It was originally called Final Fantasy Versus XIII but eight years have passed since then.
Now, it's Final Fantasy XV and it's coming out…well, whenever. It's scheduled for next-gen consoles and gamers will be treated to this fresh gameplay trailer at the Tokyo Game Show.
The first official trailer debuted at TGS 2006, if I remember correctly, so it's interesting to see how far it has come. It still just looks like an action game with hit points, but at least it's an attractive game. Besides, if Square Enix embraces other role-playing elements in full and doesn't skimp on the depth (as opposed to the disappointing mess that was Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII ), it could be downright epic.
You never know.

Looks like it's gonna be an awesome game! Very impressive. Can't wait to see all the sales on Xbox One.
The visuals are impressive (what FF doesn't have amazing visuals) but the gameplay looks like DMC.
Towards the end of the trailer, say the last 5-10 seconds, did anyone hear a hint of the older FFs in the melody during that part of the video?
Perhaps I'm explaining it poorly, but I was reminded of the older FFs when the song was trailing off in the last big of the trailer.
Yeah well we knew there'd be no sign of a battle system and I did love DMC's style.
@victor it wouldn't surprise me (my speakers were down) they do redo the same melodies over and over in incredibly diverse ways to give it the same feel.
I enjoy DMC's gameplay. But not in a FF game…
Final Fantasy always has a great OST. I happen to love XIII's more than XII and X. Oh my!
Yeah it was absolutely there. I'll never forget that tune.
It's interesting you note that, in the previous gameplay trailers there was a menu like in Kingdom Hearts, I don't see that hear.. Maybe they've tried to go one step further than Lighting Returns and apply attacks to the face buttons… even so, that won't ruin the core experience for me as it seems this game has a real sense of adventure, I cant wait to explore the world in my flashy car 😀
I don't enjoy any of this crazy sh*t in an FF game but here we are. I defer to the lyrics of my band the Insane Clown Posse:
"Just because sh*ts new, it ain't betta"

I'm thinking less DMC and more Witcher. But with more sterile and ordinary wide open areas where they've dumped a "landmark" FF item, like a giant crystal or something.
and for a car that's obviously been doing a lot of travel they've either stopped at every car wash along the way or the devs figured there's no such thing as dust and bugs this world.

and can we be done with crappy flat cardboard patches of grass already? We're in the next-gen, right?

I'm happy to know I wasn't the only one 😀
@Temjin
Around parts of my university campus, I would see long patches of grass layed over the dirt after construction or renovation around a particular building.
Maybe next-gen is closer than we thought 😉
Darn you SquareEnix, how do you entice me every time!?
I wonder if the combat is going to be somewhat of an evolution of FFXII. Still want the old-school style back but whatever. That aside, it looks beautiful!

I'd be very happy with a combat engine similar to XII. I wish they would give us important details about the game. I bought a PS3 for this game…
HAHA! LV.
Wait for an official release date before buying a PS4 for this game! Could be the PS5 by the time it is released.
(it actually looks more complete than ever, so here's hoping 2015 is true)
XII battle system: engage gambits, go to bathroom, take walk, make sandwich, take nap, wake up to find all enemies defeated automatically.
World, maybe for lower level enemies. Certainly not for boss battles and stronger enemies. Perhaps you didn't explore as much as I did? One of the areas XII gets praise is the battle system. XIII, not so much…
Come on!
haha! World I'm with you on that one. I got the Zodiac Spear way early and one-handed my way through most of the rest of the game!
If you put enough thought in the gambits, you didn't have to put any thought in the battles.
@SaiyanSempai
Dude you did NOT get Zodiac Spear on your first playthrough on your own. Of course you can one-hand your way through on another playthrough 😀
No I got the Zodiac spear first playthrough, there is a way to do it with stealthing your way through the high level zones. You need a guide to do it right though and it makes the game really easy. Also I had deathbringer swords on my other 2 characters and they hit like trucks.
Most enemies I could be using berserk on 2 of them and having vaan sit back and heal them. I beat all the bosses this way and the hunts, although I definitely couldn't leave the room for the hidden bosses.
@ Banky,
Yeah, there is a way to do it on first playthrough and fairly early at that. Unfairly early, which is what I did. I can't remember the exact details, but it entailed making my characters not auto-engage enemies and RUNNING LIKE HELL in and out of the area. If you were too slow or turned the wrong corner, it was a one-hit-kill death for you!
I remember it being quite the adrenaline rush hearing a mob of insanely powerful enemies chasing me!

Guyyyyys, "on your own".
C'mon we know nobody gets the Zodiac spear without looking it up.
I like turtles.
It looks like the Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts game I never knew I wanted so badly.

About time, Final Fantasy is about to return to its glory days! ^_^
Not with an action title, but it does look like a good game.
It's glory days didn't include DMC gameplay and scenic tours in a car…
And before you remind me I'm aware that VIII had cars. It's also my 2nd least favorite FF.
There were semi-scenic car rides in FFVIII
I hate you World.
Ugh… Getting chills from seeing XBOX ONE at the end there…
Meh, I'm sure there were people upset when they saw "Sony" in the mid 90s.
He's only 20, LV. He doesn't know any better.
I'm not feeling it right now. Sure it looks pretty, but I like to look past the pretty pixels and see just exactly what type of engine and gameplay is running under there. From what I saw, I wasn't very impressed.
Why does the engine running determine if it is a good game?
Ok. Yeah. That looked incredible. I admit it.
@LimitedVertigo
FFVII also had a car, and it is considered as one of the best FF games. Anyways, XV is shaping up to be a great FF game. Let's just wait and see. ^_^
Motorbikes are cool!
Characters seem like K-pop singers…it's the only thing that I disliked.
It looks incredible there's no doubt. But the battle system is now just mashing button(s) I suppose – very DMC. For me it's only FF from the title… I don't know, maybe everything is going further these days and my mind got left behind with older FF titles.
But I will wait for final product – if it will get good reviews, I might consider it.

"It's been a long time coming…Almost there."
You got that right!
It looks beautiful like any FF should and while it looks like it's completely action city and that's disappointing, it still looks better than 13.
i heard march is the release date…if so, thats not that far along…
Damn, if it is I won't be getting this day 1 – exam time in April!
March is the release for Type-0 HD, which is supposedly coming with a demo for FFXV. The full game isn't likely to hit until 2016.
That's a bonus, in some ways, will finish that year!
The voiceover sounded remarkably cheesy, like audio from a soap opera, but the visuals looked decent indeed, and some very cool moves/attacks.
But overall I do get the feeling this game will not have the depth I prefer in my RPGs. First impression is very shallow.
Japanese voice overs always sound like that. It's no indication of the English version, mostly ever. So I don't really care about that.
As for depth, I don't really know why you are looking for any type of depth in that video. It didn't really show much, at all. For me, it just looked pretty.

It did look pretty.
But it was gameplay and the action scenes looked very hack'n'slash action'y and that's that… If the game is a lot more than what was shown there, this really is a bad trailer for the game.
Either show nothing but CGI, or show representative clips – something I suspect indeed is done here. At least that's what I am afraid of.
If it's like Kingdom Hearts, like they say it is, there should be plenty of skills and magic, etc. There should also be a lot of opportunity if they have 4 party memebers.
I still can't possibly believe an action game could have as much depth as the franchise is typically known for. I also reject the idea that most western rpgs have any real depth to battle. All the real time games are hack and slash or shoot-em-up at their core. Personally, I think games like Dragon Age 2 (the only one I played) and Mass Effect have fake depth. It's basically the same throughout. But I wouldn't expect anything too different from that type of thing.
It also doesn't help that I can't read Japanese and have no idea what they were doing on the menus, if anything.

Here's some gameplay…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udgrmaQXtRk#t=152
It looks like there's a menu in the lower left, but they either don't use anything but attack combos or it's just a HUD interface that does nothing. Can't tell.
But even this vid makes it look like a hack n' slash. I sincerely hope it isn't. The franchise used to have so much depth and uniqueness from one game to the next. It would be sad to see it diminish into something that's merely flashy.
I suspect there's more flash than substance at play here. But on behalf of all you FF fans I obviously hope I am wrong.
As for substance in western RPGs, I kinda understand what you are saying, although what's typical for western RPGs is that you got a *choice* in how you want to play the game, and therein lies the depth for me. Like Fallout, you really got a very wide range of options in how you want to build your character. I'd call that depth. Depending on your character the gameplay can really be a mixture of stealth, traps, the environment and weaponry.
Dragon Age 2 were definitely hack'n'slash. It had a sweet pinch of something extra, imo, but definitely safe on the action side of things. DA1 were a lot better in this respect.
But the Witcher games are safely rooted on the other side of the spectrum with quite deep battle mechanics. It's both timing, spells, traps, ranged, specials, combos & the lot.

it is taste, I guess. I know World likes Fallout 3 too… I found it incredibly dull and empty.
