Microsoft “Tips Their Hat” To Sony, But Says It’s Still Early

Currently, the PlayStation 4 has the lead in the next-gen console war.

However, while Xbox boss Phil Spencer congratulates Sony on a successful launch, he adds that we're barely 10 percent of the way into this new generation. This is what Spencer said in a pre-E3 interview with GamesIndustry International :

"You look at what Sony has sold, and congratulations to them; they've had a great launch. Maybe we're 10 percent of the way into this generation, so we're early, early days in how this will all play out. I tip my hat to them. I think they'll likely have a great [E3], and they should; they're coming in with a lot of strength. But this is a long-term competitive space, which is good for consumers."

As it turns out, Sony did have a solid E3 show, but many would argue that both Microsoft and Nintendo did as well. Earlier this month, Microsoft removed Kinect from the standard Xbox One bundle, allowing them to lower the price by $100. Now, both the PS4 and Xbox One have a $399 price tag, so it'll be interesting to see how the competition progresses through the rest of 2014.

Elsewhere in the interview, Spencer confirmed that Kinect is here to stay, and although he thinks virtual reality initiatives like Oculus are cool, Microsoft doesn't currently have any plans to pursue such a venture.

Haha, sums it up rather well. When will they realize gamers don't care about Kinect? I like that they've so quickly alienated their fans. But than again I don't consider most people that favor an X1 as the type of gamer I identify with.

Yeah there's a long way to go, but historically that has always been Sony's territory. They do better over time while MS tends to slowly fold into itself while scrambling to buy up exclusive content.

I'll second that comment

I know they just launched, but I think they will have less time than in the past. This generation didn't include any major hardware changes like in the past. They pretty much just upped the processing, ram, and video memory.

So I think unless someone introduces some new tech to go with the new systems, this gen will not last as long as previous generations.

Yes, of course there is a long way to go, but the fine folks at MS have to realize that the Sony isn't just going to sit back and relax.

It's going to take much, much more then Halo, Forza, and Gears to overtake Sony from a world wide standpoint.

The Xbox One is actually cheaper than the PS4 in Canada now. Microsoft has kept their Canada/US prices the same, while Sony has raised their prices in Canada. So now, when comparing costs at least, Xbox has the advantage here…

I'm still a little sore on that price hike, but it's no different now than back in the PS3's early days when it was $50 – $100 more expensive here than the US. We've just been spoiled for a few years with price parity.

Yeah Phil and everyone else at MS had this…very frightened aura around them during E3 week. They walked around with this feeling of desperation. It was so heavy in the air before, during, and after E3. I still feel it to this day, and this isn't helping. I love Halo 1 and 2. I feel Halo 1 is one of the best games ever made, but reselling it, again, is ridiculous.

Shoulda made it free with Gold instead. While giving people Halo 2-4 instead. MS thinks by bringing back a ton of random old ips that they will magically win and that everyone will come running for their exclusive games when they seem to forget…their fans don't care about innovation or interesting games. They want whats flashy and easy to play. Dark Souls for 360 and pc combined sold around 700k while it sold 1.4 million on the ps3. HUGE differences in sales there. All of those exclusive JRPGs didn't sell very much either.

That one everyone goes on about, Lost Odyssey, only sold around 730k in its lifetime. That would have sold quite a bit more on the Playstation. MS will learn this generation to please the easily convinced flock to follow them, its pretty much all they can do at this point. I do respect Phil trying to bring everyone back but he's doing it in a way that shows his weak side. We can all see it in his eyes, if he doesn't pick up xbox soon his m-ass is grass.

Mario Kart 8 brought life back into the Wii u and its now selling more than xbox one. So not only is xbox one not selling more than ps4, its not 3rd in the consoles list. Hell it sold more in the US than xbox one did for awhile. So Nintendo's now finally being something to worry about. If Mario Kart alone did that, whats the new Zelda and SSB game going to do?

long post but I had to say it. People at MS were scared, like if they didn't do well something bad was going to happen to them. Just to add in, it was very annoying to hear them say "we're all about the games" when last year, it was nothing about the games. The complete change of everything and pretending it didn't happen is sickening.

I'm trying to think of a time when a company was being smoked by the competition and then somehow that underdog reverses things. I really can't think of a time. So while Phil may believe things are still early so no winners can be declared just yet history doesn't suggest anything different should happen. Perhaps maybe they can save the US. But it would seem they're a good 30% below the PS4 in this territory. It would take something massive, something console gaming has never seen, for MS to recover from all of that lost ground.

You'd have to see MS do what Sony did last gen… stay the course and keep improving and bringing more top notch exclusive content. Problem is, I'm not sure MS has the same first party studios Sony did.

Sony also had the advantage of their complex hardware, while obviously damaging at the start, allowed us to see each year get more and more impressive while the 360 seems to have plateaued a number of years ago. PS3 only seems to have peaked last year or so.

exactly why i have so much respect for phil, hes a true gamer none of this typical childish pot shot crap $ony constantly keeps doing.
hes got a good respect for everyone no matter who they work for.
even the way he started his press conference at E3 showed exactly that.
no cheap childish pot shots, just a pure respect and the truth that the rapid sales of next gen consoles is good not just for their manufacture, but for the whole industry.
phil is the best thing to happen to M$ since father ken got booted out of $ony!
you can tell he has a real passion to bring the best games possible to his system, hence all the new studios they have been creating, and the mass of new games they have announced.
