Unity Ditches Competitive Multiplayer To Focus On Co-Op

For the first time in four years, there will be no competitive multiplayer option in a new Assassin's Creed installment.

Why? Well, Ubisoft level designer Bruno St-Andre answered that question in a new GamingBolt interview . Thing is, they want to put an emphasis on co-op play this time around.

" We developed core mechanics more on cooperation instead of confrontation. So we put a lot of effort into redefining the fights so that multiple players can actually engage in them and have a better strategy against the AI, which reacts differently each time. Same thing for navigation and same thing for the stealth. All of our effort and our decisions were based on this topic. We really wanted to be focused on that. "

St-Andre added that demand for co-op in Assassin's Creed has been evident since the franchise first came into being. He says fans have been asking for it every year, and the team feels they can finally deliver a worthwhile co-op experience with the next-gen consoles. Don't forget that Assassin's Creed: Unity won't be available on the PS3 and 360; it's only coming to the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

I'll still never play an AC for the multiplayer but I have to admit, co-op is vastly more attractive than competitive.

Praise The Sun!

That sucked anyways. Now all they gotta do is fix the story… and we have Assassins Creed back.

Yup, gotta focus on the new gimmick so nobody will notice it's another AC title so soon.

I'am sure if they made a FF game every year you would have nothing to say. Anywho can't wait for this, just a FYI this game has been in the making for 3 years just saying….

No, BigBoss, I can pretty much guarantee annualizing FF would make fans even more rabidly violent. It would be seen as a negative. You'll never hear that concern though… it seems to have the opposite effect… we've been waiting for versus (now XV) for how many years now? 6? 7?

The franchise seems to have taken a bit of a hit with the frequency of the XIII titles, too. The most recent one only selling 10-20% of the original one. So, yeah… no.

As for the FFVII remake, no, they'll probably never do it. But the hope for it to come that exists out there is largely the company's fault for like… bringing it up and wondering out loud if people would want one. Things like that don't help quell the push.

You guys won't let me be cynical about AC will you? I'm just tryin to have some fun 🙂

Ahh yeah… an FF every year, even a good one every year, wouldn't be as good as having those astonishing epics every few years.

No I've given up on that remake, only a company that is in favor of making money would do that.

Excellent, that's the right focus! This is the real deal when it comes to coop as far as I am concerned. Working together through a storyline.

I'm hoping the co-op element addition ends up watering down the SP so it's more playable.

I applaud this incredibly and it may get me into AC finally. Co-op is only for people who use skill and not focus on finding the computer glitches and blindspots. I just hope Ubisoft really boosts the AI into being smart and not just programmed cheaply.
