Last year, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima said Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V looked so good that it actually "depressed" him.
He wasn't sure he could get his own upcoming game, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain , to reach that level of graphical brilliance. Now, after GTAV was announced for next-gen consoles and PC, well…the poor guy is depressed all over again.
During a recent CVG interview , Kojima said:
"What Rockstar has created and the world they have created is super impressive, and actually when I saw the PS4 version a few days ago I got depressed again. And this is not game design-related it's just me. The quality that they showed in the PS4 trailer was really impressive."
We saw a pretty awesome trailer for The Phantom Pain during Sony's show as well, so he shouldn't be selling himself short. Kojima also said the Rockstar went in a "very different direction" as compared to the game he's trying to make. Honestly, this is someone who shouldn't be feeling outclassed in the world of video game development.
But hey, that's the hallmark of the perfectionist.

He's obviously trolling.
It's not even trolling, it's just frantic gibberish.
You man up too Kojima.
His trailer blew me away, it was sick. Why the hell is he depressed? Talk about little faith in oneself. His series isn't legendary because he had little faith in it. Losing faith in yourself will only lead to the downfall of your ambitions.
He does this all the time. He knows what he's doing. He's just throwing out some BS and laughing at the reactions he gets.
When you're close to a project it's hard to see it objectively.
I hope Limited is right. It's certainly not hard to believe when you consider Kojima's past credibility. If this is not the case, then maybe Metal Gear should have honed in the PS4 only? Just a thought.
Wow. I hope the guy isn't really depressed about it. GTAV looks great, even more so in the PS4 version. That's impressive for an open world game as large and full of content as it is. But it still isn't as nice as Kojima's offering.
Ground Zeros is gorgeous and The Phantom Pain videos I've seen are downright jaw dropping. Hands down the best visuals I've ever seen. And the maps are pretty damn big too.
He shouldn't be too depressed because his games tend to be a bit better graphically than most Japanese ones but rather than get depressed he should get busy making it better.
It's terrible that Japanese devs have so much trouble reaching western pace.
GTAV does look pretty damn good, but Kojima's game has to be the best looking one I've seen so far.
I think he's just being modest. You tend to do a better job if you don't get big-headed.
Agreed. Most interviews seem to portray him as being shy about his achievements. These remarks are little out of the norm, but nothing to worry about overall.
Imagine a Kojima Rockstar collaboration. Would something like that ever be possible? It would have to be quite an endeavor otherwise why bother but if both sides brought their A game to such a project it could be MINDBLOWING.

I'm a huge fan of GTA V but having already played it I'm way more looking forward to The Phantom Pain than re-visiting GTA V. Hopefully Kojima can get his next masterpiece out by next June.
On a regular basis this guy reminds me of a kid saying "oh my drawing suuuuck", waiting for their parents to respond with, "nononooo it's SO good, baby, you're the best!".

exactly, lol!
Can someone get this man some damn antidepressants?
Kojima's got nothing to worry about, but I think I get what he's saying. rockstar seems to put together beautiful games with surprisingly deep stories in much less time than what Kojima's team churns out, so I could understand if he seems a little deflated, but overall I'm sure this is just his way of giving a big compliment.
He should be depressed the intro of GTAV lasts more than Ground Zeroes.
zing
why would that be depressing?
if anything it should inspire you, not depress you!
unless hes sad and worried people will finally wake up to his crap and demand more…….
