What’s The Last Game That Had Destiny’s Insane Hype?

I'm trying to think of the last game that generated this much hype.

I'm having difficulty coming up with one that captured so many hearts before the game ever hit store shelves. That open beta, which ended up giving 4.6 million people an early peek at the action, certainly helped.

It also helps that it's a multiplatform game; it's not an exclusive like The Last Of Us or Gears of War or something. Furthermore, because it blends so many of the biggest trends of today – shooter, open-world, multiplayer, etc. – it's difficult to find anyone who doesn't at least want to try it. Combine that with the ridiculous amount of marketing money Activision pumped into this project, and the hype level rockets into the ionosphere. What's the last game that achieved such heights on the hype scale?

Perhaps we have to go all the way back to the start of the previous generation. Maybe the first Assassin's Creed ? Or if you go even further back, Halo on the original Xbox? I suppose any of the Grand Theft Auto s would be high on the list, but still… Destiny might just take the cake.

Truth be told, I'm not sure any game ever matched the insane amount of hype that Destiny has.

But, if I had to choose a game, closest one I can think of is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (which was a fantastic game, despite its' flaws).

I don't remember a game ever having this level of hype before.

4.6 million people in the Beta. 2 million pre orders in the US alone.

It's gonna be mental.

People are already lined up at Gamestops and here I was thinking lining up an hour and a half at Bestbuy before midnight would be fine to grab the free goodies they are handing out….

Also have you heard about Gamestop calling people today/yesterday about having taken too many preorders for the Ghost Editions and now people are literally S-O-L? The Bungie forums were pretty flooded with this earlier. Especially seeing as most locations aren't even able to offer Limited Editions anymore as compensation.

Titanfall had similar hype levels I believe. Personally I thought that game was just meh.

Other than that CoD has had similar hype.

It seems that most people thought Titanfall was 'meh' after it released.

I thought it looked and sounded meh from the very beginning and I always got raged at whenever I dared say this anywhere.

Think I got thumbed down like 30 times on Gametrailers for posting my thoughts on one of the early trailers! XD

Next one will hopefully be better though now that it won't be held down by last gen.

I remember MW2 having a ton of hype but still don't think it came anywhere close to this.

Modern Warefare 2 had something similar I think. I wasn't much into the internet thing around that time, as I was busy being outside in the world but irregardless, it didn't stop friends of mine wanting me to buy it to play with them.

Other than that, nothing seems to be nearly as close to the amount of hype Destiny has.

Yeah I can't think of one most major games like Halo or CoD4 had hype but nowhere near this and it wasn't until after they came out and people got to play them did they REALLY explode.

I really think Destiny takes the cake.

Lol just thought of one! Not really a game per se but WoW Wrath of Lich King was FREAKING insane. Now that I think back I think that was the most hype I had ever experienced it was literally everywhere. I have never even played WoW.

Cataclysm later outsold it but you have to remember Lich King was back when WoW was still everywhere and the biggest game around.

GTAIV had some crazy hype. Remember all the perfect review scores it nabbed? After that maybe CoD:MW2. But I'm still not sure if they had as much as Destiny.

Does the game have that much hype? I mean I've only seen a few demonstrations at E3 conferences and i wasn't sold. Though considering what an awful year it has been I guess the fact that we're getting from a big developer should be hyped. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is by far the game I am hyped for, still contemplating buying a PS4 for spring next year.

It has literally been everywhere. Random news story about nothing on gaming sites daily. Commercials on TV all the time, huge posters and stands up in stores, it being brought up in almost any gaming discussion on game programs.

While we don't have them where I live I guess in California they have ads on Bus Stops and stuff as well.

What seems to separate Destiny from a lot of other games is that the hype is based off of reactions to the beta. People knows what's in store (quite a few doe, at least) and that's more than enough oil for the momentum behind it.

That said, nothing I can think has ever been so widely anticipated. I'm avoiding most of it due to my lack of interest, but it sure is difficult to find a safe place to stand without getting showered in Destiny talk.

GTAV had insane hype, I believe. Even GTAIV did.

I will say it would be a tie between Mortal Kombat 1, Mortal Kombat 2, and Street Fighter 2 on home consoles. Back then, their picture on the cover of a magazine…an article with a handful of screenshots had every gamer salivating to get their hands on those titles. Those were the last games that truly had me looking at my calender.

Nothing beats the hype which formed around the pristine title that is Locoroco or that of Fl0wer

I want to say Halo 2.
It was a phenomenon where I was at the time. It was the first and only midnight launch I ever attended and the line was huge, just huge.

and as far as I can tell, Destiny trumps all. Judging by the new ip pre-sell broken records that's probably a fact. And while GTAV was up there I just didn't feel the same quantity and duration of hype. Perhaps that's due to the ALpha and Beta that went up for Destiny. idk

EDIT: but I do have to mention FFVII. Not that I think it even remotely compares to the scale of gaming today, but in terms of percent to gamer userbase, FFVII was way up there too.

and if I remember right, when Halo 2 launched it's opening weekend sales trumped every entertainment launch in history, beating the prior Hollywood record holder Spider-Man

To be honest, I'm not hyped on Destiny. FPS games are my least fave type of games. Probably I'll try it if there were no longer games that are left for me to play.
