New Vegas Director: Next Fallout Should Focus On Choice

Choice. It's an ongoing trend in video games, and one director wants to see more of it.

Fallout: New Vegas designer and project director Josh Sawyer says he hopes the new Fallout entry will force players to make some difficult decisions. Speaking during a recent Eurogamer interview , Sawyer said for this particular series, choice is critical:

"Fallout games are best when the choices are – and this applies to role-playing games in general, but Fallout is a more desperate world – more agonizing. They feel more appropriate to the post-apocalyptic genre. So I hope that whatever twists and turns the story takes, it's more nuanced than a black-and-white choice."

Sawyer added that while some players "want to go through the wasteland like a tourist," he'd rather be challenged to make tough choices, and he imagines a lot of players feel the same way. For the record, although it's widely believed that Bethesda's new game is indeed Fallout 4 (rumored to feature a post-apocalyptic Boston setting), the announcement won't happen any time soon .

But when it does come down the pike, are you most interested in an adventure full of significant choices to make?

I am and I commend Josh Sawyer for making such a great idea for a great series.it just makes sense.I'm also glad someone that was involved in the fallout games make some noise about the next fallout. Because the way Bethesda has been acting like douchebags on even the mention of the next fallout is getting pretty irrating.don't get me wrong I LOVE their games to death, but they are a-holes as far as people are concerned.

I don't think it needs any of that at all, the story of Fallout 3 and New Vegas were barely present and not even the point of the game. I'll be happy with something as massive as Skyrim and tons of missions and stuff.

If they want to do that choice rigamarole then I guess that's fine, but so far nobody has really made choice matter in a game besides some black and white changes. You feel like your decisions matter in games like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Walking Dead, Heavy Rain, Beyond but they really don't do much. You still have to be funneled along a pre-made path.

I just hope it IS Bethesda working on it and not these guys, New Vegas was mediocre.

If it's not Bethesda, it sure as hell ain't Obsidian; they're shoulders deep in Pillars of Eternity and the Wheel of Time game (though that hasn't been heard of officially in about four years).

While I agree that story isn't the strong suit of games like TES and Fallout, that doesn't necessarily mean choice and morality shouldn't be. I mean, imagine if every quest gave you branching paths, with your choices being remembered by the game and slowly spread throughout the world. Say you choose to kill someone, and then later on that NPC's sibling tries to hunt you down, and you're seen executing them out of context and suddenly word starts to spread throughout the Wasteland that you're a ruthless killer, which then closes off certain missions and opens others. Then tie that into a broader morality system (something like RDR's, maybe?) where NPCs react to you based on the reputation that you've built up over time…

I'm just thinking here. The choices don't have to be as large or obvious in their effects as Megaton in Fallout 3. In fact, I think most people would actually prefer the nuance.

I disagree with the story being barely present – but I guess that heavily depends on how you play the game. In Fallout 3 I was genuinely interested in the story and really could not wait to progress on the main story path, often saving the side quests for later.
In fact, the story of Fallout 3 was one of my main arguments for that game.

In New Vegas however, now that story was just nonsense. So I had to focus on other stuff while playing (as often is the case with me in video games).

Beam, that's probably because you don't play linear games so you think that the very general stories in these games are better than they are.

I enjoyed looking for my dad and getting the water going too but that very simple approach to storytelling doesn't hold a candle to what is being done with narratives in non-open world games like Uncharted 2 or Walking Dead.

The best thing about Fallout to me is always the exploring and questing, building up the character and arsenal along the way, gaining partners, looting, meeting new people, etc.

I love to hear this.
But I think that the Fallout series is one of the better series in this respect – both Fallout 3 and New Vegas had some coices that really affected the world both visually – like nuking that place – and in conversations or how people viewed you (factions etc). But more of that? Why sure!

But typically most choices in RPGs are – at least up until now – very artificial and with no real consequences other than smaller variations during conversation, the story usually continues like destined with only minor "slopes" at certain points.

But to be forced to make some some real decisions is awesome. I love that sensation of sitting there, biting my nails, going
– "oh nooo, what DO I do now? What will be the consequences? What will happen next? And what WOULD happen if I did that other thing instead?!"

I just love those moments.

more choice in the next fallout game….ok,why not,but i must admit i liked fallout 3 as it was.
We will have to wait a long time apparently,at first i was extreme disappointed, but then my thoughts were this:When it will take some time, maybe 2 years?,it will be
1.true next gen and not an upgraded ps3 version
2.by then gamecompany's will also be even more skilled in making use of the ps4
We will get a super fallout game!
The Question is,will there be a fallout 4?and how long will we have to wait,i mean ,i hope it is not 3 or even 4 years…..
