that they're looking to address. So far, they've yet to fix this defect.
Anyway, as per my original question. Does anyone know how the Silver sounds in comparison to other Sony headsets? Is it on the same level as the Pulse? Is it similar to the original wireless headset? Is it similar to the Gold headset?
Honestly, I hated the original headset, as it had virtually no bass, and horrible sound quality in general. However, the Pulse Elite was a different story, and I greatly enjoyed the sound quality.
I've yet to try the Gold, but I've read that the sound is more or less identical to the original, meaning it's basically crap. Can anyone here confirm?
I'm looking for rich sound that I can use for music, movies and games. I'm a bit of an audiophile, lol.
Though honestly, considering that the Silver is a wired headset, and that it is sold for $80, I'd expect to get something equal to the XB500 headphones. Those are about $50 nowadays, and are fairly old. They also have excellent sound, all things considered.
So, if the Silver is incapable of delivering sound that is on an equal or greater level than the Sony XB500 headphones, I just don't see any value in getting a pair. I mean, they're both wired. I don't want to overpay for something that my nearly five year old Sony headphones can beat quality wise.

I heard bass-impact is what makes these elites break, namely the shaking it does to plastic so I dont use it. I wouldn't use it anyway because it makes my head dizzy. Bass is great even without this turned on.
I like the fact that the cushions are breathable but wtf Sony these are on not over the ear, what is the point of having surround sound in headphones with sound leakage on top of that.
I need to locate a good headset that is both 3.5" and wireless. I have a 7.1 stereo and the wife loves when I can jut plug into the controller and the stereo goes mute! Such an awesome feature!
