Okay, so there have been a few game delays. But it's not because designers are having trouble with the PlayStation 4.
The Order: 1886 has been delayed until 2015 and Driveclub had to be pushed a few times as well. What's the deal? We thought the PS4 was supposed to be easier for game makers to grasp.
Well, according to Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida, these game delays are a result of the developers' amped-up ambition and vision. In speaking to PlayStation LifeStyle at E3, Yoshida addressed the recent delays:
"So I apologize for some of the games we pushed back, but when people ask me “We’ve been saying the PS4 is very easy to develop for, why are teams taking time?” The reason is, it’s very easy to develop games on the PS4, except that PS4 can do so much, that a team’s ambition is much higher. What they are trying to achieve, they are challenging, y’know, something new. More realistic graphics, social connectivity, or seamless integration of single-player and multiplayer. And they are encountering new kinds of challenges, so they have to take more time than they anticipated."
We don't doubt that the PS4 is easier to develop for, and it's great that developers are being allowed to stretch their wings. However, nobody likes delays, right? That goes double when we're talking about hugely anticipated exclusives for a new piece of hardware, so here's hoping the trend doesn't continue.
Plus what we have isn't very good so far, so I'm thinking it's more the effect of poor future planning. PS4 was on the drawing board a long time ago, they should have anticipated this.
I think your expectations were too high to begin with. This gen isn't about huge strides in whatever you're expecting to see, but about catching up with resolutions and framerates.
Here is a video that I've been wanting to post here but hadn't found a good, relevant opportunity to do so. http://youtu.be/Cxhs-GLE29Q

World this feeling actually happened with the 360. I clearly remember how un-next-gen it felt until Gears of War made it's splash. GRAW was a mild sorta-there feel. So the multi plat production machine more or less had a head start for the PS3, as the ground work was already being laid from the 360 hardware hitting early. So while early PS3 multi plat games suffered from being inferior to 360's what PS3 was getting was better than the first year 360 stuff, which mostly felt like high-res Xbox and PS2 stuff.

Hopefully in the next few years that same advancement happens. It just kills me to see all the same things being done that aren't necessary anymore like sliding camera FPS and TPS where the character just bounces off the environment. It's crazy, it's time to refine these mechanics to feel more natural.
I agree World, I am too a bit surprised by this. The console specs surely must have been more or less ready for years already, at least on a basic level. The work on the first titles surely could have been started years ago.

f*ckin right!
I think you guys are missing the point. What he's saying is that developers can make PS3 level games without a problem but when that stuff is laid out they say "We can also make this do that" and then they add or change more stuff, which delays it. It's the creativity of the developers that cause a delay, not that they can't come to grips with the hardware. That's also why we're getting so many mobile ports. Now that the hardware is so much more in line with what they've been working on it's quicker to release these games. Console programmers have had to write twice basically in the past, now that the actual coding takes less time they want to do more. I'd much rather have that than the standard PS3 games upscaled.
It'd be an insult if developers who b*tched and moaned about the difficulty in making a game run on a PS3 were having trouble learning to develop for the PS4.
Honestly there has been so much bitching and whiney since the PS3 released that I have just gotten use to there being spoiled gamers. That video Cesar nails it though. Gamers are the problem. The casuals don't count cause they honestly don't care.
So long as these games with big ambitions are not glitchy, laggy, and whole-fully incomplete. Then the delays are welcome. But when a game comes out half-broken and almost unplayable, then their ambition is obviously too much or they rushed through it. Sick of buying and expecting greatness when all I get for D1 is bf4 lag and glitches.
But its good they are ambitious and willing to push the envelope. Just dont do too much were if something goes awry then that would affect the whole game on launch.
'I apologize.' This has me nervous that soon enough we're going to start seeing Yoshida repeat 'please undastand.'
The more realistic graphics part is the most fastest to get on the PS4,the others can be challenging if the team has not worked on that type of feature before.
That's why you're getting Bloodborne so fast because the dev knows how to make the integration between single player and multiplayer and the graphics already look stunning.
Uncharted 4 has amazing graphics is also coming out next year.
Watch Dogs and Driveclub got delayed because they're trying to integrate social connectivity which they hadn't done before.
thats not the problem, the problem is $ony still has so many of their WWS with unannounced games.
theres nothing on the horizon that makes me say yes now that is worth buying a ps4 for.
their E3 was f*cking PATHETIC!
i mean the most exciting game announcement was LBP 3, a freaking 2D platformer!
$ony, the best thing they had to offer at the industries biggest event, is a freaking 2D platformer!?
seriously!?
thats like ferrari turning up to the geneva car show and showing off a freaking leggo model set!
thats the problem, people need something to give them a reason to buy a ps4, and LBP 3 certainly is NOT going to do that!
and quite frankly there still is nothing that does!
amazes me how M$, a company who has squat first party studios, can turn up to each event and announce multiple new exclusives, yet $ony, the company who has THE largest first party lineup, is left scratching for crumbs!
mind boggling!!!!!!!
Delays are always disappointing, but I have kids now and limited time to game. As a result, it gives me some time to work on my backlog.
heres hopeing that they know how much time they need now so there aren't any delays and we'll know when they are finished.
happy gaming =)
