Why won't Assassin's Creed: Unity be on the PlayStation 4 or Xbox 360?
Quite simply, because it "can't be done."
This is what Ubisoft senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key told GameSpot during E3. Key made it very clear that the newest entry in the series is a "next-gen game."
"It's built for next-gen; it can't be done on current-gen, at least we haven't figured out how and we're not trying to."
Key added that Unity is one of the few major multiplatform releases in 2014 that will exclusively land on next-gen consoles. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Batman: Arkham Knight were scheduled to release this holiday season but now, both are slated for 2015. There are rumors that Ubisoft plans to bring another AC title – dubbed "Comet" – to the PS3 and 360 but that isn't official just yet.
If you missed the E3 trailer for Unity , here it is. …yeah, doesn't look like the older hardware could handle this.
That's truly pitiful how few next gen only games there are coming.
Install base.
Didn't stop anybody at the last changeover. There were just a few cross gen games.
The next-gen systems don't even seem to have the merit to back up the claim of any game not being able to run on it's predecessor, the leap was like a step up one stair rather than a leap up a few floors.
It was all the negative nancy talk about the new gen of consoles struggling, so games (which take 2-3 years to build, so the games releasing this holiday season were 'laid down' over a year before the new consoles launched) were designed with both gens in mind. It'll change a lot next year, as by that stage it'll be two years since launch (and longer since the pre-order numbers showed the new consoles were likely to do a good deal better than the internet had been suggesting up to that time).
In short, it's the combination of publishers listening to PC/mobile elitists on the internet and not realising they were a loud niche, rather than representative of the market, combined with the time it takes to build a AAA game.
I'm excited for this, Batman, MGS5, and Witcher because they aren't making concessions for the old tech's footprint. It looks like Far Cry and Dragon Age are sitting it out at least for one more round. That's fine and all, but it bothers me when devs have the guff to claim that something like Dragon Age isn't being affected by being cross-gen. It's like, yah, whatever, in enough time when Inquisition's sequel hits (if it hits) they'll be boasting of all these great things they can NOW do with only the next-gen in mind.
It's such BS. The trailer graphics and animation look like a PS4 game but compare them to the graphics and animations with the gameplay footage and they look like a regular PS3 game.
first time I saw this (part of this trailer) until now. I take it that this is pre-rendered CGI? I suppose I can't tell for sure because it's in this small window. I did see the game play though from a few days ago. The animations, scale, and lighting system on display were all clearly ahead of the prior-gen. This also goes for the new Batman.
⦠as for MGSV. I guess that's a cross-gen game, isn't it? still looks awesome-sauce though.
but I do believe I'm beginning to see a visual gap between PS4 exclusives and multi-plats. Order, Uncharted 4, and even Drive Club seem to have this filmic nigh-on pre-rendered CGI look to them that seem a cut above, detail wise, than any of the other games out there.
EDIT: this goes for Bloodborne too if that is indeed realtime.

I think, I'm not certain, but I think Phantom Pain is full next gen and only Ground Zeroes was cross. Anybody confirm?
It would be possible just not as impressive. I'm sure the PS3/360 could handle it quite easily but with a lot less NPCs and downgraded visuals which they are good at doing. Ubisoft should just shut up and make their games. Especially after the firestorm they started with AC Unity and Far Cry 4 about their reasoning behind not doing playable female characters. I loved how other developers and animators called them out on twitter about that. One animator said it would be a day or two of extra work at most. I still plan on getting this but they really need to just shut up already.

Im sure The Assassins Creed: Comet would have a French setting with similar, but 2 player co-op gameplay. Eventually you realize it's the Unity version but for last gen.
That game looks pretty pitiful, to be honest.
RE: AC: Comet. I think that if it was launching at the same time as Unity, Ubisoft would have made it official by now. Something tells me that, if it doesn't change form, and it it exists, it'll wind up being a mid-year stopgap to plug a possible hole in Ubi's release schedule, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn that it's a smaller scale D/L-only title, too.
And that's all I have to say about that.
Gotta wonder if they're not getting a little kickback from Sony/MS to keep this one next-gen only.
Just a heads up, your starting line (on ps4 and xbox 360.) I know you ment PS3 ; )
i have to say that the co-op bit looked like a cool idea i want it to work in reality cos thats really what i want from next gen on top of the pritty visuals.
happy gaming =)
