Are Platinum Trophies Too Hard To Get?

I'm all about balance.

There was a time in video game history when, quite frankly, games were simply way too hard. This was a result of the arcade boom (the more times you die, the more quarters you have to put in) and it bled into the living room. Plus, it was basically a niche, hardcore hobby in those days; if you played, you played .

These days, it's a mainstream form of entertainment and some would argue that games have gotten too easy. See, I like to stay somewhere in between. Same goes for rewards earned when playing those games and as such, I just have to ask: Are Platinum Trophies simply too difficult to obtain for the overwhelming majority of gamers? Let's not forget that most gamers have lives and sometimes, it's not so much the difficulty of earning certain Trophies, but the sheer amount of time one must invest.

I've made the case before for two Platinum Trophies; one each for single-player and multiplayer portions. If you get both, you earn a Diamond Trophy, or something like that. I still think that's a good idea for those of us who couldn't possibly care less about multiplayer in certain games. And while I'm aware that it's entirely up to the developer to choose the Trophies, I think some designers should acknowledge the huge mainstream appeal of games today. Maybe Platinums don't have to appear downright impossible for most gamers (again, gamers who also have lives).

That's really all I'm asking.

Trophies like the ones found in Resistance 2 (kill 10,000 in MP) or Crysis 2 (play MP 6 months after your first time) are game breakers.

I won't be getting those trophies never.

How is starting a mp session 6 months later such a hurdle?

That Resistance 2 trophy was rather easy considering the respawning time was fast. It's unfortunate that after Resistance 1, the multiplayer went downhill

Resistance 1 – 30K kills
Resistance 2 – 22K kills
Resistance 3 – 15 kills

I agree with pavlovic. Time gated trophies are silly. What makes more sense, if you want something that means someone played your game for a long time, is like a collection based trophy… like "reached max level" or "collected all weapons", etc. etc.

Trophies for beating a game on the hardest setting, or accomplishing something difficult, like get 2 headshots with one bullet in multiplayer… that makes sense to me.

Really platinum are not hard to get. But developers tend to make you play the game – and literally play it longer than one probably would to get them. Most now days require you to play mp – which some people aren't fans of – for insane amounts of time to get one trophy.

There should be two platinum trophies for games including both sp and mp if trophies really are that important.

I kind of stopped trying for them, and only do in games I really enjoy and want to be thorough with.

I'm the same way Bigrailer – I stopped trying for them and only go for it if it's a game I really enjoy.

…or if I only have a few left after beating the game.

But I tell you what, my gaming enjoyment significantly increased when I stopped trophy hunting.

Yeah same here. Trophies really take focus off the main game play.

While I have several platinums, I like your idea for separating single and multiplayer trophies. Any game that has multiplayer trophies is keeping me from having a chance at more platinums.
There's only a handful left for me in Shadow of Mordor, but I'm not sure I won't end up with one of them being too tricky to get.

Platinum trophies NEED to be hard to get. Otherwise, it wouldn't feel accomplishing to get one and it wouldn't be impressive to see someone with some.

It should garner the response, "oh crap, he has 14 platinums! That guy plays some games, nice work!"

Look at the link below when and if my comment gets approved. Trophies absolutely do not need to be hard. They need to be an addition to the game, something that adds to the experience and not makes you do time consuming things.

I'm just saying, I'd prefer, "finish the game on coop", rather than "kill 10,000 enemies online".

I'll agree with you on that one Killa, they don't need to be excessive like that Jack of All Trades trophy. I mean, seriously, there are limits.

They should be challenging, difficult, for those that really want to go there. Not 'easy' or even 'normal' difficulty.

More like 'survival' level of difficulty in getting those platinums. Otherwise, why bother? Getting one should feel rewarding and make you feel accomplished, like you did something special.

I liked in Double Dragon Neon when the end song was playing, Skeletor was singing something about how you should win a trophy for beating the game and then sure enough you got one right then.

I've got 42, I think, platinums. They aren't hard to get. Like the members who mentioned above, developers tend to make tedious trophies to aquire. In AC Brotherhood, a trophy requires you to reach maximum level, 50. Sorry man, ain't nobody got time for that. Then there's Killzone Shadow Fall which for a single gold trophy, you have to absolutely complete every single challenge in the game. Some challenges include killing 250 players with C4, another 250 with frag granades, etc. Some even require 500 kills and possibly more. Who in their right mind would make a trophy like this?

It is part of the reason why I've toned down a lot of my trophy hunting. I only get platinums that are feasible in a somewhat challenging way. I'm about to get my Minecraft platinum for the PS4. My previous platinum was GTA V, if I remember correctly.

Most platinum s are some what hard to get but when you do get em they feel like a nice little reward (more so than achievements) for all your time invested, for me mirror's edge was very rewarding to get.

ProfPlayStation
ProfPlayStation

Mirror's Edge is a great example of a Platinum that takes skill, and not a meaningless grind.

Then there's things like Red Faction: Guerrilla, which is a game I do quite enjoy. Yet this single-player focused game has an uninteresting multiplayer mode because… well, because. So it has online requirements which take hundreds of hours to complete, to which I immediately said, "Screw that." I completed the single-player trophies and called it a day (at somewhere around 50% trophies).

Developers need to decide what their game's strengths are and gear the trophies toward that. If your game isn't all about the multiplayer, there shouldn't be a slew of multiplayer trophies, or any that require huge online time investments. And random nonsense like "Shoot 100 enemies in the shoulder while airborne and upside down" need to go.

Trophies should be a reward for a meaningful challenge. Not an aggravating grind.

I also think ME is one of the best examples of how trophies should be implemented. It was entirely dependant on your skill whether that platinum took you 14 or 100 hours to complete, and by the time you got it you really felt like you mastered everything the game had to offer.

Temjin001

Some, probably most are. I wish they were a bit more realistic but I sorta like how insanely hardcore they are for bragging rights. so like when someone looks me up randomly on PSN.. they're like "whoa, this guy is hardcore and is a real quality gamer" =p
I have 4 myself. Infamous 2 is one of them. That one was nice to get, maybe too easy. I bet Second Son's is about as easy… maybe someday I'll grab that.
I have other ones like Tekken 6 and DOA5 U. Oh, and Jak and Daxter. another easier one but felt about right.

I believe, yes, they are too hard, and or too time consuming for a great majority of people to obtain. I don't however see that to be a problem. It provides the challenge for people who want it, and aren't at all necessary to enjoy the full game. I do think some that are excessive grind fest, and some that make you play a game in a way you never would are annoying. However the challenge is often times part of the fun, and make getting some platinums feel very rewarding. So I guess they aren't for everyone, but provide both a time consuming endeavor, and a test of skill for those who want it and are looking for something more from their favorite games. I personally don't want them to be easier, as that would take away some of their prestige.

And as for separate trophies for SP and MP. Totally against it. A platinum should indicate mastery of the entire game. I might have been okay with a system like the one you mentioned if it was initially introduced like that. But don't feel it would be right to retroactively force it into place. If there were all of a sudden a higher trophy than platinum, I believe it would throw off the balance that's already there. especially if there were then multiple platinums per game.

i mean, if youre a trophy chaser, then yeah it all makes sense no matter how hard some might be and i guess thats the point of them.

for "challenging" trophies i always think why would they make u do that?? can anyone from the development team get it?

the only platinum i have is from playing walking dead season 1. if you played, then yeah lol it didnt require brain power. just beat the game.

Platinum trophies should be hard to obtain even tho most are pretty easy. I don't agree with giving two different platinum trophies but maybe a system to were you can delete the MP trophies and at least have 100% for that game. Idk probably will be too much work to even try something like that server side but at least the people that don't have time for MP get some satisfaction when completing the game.

I don't care for platinum trophies so I don't even bother getting them. I just have 1 game platinum'd, which is FF XIII-2, just because I love the game and played so much of it that I was just 1 trophy away from platinum, so I figured I may as well go for it.

Personally I don't target platinium when I see it is a mindeless grinding in SP and MP as well, like kill 10.000 enemies. I like challenging trophies i.e beat TloU on Grounded (which I just did btw:)) that require skill. I almost always leave MP unplayed. The reason is simple – I don't have time for it. This is also the reason why I choose games I play very carefuly and I buy the ones I know I will love. Then I am trying to squize everything from this game but leave MP.
Given the above, I like the idea os separating SP and MP platinium. If you get two, you should get a Diamond Trophy as Ben sugested:)

Yes multiplayer needs to be OPTIONAL.

Platinums are great but multiplayer requirements need to be killed. Servers aren't forever, neither are players.

not too difficult, too time consuming.
finish the game 10000 times to build up enough points to purchase every weapon upgrade in the game.
thats not difficult, just ridiculously time consuming.
far too many trophies are set on silly numbers instead of on something actually genuinely difficult.
finish GOW3s the labyrinth on chaos difficulty and not taking a single hit now THATS difficult!
thats what gold trophies should be, not this kill a gazillion enemies, or unlock every upgrade in the game crap!
i thought trophies were suppose to reward skill, not rewarding having no life!

I think some MP grinding trophies are designed by devs on purpose to artificially add game time.

They can be that's for sure. MP trophies are an abomination to the craft. Especially if you don't get a game day one. Don't get me wrong I enjoy MP but don't like it when a game's MP community shrinks up to nothing and makes it almost impossible to get said trophies. It's been a while since I got a Platinum. Looks like I am going to change that with Shadow of Mordor! The game is so addicting my 18th Platinum could be my easiest yet.

Hey! You stole my Diamond Trophy idea. Shame on You!!! Lol… Mentioned that to Sony years ago. But I suggested a Diamond Trophy for those who reach Level 75 which represents Diamond. Or maybe level 100 since some are already there or close to it.

Like others said above MP trophies like in Resistance 2 and AC: Brotherhood are just dumb. I loved doing platinum on like Vanquish and Killzone 2, those required lot of patience and skill.

I absolutely enjoy those trophies that encourage me to be better on a game.

For instance, I got the platinum trophy for Mirrors Edge, and perfecting my skills for those Speed runs was absolutely needed; or the Batman Arkham Asylum platinum trophy, to get it you must learn how and when to use every single move Batman can do while in combat.

I really really enjoy trophies but I just don't care for those that requires me to spend half of my life online.

big6

Yeah, I agree that some trophies are just ridiculous, so then the Platinum trophy was near impossible to get.

I actually don't have any platinums, but would have about 10, if I had gotten the final 1 or 2 ridiculous trophies and/or multiplayer ones.

Harerazer

I don't think Platinum trophies are hard per se, but developers make them tedious and not worth getting. I have two Platinums and didn't even know I had gotten the first one. You should be able to get Trophies thru good gameplay, not specific actions. Take Madden as an example…you have to get X amount of yards with X player. You can get more yards with another player and it doesn't even matter. I'm a fan of my team and would never play with some teams so just because of that I can't get a Trophy? I have nothing against the online Trophies if they are really something worthwhile but I'm not a Trophy Whore either so I really don't care much. I play games because they're fun.

The most original trophy I've ever gained was, well actually a Steam Achievement, but it was during Skyrim. Didn't know my laptop was unplugged and got a SA for playing while my battery life was sub 15% or something like that.

Some people say they're not that hard, but the truth is that it's different for every game. I've played a few games where I got the platinum trophy with ease and less than 15 hours of gameplay.

I've also played some games that after 200 hours of gameplay I still didn't have the platinum trophy.

I'm not a fan of trophies that require online play, or endless hours of farming.

In the end, the trophy should fit the game in a way that compliments it, not turn it into a chore.

maxpontiac

For me, it became a simple issue of time, or lack there of.

I was going strong with my Platinum Trophies at the beginning, but life took over, and now I just play to have fun.

Do I go after certain trophies? Sure, as long as they are simple. I just don't need the aggravation that is associated with the "beat campaign on mega hard" challenges.

TrophyHunter
TrophyHunter

I was exactly the same, always checking the lists of trophies and even guides, trying to get the platinum. But now I just don't even have time to play all of the games that I have, I'm just trying to complete them and then move on.

Eventually I get some platinums (like the Infamous SS one) that doesn't need something special to be done, just play the game.
