Another good month for the video game industry, and another month where PlayStation 4 is king.
The July NPD results are in and overall, the industry rose 16 percent year-over-year to $514.3 million.
Solid hardware sales sparked the rise, as hardware numbers were up 100 percent year-over-year to $198.8 million, even though software fell 15 percent to $178.2 million. It's also important to note that the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are selling must faster than their predecessors. Said NPD analyst Liam Callahan:
"When combining life-to-date sales of Xbox One and PS4 after nine months, and comparing them to the combined totals of nine months of sales for Xbox 360 and PS3, sales of the newest consoles are larger than the prior generation by close to 80 percent."
Sony also confirmed that the PlayStation 4 was the top-selling next-gen console in the US market for the seventh consecutive month, and PS4 software "led the month for next generation software sales by a considerable margin." This was undoubtedly due to the release of The Last Of Us: Remastered , which was #1 on the list.
Yep, Sony continues its success.
Long Live The King!
Props to Sony. It seems to me the next-gen won't feel like it's rocking and rolling until Febuary 2015. 3 AAA games launching that are all made with only the next-gen in mind.
MS just can't seem to close any kind of gap.
Being 7 straight months down means many many more months of straight wins for MS to ever dream of closing the gap anytime soon, if ever.
I bet the average game cost is up over 80% these days than it was 7 years ago.
Prior gens brought on 500% plus increases in dev costs of AAA games.

happy gaming
From The Last of Us to Far Cry 4 and then to The Witcher 3. Those three games will keep me busy especially since I'll start grad school next month @_@
TloU tops the charts. No wonder.
I sold my PS3 before I was ale to play TloU, but now when I bought PS4 this was day one buy. I cannot find words for how good this game is…
TloU tops the charts. No wonder.
nice to see next gen systems selling so well!
just goes to prove last gen lasted WAY too long and people were really nipping at the heels for new consoles!
especially when they sell this well with such little software out there, and more importantly such little impressive next gen not just last gen ports, or last gen sequels.
hopefully we keep up this pace, if not improve it, and hopefully the drought of new titles, and drought of innovative true next gen games does not stifle the sales.
so disappointing, almost a year in and were STILL yet to see a SINGLE game that makes you go wow yes now THATS next gen!
still sitting here saying seriously, come one i did not wait EIGHT freaking years for this!
even AC unity, i was chuffed to bits to hear its a next gen only game.
great, fantastic, no limits, no worries of having last gen holding it back, this will be amazing and show off a new era of AC!
ahhhh, no its the same as last years title but with a much better more fluid animation system.
sigh.
when are we going to stop with last gen experiences tweaked slightly, to all new experiences, things that really show of how games can evolve and offer so much more?
