PS4 vs. Xbox One TV Ad War: Sony Is Spending More Cash

So far in 2014, which manufacturer has spent more on television advertising? Sony or Microsoft?

The result may surprise you: According to a Wall Street Journal report citing new iSpot data, it's Sony.

Sony has spent $59 million on TV ads for the PlayStation 4 through the end of May 2012, while Microsoft only spent $34.7 million on Xbox ads in the same period. Both companies focused on the same channels, as most of the commercials landed on FOX, ESPN and Comedy Central. Microsoft extended their reach to AMC and TBS, while you could find more PS4 ads on FOX Sports 1 and TNT.

iSpot's data accounts for the number of times an ad was aired, viewed online, and the number of social interactions it generated. Thus far, PlayStation's "Greatness" TV spot has been the most effective; for Xbox, it has been the "All-in-One" ad. Good to see Sony stepping up the marketing this generation!

Good. Sony's finally learned from their mistakes. Actually, didn't you doubt they would Ben? I think like a year ago or more you doubted how they would handle things. They seem to be doing better than ok this time around.

Well Sony wasn't exactly swimming in cash for a good chunk of last gen, so they couldn't afford to spend money on tv ads.

Playstation is one of the best performing divisions within Sony right now, so why not spend some extra millions to build the user base early? A lot of people won't buy more than one console so those platform holder fees and accessory sales will add up.

Is that just in America or the world? Otherwise Sony has to cover more in countries that despise Xbox.

Well about time Sony. I'm happy they are stepping it up a notch. But I've always wondered as well as tv ads what about store ads in newspapers? like walmart, target, best buy, fred meyer, etc. from what i've seen xbox seems to spend more on those cause I'm always seeing Xbox ads in them.so i just tear the ad up.lol.

yeah that's a big mistake, you need to get eyeballs on your system at an early age when kids look through these to tell mom what they want. If all they see is Xbox they will think that's the coolest one. So Sony needs to make an effort there.

I wish Sony gave me 59 million dollars to advertise the PlayStation brand. Heck, I'd settle for 34 Microsoft millions.

How would I advertise? Paint my car blue/green and let all my friends, coworkers, and family know about the PS/XB.

Through the end of May 2012? Am I reading that right, or was that supposed to be 2014. Just curious 🙂

quite the opposite here actually.
$ony never have been big spenders in advertisement and i guess never will be.
perfect example TLoU remastered is out in exactly 30 days but im still yet to see a single add on TV, electrical billboard, posters at game stores, buss stops, ect, ect.
hell bus stops, busses and stores are already littered with advertisements for halo collection and thats not out for another 5 months!
