This has been bugging me for a few months now.
When gamers get it into their heads that something is a certain way, they absolutely abuse anyone who dares to go against that tide.
These days, the trend is obvious: Reboots and Remasters are bad, in that they're nothing more than "cash grabs" by money-hungry publishers (notwithstanding the fact that nobody is forcing consumers to buy anything). And apparently, if you don't acknowledge this as fact, you're just a sucker and "exactly what's wrong with the industry today." I actually heard a Best Buy employee tell this to someone who wanted to pre-order The Last Of Us: Remastered . That elitist prick totally lambasted this guy who appeared simultaneously outraged and confused.
He was accused of A. Buying a game just because publishers told him to, and B. Buying the game because there wasn't anything else to play on the PlayStation 4. I mean, the employee attempted to do this in a joking manner, but it just came across as ridiculously stupid and offensive. But it's an attitude I'm seeing and hearing more of in the gaming community; there are many out there who honestly believe you're some sort of idiot if you intend to buy the Remastered version of one of gaming's best ever titles. Of course, they don't bother to ask if the person has never played TLoU before.
I get why you're against reboots and remasters and the like. But is there any particular reason you have to turn this into a social, business, and freakin' philosophical statement? Like, anyone who "falls" for Sony's little "trick" is just automatically inferior? Give me a break .
Related Game(s): The Last Of Us: Remastered
Sounds like Best Buy is turning into Gamestop.
Thats sad when you run into real life examples of fanboyism, the guy must have hated that TLoU was such a huge hit. It always comes in a passive aggressive way too.
Nobody at BB would question you buying the 7th remake of the Master Chief jackoff edition Halo 12 though.
TLoU deserves every remastered sale it gets, it achieved stuff for the industry good for everybody.
I signed up just to respond this, but you sound every bit of an elitist snob as you make out the BB employee to be.
The fanboyism works both ways if you hadn't noticed the console war going on?
The Halo franchise has achieved much more than TLoU, defining and changing an entire genre and giving gamers one of the most iconic and noticeable heroes ever in the video game industry, not to mention Halo 2 had one of the best multiplayer experiences, just so ya know… Before you start on again about TLoU and its achievements.
Everyone should be excited about both remasters, but if you still are not convinced, keep in mind the MC collection includes several games, not just one 🙂 Nostalgia heaven for soooo many gamers!

What Poseidon said.
And welcome to the site, Poseidon! Hope you're here to stay. We can always use more nuanced personalities around here. 🙂
I don't think World's point is that TLoU deserves one and Halo doesn't. He's pointing out the lunacy and double standard some people have with being ok with a Halo remaster but not other remasters.
It's also worth noting, since you're new here, that World isn't the biggest fan of TLoU.
For me, the big disappointment is people who keep calling this the "year of the remake"… saying only remakes and remasters are coming out… it makes no sense. As far as I can see, the only one coming out for PS4 is the TLoU remaster. How does that supersede the other games releasing, like Driveclub and LBP3?
And of course MC is an iconic character. It's the flagship XBOX mascot. (Which, for me, is tragic that it was largely released for PC as well if he's to be the XBOX mascot) I loved me some Halo back in the original XBOX days, but the interest has largely waned since then. (I hope that doesn't make me a hating, elitist fanboy, Poseidon.) There's nothing wrong with disliking it, either. I also dislike GTA, God or War, Gears of War, Gran Turismo, and Forza (to name games that people think are amazing). It would serve you well not to confuse that with elitist fanboyism.

Calm down son, its not a war here. My suggestion that the employees at BB love Halo more is not snobbish in any form, it's just some anecdotal evidence.
And shame on your for siding against me Beam.
I'm not siding with anyone, but I do agree with Poseidon and would have commented on it had he not done it already.
"the 7th remake of the Master Chief jackoff edition Halo 12" – sorry buddy, but what that quote implies of disrespect of that franchise does qualify as platform war fanboy ramblings. Especially when you juice up your comment with " the guy must have hated that TLoU was such a huge hit" – as if Halo was any less of a hit.
In all friendliness. 🙂
As for the topic itself, I won't buy either and leave it at that.
I don't thing it reads at all like disrespect for the game itself… :
To me, it's saying the BB employee, for example, would likely disrespect a TLoU remake, but would not apply that same logic to a Halo game even if it had an absurd name like the one World made…
It was an over-the-top example to make a point. Not sure how you can interpret it otherwise.
I just felt the need to say something cause it seemed like World was being slightly ignorant, on the other hand, perhaps I was a little quick to jump the gun lol.
Glad to be on this site, people seem more friendly here than other sites I have been on.
The Best Buy employee should be happy someone is actually purchasing something in the store! Most are ghost towns these days.
Ben, did you say anything to the employee or customer? I would have said something myself.
No, but I probably should've.
Man I don't care what the naysayers have to say. I'm buying what I want when I want because it's my own hard earned money to spend on what I like. Folks complaining about it are either trolls or just plain haters.
The best part is, a good chunk of the naysayers are just butt hurt over the paying to play spiel.
Another major contributor to our gaming society is the overwhelming demand for freeware. I'm sure they'd have a different tone if THEY were involved remastering the software.
I can't remember the last time that I enjoyed working for free.
Wow… I've shared my stories of in-store fanboyness. This is pretty bad though. Some major f-ing BS.
Thanks for writing this Ben, it needs to be said.
This situation is just astounding.
Well.. that's not a smart employee if he's attempting to persuade a consumer from making a purchase.
Yes, the game is remastered, but it has never been strange for games to come out on multiple systems, which is exactly what's going on. Many PS4 owners may not have been PS3 owners and as an obvious consequence, couldn't play the original. I don't see how it could simply be a cash grab (Though the cash will be grabbed). It's good for the company and people new to Playstation. If it's a big hit, I wouldn't be surprised to see a remastered Uncharted trilogy, but that is probably be too much of an undertaking. Then again, Bioware did that with the first two Mass Effect games for Sony so who knows.

People can hate on me all they want. For the last few years I have waited to purchase games until about 2 years after release because they always come out with a definitive, goty, mega, super, wonderful, awesome, uber edition at some point that even if they don't improve the graphics it has all of the add on content included and usually starts at 2/3 the original price.
So call me what you want, but I spend less money, still give my money to the developer, and enjoy the best versions of the games.
When I get my ps4 I'll be buying lots of remakes of games I didn't buy for my ps3 because they have a better version for ps4.
In the end I spend a lot less money and have more games than I have time to play.
i wouldn't i mean a good friend of mine is getting it cos he hasn't had a change to play it untill now with it on the ps4 cos his ps3 broke and he only just with the ps4 was on playstation again so i have no problems i was eventhing about it myself even though we have it on the ps3.
happy gaming
I know 5 people who never played it because they had 360 and 5 that are dub dipping including me Can't wait
i would have said something like this:mind your own business:) and order my game and stfu and do your work.
I will get this game[again],i sold my first TLOU,i did not have the dlc [single-player] and that's now also included.
i'm not so into the remakes and reboots in general, but there's always room for some exceptions.
But anyway, everybody should buy what he/she wants to buy.
AND:reboots and remakes are also good for newcomers.
So the guy who was selling games is the sucker himself anyway

I'm not going to get it as I already have it for the PS3. However, I don't begrudge anyone who wants to get it. For those that don't have a PS3, it'll be the first time they'll have to play this great game. Regardless of why a person's getting it, it's that person's entertainment dollars* that are being spent; it's not up to me or anyone else to chastise them for spending them how they wish to spend them.
* Yes, I know not everyone uses dollars.
This reminds me of an exchange when Homer was buying a new computer.
Homer: How about that one?
Computer Clerk: That tech is three months old. Only suckers buy out of date technology. You're not a sucker, are you, sir?
Homer: Heavens no!
Computer Clerk: That's good because I would have had to ask you to leave the store.
This story almost seems too fantastic to believe it happened in a real life setting. If it did, then that is definitely a shame on the part of the salesperson. No one should be mocked for their gaming choices. That being said, as much as Sony fans try always act like the put upon members of the gaming community, the extremist Drones are in full effect out there. Ive overheard a few exchanges with people trying to purchase a Wii U or X1 that were downright sad and an embarrassment to gamers as a whole.
I re-lost faith earlier this year at EB Games (Canada's gamestop) when the employee told me that Lightning Returns was actually selling surprisingly well and was being well received.
How are GOTY editions ok, but remasters are not?
Additionally, why do people call this "The year of the remaster" when there's like… 1 for both XB1 and PS4, yet we get half a dozen or more GOTY editions every year that we're ok with happening?
People are frickin' weird.
Yeah, I don't get the "Year of the remaster" thing either. People do like to complain though!
Yeah,GOTY editions are for me also not very interesting.
You're right, there aren't many remasters,i hope that next year there will be some more next gen and less cross-gen

I love remastered editions. They induce hype and enough graphics incentive for me to replay some of the best games that developers have ever made.
I may not buy TLoU: Remastered right away, because I played it only a year or so ago, but I'll buy it eventually.
I don't mind remasters.
I think some core gamers are feeling so hungry for new games from the PS4 that they're getting aggressively emotional about it.
I bet if TLoU remaster came out 2 years from now, when big new games will be releasing a plenty, very little would be said about how bad these remasters suck.
And really, both sides of the camp are feeling it. XboxOne's biggest holiday release is a Halo HD re-release.
These companies just aren't giving gamers enough of what they want. They're just making their discontent heard.
EDIT: I mean really, just think of that article about Uncharted remasters here the other day. Here we have the highest rated franchise and most esteemed one (with TLoU as it's only competition), and it was forty percent rejected from a PS news site. That says something

@Ben Dutka
I'm betting that same Best Buy employee wouldn't have any problems encouraging customers to buy the Halo MC collection.
Not to say that that is bad (I myself have pre-ordered both TLOU PS4 & Halo MC Collection XB1), but encouraging one platform's remasters while at the same time ridiculing those of another platform would be nothing more than fanboyish hypocrisy.
@Beam and Poseidon
This is exactly what World said above. Exactly. (Assuming you're able to not read things so literally)
"while at the same time ridiculing those of another platform […] would be nothing more than fanboyish hypocrisy" -> "jackoff edition Halo 12"
That's my entire point, really.

… point being?
Oh bother.
Last edited by Beamboom on 7/28/2014 2:47:18 PM
Indeed.
It was so in-your-face obvious about being over-the-top that I found it laughable you guys saw it as some sort of elitist insult and not the funny example to illustrate a valid point it so clearly was.
My point is that your point is received with a quick smirk and an eye-roll. Because, really, you don't make a point other than you didn't like his choice of example… which is so silly of you to do since the purpose of an example is to help illustrate the point… which is exactly what was done. Trying to delve deeper into the example and find insult within is too much akin to wanting to be insulted for my liking.

Everything the store clerk said is true. It is a fast sale to make money on a system that, as of right now, has NO GREAT GAMES on it. So naturally they think and know it will sell.
The ps4 have some good games, but most of them are either the free ones that you pay transactions with OR the Indie games. BF4 sucks ass. Need for Speed is not next gen, and Assasin's Creed is rather boring to me.
Quite sure there's no one forcing anyone to buy remasters. For hard core fans of certain games, they're terrific. If you're not into it? Play something else. Really don't understand the acrimony.
I for one will be picking up the remaster eventually, once the price goes down some. I picked up the $80 collector's edition and the DLC, so think I'll wait for a deal. Not to say its not worth the full price tag, but I rarely buy games full priced unless I know for sure it will be a great game. I know TLoU is an awesome game but its still too fresh in my mind make me pick up the remaster full price, even though it looks amazing. Now, what I never got the chance to pick up on PS3 was the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection, I would absolutely jump all over that if they put it on PS4. Think the first remaster I will get though might be GTA V, never picked it up when it came out either.
