Ubisoft: Watch Dogs’ Success Means It’s Now A “Franchise”

If it succeeded, we all knew it would become Ubisoft's newest franchise.

The game sold 4 million copies in its first week, so they're pleased with how the recently released Watch Dogs has performed. As senior vice president of sales and marketing Tony Key told GameSpot :

"Creating a new franchise like that is the hardest thing to do in our industry because there's so much risk involved. We're incredibly happy with the sales of the game and the experiences that the people are having. So it's a franchise. It goes into the franchise barn and now we figure out what to do next. It's something that we can build on now."

Ubisoft also intends to produce a movie based on the game, which is no surprise, as most of their franchises are seeking a film adaptation at this point. Ubisoft Motion Pictures is already working on the "Watch Dogs" movie and fans have called for Tom Cruise to play the role of protagonist Aiden Pearce. That probably won't happen but hey, you never know.

As for the actual game sequel, Key wouldn't confirm that it will definitely happen, but if a new effort is in the works, the team will "have to come up with something innovative and entertaining." That's the only way for the brand to "grow." For my part, I'll be interested to see where Watch Dogs goes from here…

Can't wait to play this game. This is one IP I want to be on board from the very beginning.

I'll have to try it myself. I agree about being on board with franchises that show lots of promise. I feel like if you get out of sync with them you sort of set yourself up to be sidelined for future mega releases.
Like Metal Gear for example. Because I've played all of them to date (other than PW and GZ) I know I can be excited for MGS5, having missed little of the mythology that backs up the story and it's characters. If I hadn't been following the series as I have, MGS5 would feel less interesting to me.

So now you can expect one every year!

I just hope they don't fall into the annual trend.

They should really give fans a chance to play it and enjoy it for at least two years.

When you keep releasing a sequel or prequel every year, you are bound to cause fatigue unless it is done extremely well. A three year cycle is perfect for a game of this type.

I'm in Act 1 still. It has yet to grab me. It's cool, I will definitely continue to play it but maybe my expectations were too high. Not big on Aeden so far. The mini games are pretty fun though, especially the one where you bring light back to the city. Online multiplayer is pretty fun too

Tom Cruise as Aiden Pearce would be pretty cool.

And I don't really like Cruise anymore.
