We Shouldn’t Be Listening To Reports Of Destiny’s Length

This is the kind of thing that really bugs me.

Word on the virtual street is that the freshly released Destiny only takes 9-10 hours to complete .

Over the years, I have found that early estimations of length from hardcore gamers and some critics are ridiculously misleading. So misleading in fact, that nobody should even listen to such estimates. Firstly, they're only talking about the campaign and as every last gamer knows, there's a lot more to a game like Destiny . What percentage of gamers buying this title are going to rush right through, stick to the plot-advancing missions, and call it a day? I mean, seriously, give me a break.

Secondly, it seems a lot of die-hard gamers take great pride in flying through a game at top speed and then informing everyone it's not as long as they expected. It's just an attention-grabbing piece of pointless information. The reality is that 99.9 percent of those who purchase Destiny aren't going to see how fast they can finish it. On top of which, how can we discount the fact that this game is MMO-like, in that it never really ends? Bungie has said several times you don't ever actually "finish" the adventure, and they've also said the real experience doesn't even begin until you hit Level 20.

The informed and realistic gamer knows these things. Hence, he or she knows that "9-10 hours" is almost entirely irrelevant. The only people who are going to play this game for nine hours and stop are those who never liked it from the start. Even those "l33t" gamers who raced through it so they could put up the traffic-generating headlines are still playing it, which they of course fail to clarify.

I'd be impressed if it had 9-10 hours worth of story missions alone with someone just zipping straight through them. That's like a full length Halo campaign intermixed with all the many other things the game is doing.

I find it cool that playing competitive multiplayer helps build your character faster in single player. Getting 5,000 exp points right away just to play a few rounds of some competitive matches can boost your level building speed by alot. It also pays out items and equiptment.

Is the loot from the crucible any good?

It was pretty pointless in the beta. Getting loot from strikes or other missions was so much better.

Should probably go into detail I haven't seen any from capture but from Rumble and Skirmish it seems you have a good chance of getting Legendary Engrams I have received 3, only got 1 Legendary after decrypting though, and my friends have also received them from those two game modes.

9-10 hours?! When I got Destiny I'm not expecting finish the story and I'm done with it. I'm here for the long haul. I'll be sinking a hundred hours here. Destiny is my pseudo-borderlands, even after the story I still keep on playing for the loot.

It actually lasts a month, seeing as how that's how long we gotta wait for the next big release.

I decided to fu*k it and buy the game and I am having a blast with it. This game is definitely a coop experience and treat it as such. Hopefully it doesn't get boring. The conversations you have with your buddies help you log in hours, not the game itself. Otherwise, I feel like it would be boring.

Finishing the story missions in Destiny as it stands today just means you have finished this chapter of the story.

When the expansion drops in December it will include additional story missions and content.

Also we will be getting free content updates in future patches.

So yeah, never ends.

If you played Destiny to finish the story and then stop playing, then you're doing it wrong.

yea, it's designed to be an ongoing episodic thing. The great thing about basing a game within galaxies consisting of planetary travel opens it up to massive oppurtunities for add-ons.

This is why I'm holding out hope for this game. Over time, a really rich game universe could develop that makes this a fun game to keep revisiting over time.

Yeah well from what we've read the first two planets we could be visiting next are Europa (Moon) and Mercury. They have already established lore for both those planets and have hinted that we could be visiting Mercury in the near future, there is also a multi player map on Mercury.

While I agree that they simply rushed through the story missions and 9-10 hours is long for an fps these days, at the same time bungie/activision were claiming that it was an mmo and I've never played an MMO with a story you could finish anywhere near that quickly.

Granted there will be a lot more to the game, but you shouldn't call it something that it really isn't.

Actually, Bungie never said this was an MMO. Their definition of the game was a shared world shooter.

MMO stands for Massive Multiplayer Online, you can give it a new shiny name, but we're talking symantics here.

When it involves a large group of people playing online together, it is what it is.

These estimations are never accurate for me but I do welcome them because to me it's just one of those things that's nice to know. I don't mind them tbh.

There's a campaign in this game? Who actually went and bought this game for single player?

bigrailer19

The campaign can and is meant to be played with others so… the campaign length is still relevant.

bigrailer19

I think it is important to listen to the lengths of the story. I mean I've been playing the game since yesterday and my concerns since it's announcement stood out. The story missions are very relevant while the side missions and exploration so far is tedious and redundant. Something a game that supposed to be an MMO can't stand on. So while the story missions have proven to be excellent and highlight the games qualities the rest to some people might not be as exciting. So length is an issue.

It certainly isn't an MMO. I didn't play in the beta so this is my first experience but most MMO's I've played are much broader. This is a game that struggles with an identity. Some people said it's a mix between Borderlands and Halo. I'd argue it's more Mass Effect with a cooperative element and Halo. There's no large Open world map like most MMO'S but rather locations on a "world" map that you can enter and roam around on, on a much smaller scale. Much smaller.

I was expecting there to be a ton of other players running around too. But I'm only seeing a few aside from those in my party, even while at the Tower. So those instances that were raved about during E3 where you'll see tons of people in a fire fight and you can join in to help, is almost non existent and was apparently set up for the presentation.

Don't get me wrong the game is great for what it is. But it certainly wasn't what I was expecting but is more what I was concerned about. So expansions aside, length is a big issue for me.

This like MAG is an ongoing experience and will be revisited numerous times. I'm hoping when it's revisited next I've surpassed that 9-10 hour mark and am still thoroughly enjoying the game.

Maybe im doing it wrong, but are the so called "bounties" the side missions? If so its mainly challenges that I saw. For example my first 3 bounties were basically fetch quests like collect 200 orbs and kill 100 enemies without dying. If thats the majority of the side quests im super disappointed. I was expecting more in the way of actual missions like kill a mercenary or help quell an invasion.

The game is okay so far, but I hope it opens up more. Granted im only level 5, but if im missing something, point it out.

By the way, my psn id is tron04. Add me

The bounties are something else to be done sure, I'd considered them to be side missions. But in particular those I'm referring to are those that open up as you complete story missions. But they are more of the same. Those that I've done became available after I completed a main mission on the area and basically were go from point A to point B with in game reward like XP and some loot, but no real reward of knowing you contributed to anything.

I don't think you are missing anything. The game doesn't offer the content of an MMO which its being claimed to be. While there is a lot to do its pretty redundant. But it's early and I'm not much further along than you so it could open up quite a bit.

I'll add you!

I don't know about your game or where you live in the world, but I have had many players in the vicinity of me everywhere I go. The tower is always packed full of other players and I hardly ever play a mission without running into someone else.

Story length is not important because it is entirely subjective. It might take you 10 hours and me 16. Also the story missions do not represent the full scope of the game. Like I said, if you played this expecting to play the story and finish the game then you're doing it wrong.

People are saying they are level 5 or so and don't like the game. You really are only scratching the surface on the game hey. This is exactly why day 1 reviews of a game like this can't be trusted.

Not trying to offend you but it's clear you didn't read all of my post or are speaking directly from your feelings.

The length of the story is subjective but it matters when there's very little substance elsewhere. Which in my personal opinion is the case. Whether you agree or not, doesn't bother me any. Because this was my worry when the game was announced; that the campaign would be exactly what it is, but that it wouldn't matter if the side missions and exploring and bounties and so forth were nothing short of entertaining. To this point they are very lackluster. If you enjoy going from point A to point B and getting XP for it great this games side missions are perfect for you. I prefer story and depth and with that comes satisfaction of feeling like you actually did something.

And even with all that said, never once did I say I wasn't enjoying myself. Because I am. To this point I'd give it a solid 8.5-9 purely based on what it is. The game really is good. But my worries came true and I'm not sure a 9-10 hour story campaign (if that's really what it takes ME) can hold this game up. Because thus far nothing else can as I explained already in other posts. We will see how this all plays out as it is an ever expanding game. And sure who knows maybe it will open up later on. I'm optimistic about that.

As far as not seeing anyone, I'm in Oregon. The most people I seen at the tower was maybe 9 including myself. The most I seen while in orbit was 3.

And trust me I don't play games like this to finish the story and be done. You're talking to someone who put days into 2 different characters in Borderlands 2, who put over 250 hours in each of The Elder Scrolls games and over 100 hours in each of the Fallout games.

…anyone else really underwhelmed with Destiny so far? I wasn't exactly expecting a Mass Effect-caliber story but holy cow there is virtually no context for ANYTHING AT ALL. No one says a word about anything, it seems, at least in the early goings. I was really hoping for a ME–inspired codex or something at least, so those of us who want to know ANYTHING about ANYTHING could do the research on our own time, for those of us who like backstory (or ANY story). So far, nada.

Not every game I play needs to be a home run — the worlds are certainly beautiful, it's been fun re-discovering those crisp bungie gun physics (even if we've seen nearly identical versions of these guns in every sci-fi shooter SINCE Halo), and I sure do like outer space. But so far, this one is a firm 'meh' for me.

@World, next time I'm on I'm friending you on PSN! Been absolutely slammed at work and in personal life these days, finally getting back to some gaming…
