It's something fans of the genre have been saying for years.
And maybe that's why we're seeing the resurgence of the true survival/horror genre, the one that relies on thrills and chills rather than gore and action.
In the latest Weekly Famitsu issue (as translated by Kotaku ), Japanese legends Hideo Kojima and Shinji Mikami sat down to talk about the state of survival/horror entertainment. First, Mikami said Kojima "is the game creator representative of Japan" and "I truly admire him," while the Metal Gear Solid creator repaid the compliment by saying, "Mr. Mikami fights to make the games he wants to make. I believe he is one of Japan's few real 'creators.'"
Well, Mikami is responsible for the trailblazing Resident Evil , so that's a fair assessment. Afterward, Mikami was asked what he thinks about the current state of horror games:
"Looking at current survival horror games as entertainment, I feel they lean too heavily on action."
As for his new game, The Evil Within :
"I thought that I wanted to make a game that would stand up on both the fear as horror and on the enjoyment as a game."
Don't forget that Kojima is currently working on his own horror project, Silent Hills , and he has teamed up with film director Guillermo del Toro for that endeavor. These two are knee-deep in the horror genre these days, and considering their histories and successes, followers of that category should be very encouraged.
This will be on my list for sure.
I really cant wait for Silent Hills. I really enjoyed PT, and even though the actual game wont be like PT, Im still really excited for it.
Ive been watching a lot of the "lets play" videos on youtube, and all of the ones I've watched have been for indie horror game's, some of which look awesome. So I think I'm really starting to get back into game's can put me on edge.
Whenever my wife and I want to watch a horror movie, we get disappointed as they arent scary. So I keep telling her to wait until Silent Hills comes out for a good scare.
Well yeah. So I'm getting this game. Anything in an insane asylum I want.
*possible p.t. spoiler? might depend on who you ask.
p.t. got in my head bad. Still need to finish it. It's pretty sad, but man did they do a good job. Also, it apparently auto saves. I thought I would have to start from the beginning, but I didn't. Wondering why there's a weird breathing sound and then seeing the guy's head lolling to the side in his shadow was very disturbing. I think the big scare is what got me rattled the most. At least I think it's the big scare. There might be one later on.
Wasn't Guillermo del Toro developing another horror game a while back? Can't remember the name of it, or if it even had one yet. Is Silent Hills what that turned into?
inSane. It got cancelled cuz THQ died.
That's funny since the evil within looks like RE4.Game looks good, but it has tons of action.
Words of wisdom; Gospel to live by.
I be picking up Evil Within first day its release
