The Order: 1886 Delayed, As Devs “Keep Pushing On The Game”

Forget about The Order: 1886 for this holiday season.

While it originally held a tentative launch window of Fall 2014, this highly anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive title won't be ready until next year.

Ready at Dawn CEO and creative director Ru Weerasuriya told GameSpot that his team intends to deliver on what they promised:

"As we keep on pushing on this game, we really want to deliver on the experience that we promised, and because of that, the game is slated for release in early 2015."

Set in an alternate fictional reality of the Victorian Era, the citizens of London are facing "a threat to their very existence," and a certain group of brave fighters have sworn to protect them. You play as Galahad, a member of the Knights, who can use Blackwater (a mysterious substance that can heal him) to combat the rampaging enemies. Recent gameplay footage has shown a promising third-person shooter, but not everyone fell in love with what they saw.

Any chance the game was delayed because of that reaction…?

Well, I can't say I'm surprised. I always expected it to release in 2015.

On the other hand, it's a good call. Sure, it'll infuriate the impatient, but I'd prefer the wait for a greater experience.

I don't think the delay was caused because of the reaction. It wasn't as big as the Mass Effect 3 fiasco, and RaD already confirmed that the video quality was poor, not the game itself. As for the gameplay, well, you can't satisfy everyone.

It'll be done when it's done. How did rushing the production to meet a release date work out for Battlefield 4? I'll have my order when The Order is ready!

I still don't understand the lack of co-op in the game . It's been in games for thirty years and it seems like it would fit well. What's the purpose of crafting a game where you have up to three other AI controlled partners at a time, unless it's done in an awesome way like Dragon's Dogma? I hope it's not for the sake of a good story because that should never trump gameplay. And are the werewolves gonna have guns? Maybe we'll see more robustness and variety to the gameplay come E3.

Disagree, I'd rather have a great story than the genericness that co-op brings to all gameplay.

Games are for gameplay NOT story. I want a great story I read a book, watch a movie. That's the purpose if those mediums. Not that I don't love a great story in my games, but again, not to sacrifice gameplay additions. And co-op, done right, improves any game. Hell, even the worst games are better when you go through it with a buddy. Great developers should be able to balance both and keep all options open. Gears managed to do it. Not to say RaD isn't great, but at this point they are the equivalent of a really good cover band. Their past games don't necessarily mean they'll be able to stand on their own two feet, graphical excellence aside,

Not everyone likes co-op, and not everyone is interested in playing with others.

I think people look for different things in games. Some will focus only on having fun and gameplay and do not care about anything else.. For others, they truly want to have immersion in the game, play a good story, listen to an awesome soundtrack, enjoy the good dialogue and level design, etc.

I'll be the first person to proclaim the greatness of co-op, but nothing can hinder the experience worse then a crummy story. With or without a buddy. On the other side, nothing can propel you to keep going more than a great story.

I don't want a crappy game that's great with a buddy. I would rather have a great game that I can talk to my buddy about.

Meh… old fashioned thinking, Kid.

Way back 100 years, critics said movies were for entertainment, and essentially, flash while the theatre was for art and storytelling. Heck, just prior to the Elizabethan era, actors in the theatre were not given proper burials because they spent their life living as "liars", which is a sin. True art was in music and written word. Not the theatre.

They were wrong. You are too. It's too bad you don't see the potential a new medium can bring. It took about 30-40 years for movies to start to get much better at telling stories. That's about the timeline games are on now. If you ask me, I'd say we're on the cusp of the tech taking the next big step to storytelling that movies did after WW1.

In fact, so far, the history of video games as a potential medium as art is almost identical to the history of movie making.

What's even cooler? It was around the 30-40 year mark that renowned actors in the theatre started appearing in film. Same thing is happening with games now. You can learn a lot from history, you know.

I can see the idea of co-op being a part of the game, but stories aren't important?

Well if you want to keep gamers hooked, you better make sure that that gameplay is new and addictive, otherwise I'll have no reason to play it or come back to it.

You used Gears as an example and yeah, Gears 1 was new and original, but after that it became repetitive and dull to play, for me at least. I get bored easily if my brain isn't engaged. At least if there's a damn good story, I'm more inclined to pick up a sequel. Much of the reason I still bother to play Halo.

See the problem with games without a good plot is that more is expected of them, we are bored of Angry Birds, Flappy Birds and 100 different chest high wall type shooters, we are bored of FPS war games and generic button mashers and QTE happy games. They are no longer original, so the only way to keep us coming back is a good plot or addictive multiplayer, otherwise I'm not buying.

If the devs say the story is what matters most then I'd say yeah cuz it's their vision. As to co-op, just about any old piece of junk co op can be fun with a buddy. And games that do add it tend to be downgraded in gameplay quality, reduced to just the shooting aspect.

Underdog- Games do have the ability to tell compelling stories and have a one up on other mediums by offering an organic story sometimes affected by the player's actions. I never said it didn't. Besides Metal Gear, a David Cage game, or a RPG, I've never picked up a game for purchase and said "Man, I hope it has a great story". Games should have great gameplay in the forefront. A great game with a minimalist story (Shadow of the Colossus, Super Mario Galaxy, Journey) are better experiences than games with great stories and weak gameplay (Enslaved: Odyssey to the West). And games with sublime gameplay and weak stories (Vanquish, Bayonetta,) shouldn't be be railed against because of the latter.
As much as I am a champion of video games to the uninformed, I am equally a champion of comic books. Having a collection of 50,000 I have read some magnificent stories, certainly dwarfing the best gaming has to offer. And while I will spare you a ham-fisted, condescending "history lesson" on the medium, I wi simply say that comics have come a long way to be finally given some respect by the mainstream, even if it is in the form of some not so great blockbuster movies. I certainly want the same for games but not at the expense of what makes a game a game, the gameplay.

you're more than welcome to replay FUSE and pre-order your Sunset Overdrive, Kid. no one will mind.

EDIT: btw the simple solution is to look to what Naughty DOg did with Uncharted. No. Co-op in the single player Uncharted games wouldn't have been better. They knew that. So instead they implemented specialized multiplayer co-op missions. A discrete subset of game modes to be played for co-op fun. SO for the sake of Kid and others who would like that extra gaming value, then maybe they'll include something like that down the road.

Guess those freakouts had them worried about having enough originality. Looks like there will still be no REAL PS4 games until 2015 now!

Not sure if you are going for shock value, trolling or what? You must mean PS4 exclusives correct? According to the current 2014 release schedule there are going to be to many games available on the PS4 to buy. I know I won't be able to afford them all. Already had to pass on Wolfenstein and Watch_Dogs. We also may get some surprises from E3 as well.

This list is simply amazing! Destiny, Diablo III RoS, Batman AK, Middle Earth SoM, Transformers RotDS, DA:I, Driveclub, Lords of the Fallen, The Witness, Galak-Z, Helldivers, The Last of Us Remastered, Planet Side 2, FarCry 4, Evolve, CoDAW, and Rime all have a chance to come out this year. I highly doubt all of the above will make it in 2014 though. One thing for sure 2015 is going to be EPIC!

Eh, once again just proves that there really is no urgency for jumping into next gen consoles. It's not looking good for the rest of the 2014 for the PS4…. though I think the PS4 will need a big announcement this E3 to really make up for this. I certainly wont be getting a PS4 this year at this rate.

Ah man, that's too bad. I for one wholly support developers who would rather take more time to get it right than rush something out, but Sony might have a serious lack of major exclusives this fall. Not good.

Gamer46

Aside from DriveClub, the major 'exclusive' is a remaster of a 2013 PS3 game, that's a friggin' joke. Everybody here will go out of their way to defend Sony, but the simple fact of the matter is with the number of first party studios it has, this output is absolutely pathetic. 2015 had better have at least 5 major exclusives to make up for this pitiful year. The PortStation4 continues to be nothing more than a super expensive door stop.

I'm not entirely sure what he's ranting about to be honest, no one is forcing him to buy a PS4 and to those who did buy one, it's none of his business.

Both consoles have a fairly lackluster games line up. bar Titanfall and Second Son, there isn't much on the immediate horizon or already available worth screaming about.

Yes, because Sony has just been tearing things up this year. The Xbox One actually has had some decent news lately. Unlike everybody else here, I'm not a fanboy, just want great games, particularly great exclusives for the console I have which is the PS4, I don't even own an Xbox One and won't be getting one anytime soon. Doesn't mean I'm going to praise Sony for news that isn't positive. When the first party games start coming out and actually deliver on the hype, I'll give credit where its due. This first year for PS4 though has not been good at all. Sorry I want games to actually be good and delivered on time. Unlike others I don't enjoy playing the waiting game. There's nothing wrong with wanting more than a port of The Last of Us and there's nothing wrong with wanting these developers to deliver on time. No reason The Order shouldn't have been ready by this holiday especially when the developers don't even have to worry about multiplayer.

When you say "decent news", surely you're not talking about the backtracking MS is doing after screwing everyone over because that doesn't count as decent news in my books, it just counts as cleaning up a mess they made all over the floor. If you consider that decent news, you my friend have low standards.

First of all, it's perfectly normal for games to be delayed. In fact, it's the norm. Do a google search. On exclusive titles rated 9+, -most- of them were delayed for some amount of time. So no. I have no problem with delays.

As for no good news, just the other day we learned that the PS4 is already selling for a profit as opposed to the poor hardware choice from MS that won't allow it to sell for a profit for a while. That's a huge advantage for Sony to drop price for the fall.

Lastly, I don't know of any stellar XB1 news… like GMRX said, they took away needing to pay for a mandatory Kinect, which isn't good news… it's just no longer bad news. And I heard about another Halo. I loved Halo 2 and 3. Played the crap out of them online back in the day. Halo 1 made me buy an XBOX. I enjoyed ODST alright and haven't played Halo 4. That's about as great as hearing about a new Uncharted or God of War. Probably gonna be a good game, but certainly nothing we haven't seen before.

Not a big deal, just get it right the first time. We don't need another BF4. I am proud of Sony and RAD for taking the time. This is a special game with great art direction, atmosphere and time period. We don't even know all there is to know about The Order's game play yet.

This fall is to packed with new games. If you think this is the last news in regards to a delay for games coming out in October and November 2014 you're wrong. I feel more confident that The Order is going to be in the same league as Uncharted and The Last of Us. Look at what happened to Driveclub after it was delayed. Driveclub looks spectacular!

not exactly surprising, journalists previewing the game have been saying for months theres no way in hell it would release this year.
$ony REALLY needs a few rabbits to pull out of their hat at E3 this year, this is just ridiculous to have only one exclusive left for the rest of the year, especially when the last one released in march, that means they have only one game releasing in the NINE month timeframe!
christ, not even the ps3 had such a poor second year!
gotta love it how $onys been running around, oh we had developers on the system really early, first thing we did was ask for developers input.
well, if developers were in it so early, why is there so few games ready for it?
especially first party!
if you were to tell me this time last year that the xbox one would have more exclusives releasing in 2014 i would of admitted you to the funny farm personally!
now, thought, thats exactly how its looking, and by quite some margin!
who has the largest first party library in the industry again?
