That was the estimate heading into the show and now it's official.
During their Gamescom briefing today, Sony confirmed that PlayStation 4 had reached 10 million sold worldwide. Sony boss Jim Ryan reminded everyone that this number is a sold-through statistic; in other words, it's not the number of console shipped, but the number of systems actually sold to consumers.
The company said this represents the "fastest and strongest growth" in the brand's history. Said Sony in a statement:
"The responses we have received for the PS4 system's unique gameplay experiences powered by the network, along with its vast game portfolio has been phenomenal, and I am absolutely delighted that PS4 was able to reach this commemorative milestone in less than 9 months. We're so grateful for the enormous support from PlayStation gamers worldwide, and we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and services in the months ahead."
As for software, Sony has moved a combined 30 million copies (total retail and digital) as of August 10. Yes, this generation has proven awfully successful for PlayStation.
I was going to write a comment about people not liking the console's game line up or how the games don't feel next gen enough to buy the PS4 like it's a recreational drug. But damn, 10 million consoles ain't easy to pull off. Congratulations Sony. Hopefully you'll make a smart choice and invest in some 3rd party exclusives, I mean, there is no reason not to at this point.
on June 9th they announced 8.1 million sold. With it being Aug 12th at 10 million we can calculate what they're averaging. So in the span of just over two months they sold 1.9 million consoles. That means they're pushing about 950k per month and 237K per week, globally.

Lol i got so excited when i saw that announcement
You really can't help with being impressed with how far ahead PS4 is in sales… Sales even exceeded Sonys expectations
This is a very impressive number, and the best thing about this is that it is sold through numbers.
Every single time Microsoft announces numbers 'sold' they are only talking about shipped, not sold to customers. I don't even know if XB1 has sold more than 5 million yet.
Yea its really annoying i wish they would just give us a damn number… I dont think they've sold 5 million either even though a few sites estimated they've sold 5 million but without MS official announcement its a bit hard to believe… I think MS doesnt want anyone anyone to kno exactly how far behind they are in sales compared to Sony
"I think MS doesnt want anyone anyone to kno exactly how far behind they are in sales compared to Sony"
That's exactly it. Sony's announcement of sales milestones is a sign of confidence and Microsoft's unwillingness to do likewise is a sign of weakness. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see another to see another price drop on the Xbone in the next six months.
But how do they know?
Let's say I create a small computer games store, "Beamboom Games". Sweet lil' store.
I order ten PS4 from Sony, and they ship them to me. During the next month I sell five PS4. So after one month I got 5 PS4 left in store.
Now, this means the the numbers at this point in time must be "10 shipped, 5 sold" right?
But how do Sony know how many PS4 my store sold those weeks? Do they call each retailer and ask? Am I obliged to report my numbers to them? How on earth can they know?
Or is "sold-through" simply an estimation, based on orders from the store and how many they have shipped?
Or… Is it *really* the number sold from Sony (as opposed to shipped, who might be a lower number if they have not yet shipped every unit that is sold)?

I think they heard it through the grapevine.
"Beamboom Games"
I'd definitely shop there 😉
Anyway, I'm not sure how they could register those numbers. Could online console activation be a viable form of doing so?
Sounds like a cool store, but I doubt I'd ever find any jRPG's there. :'(
I don't have any idea how a manufacturer tracks sales, so I don't have good insight on this topic.

Yeah..how do they know? Cuz the claims that Sony's numbers are more genuine/accurate as MS only releases numbers "shipped" doesn't hold much water unless we know for sure that there's a solid tracking method in place to know the number of actual units sold by SONY.
Nice, that's a lot for not even a year on sale.
yeah and we aren't even 12 months in yet wonder what that number is going to look like 15mil??? anyone or is that too much.
happy gaming
Not sure about anyone else, but thus far, I've been disappointment with the PS4 and I cannot recall a time when I was disappointed with a Playstation console.
