According to the rumor , Sony may unveil a Syphon Filter reboot at E3 this year.
Believe it or not, that could be one of the biggest announcements of the show.
This franchise made quite the stir back in the original PlayStation days and honestly, it would've made a much bigger stir had it not been for Metal Gear Solid . Yes, MGS was superior but then again, the two franchises were inherently different, too. And if Sony Bend really is cranking away on this reboot – supposedly dubbed "Kill Strain" – then you will hear some very happy fans whooping and hollering.
I know these fans; they're awfully loyal, and they'll tell anyone who's willing to listen that the first few entries in the Syphon Filter franchise were absolutely stellar. The original title still holds an average 90 Metascore, for instance, and the PSP iterations were excellent. Furthermore, this is precisely the kind of game that could really benefit from the added power of the PlayStation 4. Does anyone else remember a game called Winback for the PS2? It launched early in that system's lifespan but it made me think, "if we just had more power…"
That's what I always thought whenever I played a Syphon Filter , even though I was more than satisfied with what Sony produced. A reboot would be fantastic, although I may have some reservations about Sony Bend. They have to join the big boys and that's always a tall order.
Reservations about Sony Bend? They did Resistance: Retribution, which was better than R2, and that's enough for me. Considering that MGS is no longer a PS-exclusive, it makes sense that Sony would want to fill that gap with a stealth/action game of their own, and the pedigree of Syphon Filter makes it a prime candidate. Still, if that is their intention, then Bend (or whoever is doing this), is going to need to pull out all the stops and make something utterly mind-blowing and innovative from both a narrative and gameplay standpoint. It can't just be the same-old in a new shell. It needs to be all-new.
All I know for sure is that E3 is gonna be one hell of a show this year.
Bend did Uncharted Golden Abyss. They proven to be a very talented studio who is now not limited to handheld hardware. I don't think there needs to be any reservations.

There is a very large difference between portable development and console development.
And no, I don't think Retribution was better than R2 at ALL.
But Bend started from console development. They used to be Eidetic. Which developed pretty much all the Syphon Filter games.
In terms of scale and scope and technical requirements, sure there's a difference. Big difference. But when it comes to imagination and creativity, I'd argue that there is no difference at all. And those latter things are what I'm most concerned about in any gaming project. Bend has shown themselves fully capable of creating games with a distinct flair for the imaginative, so I'm behind them.
In a way, I'd liken it to Media Molecule. We knew that they could make something imaginative for the console, but we were sure that they could match that sentiment on the Vita with Tearaway, while taking full advantage of the hardware. Reversal of situation for Bend.
And I can totally understand where you're coming from with what you say about R2. From an objective standpoint, R2 was the better game in every respect. I just couldn't get over the accommodations to FPS archetypes in the fully regenerative health and two-weapon loadout. Much preferred Retribution's adherence to the formula of the original.
I'd love to see SF rebooted, that was my favorite franchise at the time.
I remember all of us guys razzing each other over whether we liked SF or MGS better, and I was 100 % in the SF camp.
Hey Ben,
As far as the Winback games, I have WB: Covert Operations(PS2) & WB 2: Project Poseidon(xbox), but I still haven't play either one as of yet.
So if you're able to tell me if they're good(& maybe even close to the FS franchise), I'll make sure to put them into my next 10 games queue tonight.
The original winback was for the N64 I remember playing it a lot at a friends back in the day. Covert operations is a remake, its pretty good.
Thanks, I just added them to my queue.
I loved syphon filter, and think that SF1 and MGS1 are on par with each other in different ways. The gameplay in SF was tighter feeling, less clunky controls, but the story goes to MGS for sure.
I think that they could easily reboot Syphon filter on the PS4 and have it be Sonys winning 3rd person shooter this generation.
We need an MGS killer anyway.
MGS Killer not needed.Because MGSV has redefined stealth in many ways and it's EPic!
Good Luck SF

I Agree MGSV is itself a killer stealth game
What did you think of the new mechanics and the cliffhanger in the end of ground zeroes?
I think the new stealth mechanics are amazing like holding up a guard and making him call another guard, using the environment to your advantage like switching off the power to get past cameras,Jumping from running to crawl immediately to not get noticed.
The Phantom Pain will have even better mechanics like tapping on the wall to call a guard, the cardboard box and many items of
Metal Gear Solid.
The Story is going to be amazing bridging the gap between Big Boss and Solid Snake Story.

Did you watch the phantom pain teaser trailer?
Yeah its Epic
An exclusive I meant, of course.
Wow! I felt like mgsv was a huge step back, the story felt meh…to me at least. Each mgs was like a new bench mark but V hints at a dlc focus.
I hope I'm wrong though
Plot twist. Kiryu and JapaneseGamer are the same person.
Best news iv read this week 🙂 Hopefully they don't try and change it too much. Don't fix whats not broken.
Ah yes, my first stealth-ish game. So excited.
I'll be keeping an eye on this one, but it won't be an instant buy until I know I can still use a taser to start enemies on fire.
its funny how the PSP developers, little small studios who have never seen the big league, are the guys who are creating the most anticipated games.
ready at dawn with the GOW PSP games, and bend studio with syphon filter omega strain and syphon filter dark mirror.
id love to see a new syphon filter game, we NEED a stealth game to bring the genre into the 21st century, to update it and show us this is what next gen stealth games are about!
show MGSV and splinter cell blacklist whos boss!
but i dunno, something makes me want to work on a new IP even more.
lord knows we need more IPs in this industry, some new ideas.
A reboot would be awesome. I still remember the intro and the story was mind blowing.
"Go! Torch it burn it all"
"But what about the serum?"
"Leave nothing, now I shall show you how i deal with informants. Finish him"
Then I saw Mara, her evil was just awesome.
The ps2 versions were hopeless though.
Man I hated Syphon Filter. Such a tedious, frustrating experience.
fundly enough i think can vagely remeber that game on the ps2 from somewhere and i wud be willing to give it a shot possibly
happy gaming =)
