Prediction: Gamers Will Be Suspicious Of Watch Dogs Reviews

This whole thing is shaping up badly.

Consider the evidence, if you will:

Over the past few months, this game has been the center of plenty of controversy. There was that new gameplay footage, which appeared to have been drastically scaled down . We've seen media since that looks fantastic, though, and Ubisoft didn't seem to put much stock in those comparison videos.

Going back further, we've got the delay, which caused plenty of backlash. It's not common for such a huge title to get pushed back so late in the day, and wild theories quickly began to circulate. We remember the situation back in October; many, including analyst Michael Pachter , believed Watch Dogs wouldn't have been able to compete against the heavy hitters. Ubisoft claimed the game simply wasn't ready.

Now, the world's first review has been released: A glowing 19 out of 20 stars from Jeux Video. Yes, that's a French publication and of course, Ubisoft is a French company. As you might expect, there are other factors involved in a world premiere review, as indicated by this article . Furthermore, we're hearing things about the review embargo – and how Ubisoft is hand-picking critics to handle the first round of reviews – and that's not helping, either.

Those who have been reading and ingesting all these headlines might be a little skeptical of reviews, that's all I'm saying.

If they are hand picking who they release it to for the first round of reviews then they deserve all the skepticism they get.

You know a movie is suck when it isn't even screened for the press. Ubi clearly must want trend setting scores with trusted favorability givers (soft critics) before the real ones are given a shot.

If I ever do play it it'll be bargain bin. THIS is the title that seems generic to me.

In light of Far Cry 4 I am a bit skeptical that you have this white guy running around hacking all of what is sure to be chinaman technology, i demand an apology!

I pre-ordered Watch Dogs after seeing recent videos and reading what people were saying about it.

I watched a few live streams on PS4. The video is not as sharp as the image you'll see when you play it, but you can tell the game looks pretty good.

There's plenty of footage on youtube, go check it out if you wanna see if its worth the investment.

I haven't watched anything on it yet and probably won't until I play it for myself.

"Ubisoft is hand-picking critics to handle the first round of reviews"

-> That's *exactly* what I've been suspecting all along. Nobody will make me imagine Ubisoft is the only ones practising this.

Those of us who keep an eye on metascore sites recognize this: The first few reviews are very often suspiciously high compared to the reviews who later are published. That is just how it is. And also, typically the first reviews comes from some stray sites that makes you go "wtf, who are those guys!?". And it's not like it's always the same names popping up with early reviews, nope, no pattern there.

you nailed it, that must be why metacritic scores go that way.

When aren't gamers suspicious? That's the question.
Just about any comments section on the internet reveals that gamers are a paranoid bunch, sometimes its called for, most of the time its not.

I have played the game. There's nothing wrong with the visuals, they're quite nice actually. It does suffer from a few issues which I believe are going to be remedied in a day one patch or something. Driving is a bit wonky and also there is definitely a frame rate issue when driving at really high speeds.

@SASSYGIRL82, I did what you suggest and it didn't sold me, still having doubts on Watch Dogs, watching the game on PS4 did nothing for me,doesn't look half of fun like GTA 5.

@Swinny, Can you blame them? how many times are publishers honest with gamers, guess you think it's okay for them to mislead us from time to time…

No I don't think that's OK, but I also don't think its OK to completely undermine what gaming is all about by becoming a whiny cynic with a paranoia problem.

I don't know what to expect from Watch Dogs. In one hand I think it has goty potential written all over it. On the other hand, it may be a mixed bag for all the various reasons described, including also just not being optimally executed.
The positive thing in my mind is that Ubisoft has a current track history of producing quality games.

ACIV
Rayman Legends
Child of Light
Splinter Cell
FC3

I'm really impressed by how they turned both Assassin's Creed's and Splinter Cell's boat around. I can't think of too many instances where a franchise was sinking in the eyes of critics and then pulled off a recovery.

Yup, and not only that; They have proven time and again that they can make good open world games.

So I think there is every reason to have hopes for this title.

That's very true, Ubi doesn't put out crappy products.
