I just can't get past this question.
As much as I respect Hideo Kojima, and while I'm convinced that Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will be excellent, I'm having trouble with this "introduction" explanation.
I mean, I know Ground Zeroes will be great; I'm not buying that I'll finish it in only two hours, and those who have seen and played it have absolutely raved about its amazing quality.
I'm not questioning that. Nor am I questioning the eventual mastery of The Phantom Pain , because that's how much faith I have in Kojima and Co. But this idea of releasing a prelude to the full game, charging between $20 and $40 (depending on platform and format), and saying it's to help "ease veterans players into a new era of MGS"…it's just hard to swallow. For the record, price isn't my hang-up; I maintain that a fantastic experience is a fantastic experience. I only care about the quality. But I simply don't understand that explanation.
"Ease in" players? Why? What's wrong with an elongated tutorial at the start of the full game, if necessary? I understand that fans have been playing MGS for a very long time, and MGSV will be the first title in the series that plays very, very differently. Well…so what? You know, those gamers have been playing other games in between MGS installments, and they've been playing titles that probably have a very similar structure to MGSV. We're not novices in the realm of open-world exploration, and having more freedom and choice is a very common trend in the industry today.
Therefore, I can't understand why anyone would ever need a separate prelude. I have no choice but to cry foul on this "introduction," just based on a lame explanation that doesn't appear to hold an ounce of water.

I agree. There's not much easing of anything but this most likely has to do with money and Konami. I think if Kojima had full control, he would release just one game. I may be wrong though.

It is about money. Always is.
I think some people forgot that next-gen games (real next-gen games, not remakes or high-res last gen games) were going to cost companies more money to develop.
That is something that some companies have discussed openly. Like Capcom. They are looking at ways to try and fund these next-gen projects without them ending in the red. In the case of Capcom, they're looking into making mobile games and hoping they'll be able to produce more smash hits like 'Smurf Village'. Hits that could help them fund some next-gen console games.
This "intro" to Phantom Pain is just a sneaky way of charging players around $95+ dlls for a next-gen game.

I'm sure it's gonna get released together with Phantom Pain at some point and that's why I'm waiting to get it…
I got the PS2 for Sons of Liberty and the PS3 for Guns of the Patriots… guess I'll wait for the full package once again!
Man Kojima stated that The Phantom pain will have the answers to everything Metal Gear.
My Questions –

2.Why has Zero become so evil?
3.Is Big Boss going to lose an arm at the end of Ground Zeroes?
4.Are we going to see Solidus in The Phantom Pain with Solid and Liquid?
5.Are going to see the Gray Fox and Naomi relationship?
6.Is Skull Face really the Father of Psycho Mantis?
7.Are we going to finally find out about Ocelot's Ultimate Goal?

I don't see why Zero started killing people cause Big Boss left the patriots, somehow i don't see that as a big enough reason.But they need to show evil Zero in the Phantom Pain.

If you can get your hands on this months GameInformer Magazine, the combined Ground Zero & Phantom Pain's stories are actually it's cover story, with 20 pages devoted to Kojima & the 2 upcoming games.
I just got it myself so I haven't read it yet, but I'm willing to bet some of your questions might be somewhat answered in there.
BTW, not sure where you're located, but here in the US, all GameStops will have this months GameInformer Magazine for sale right now.

If the phantom pain ships with 2 discs on xbox 360 well methinks thats the answer along with the no brainer of more money.
More than 2 discs on xbox 360 then konami has to cough up cashola to MS.
The phantom pain has got the next MGO so maybe 2 discs aint enough for the whole package….but 1 blu ray is.
I thought only Ground Zeroes was going to be last gen

I just wish Final Fantasy XIII sold the first 20 hours (the tutorial) separately and then had a full game that was open.
heh, hadn't thought of that. Even I may have made it through FF XIII if that were the case.
Its an obvious cash grab. No secrets about it.
I don't think it's necessary at all, but personally, I'm too much of a 'Metal Gear' fan to care. I'll happily hand over $40 for the opportunity to be temporarily sated while I await 'The Phantom Pain.'
It's designed to make it easier to take your money.

It's not weird. The motivation is obvious. For the mystery downvoter to approve of your post, you must be completely apathetic.
I've lost so much respect for the MGS team because of this, it's a clear cut attempt to rip people off using the MGS name. They know there are loads of gamers who will buy anything MGS and they're taking advantage of that fan loyalty. And I'm sorry but length absolutely does matter in relation to price, if it is indeed only 2 hours long $40 is outrageous no matter how good the 'game' is. And I use the term loosely as this is essentially an extended tutorial that should be part of the actual game.
This is the slippery slope for gaming, not DLC and an all digital world. Selling drawn out tutorials for nearly full game price is what gamers need to watch out for.
One of the excuses that I read early on was that fans were very, very vocal about the release date of The Phantom Pain being such a huge span of time away, which resulted in the decision to double down on this prelude and get it out the door. It makes sense, as it likely would have been the tutorial in the first place, and it does away with any concept of it being an introduction to the new mechanics of The Phantom Pain (which is a ridiculous assertion anyway, considering that TPP is still a year or more away. As if people are going to remember the tutorial after a full year).
I'd say they were also motivated by money in some way. In any case, GZ as a stand-alone release does seem silly.
I like MGS, but I think releasing a prelude is unnecessary.
If a game has approximately two hours of gameplay, why would anyone want the option to skip some of it? There shouldn't be any optional side missions in the game, in my opinion.
The thing is this is followign the same structure of previous Metal Gear Games. MGS2 you have the Tanker mission and MGS3 you have the Virtuous Mission – Which both acted as the catalyst for the events that followed in the games main mission. Ground Zeroes is essentially that prologue mission.
Also, I don't know about you, but I am paying under half the recommended retail price for this. Had this game been released at the full retail price, yes I would be mighty huffy but the price for this title is right as far as I am concerned.
I honestly don't mind paying for it under these circumstances. As we're not going to get The Phantom Pain until 2015, it will be nice to play Ground Zeroes earlier to get a taste for what the game will have to offer.
Of course it works in the context of the story, as the Events of Ground Zeroes & The Phantom Pain have 9 years set between them so this separation can work – If anything I see this as a farewell to Peace Walker. However, I don't want to see this again in a Metal Gear Solid 6, should that ever happen.

I've come around on the GZ price/length stuff. Ben is right, a great experience is a great experience, and I have no qualms whatsoever with things of value costing money. As part of the Walmart/Amazon generation, we're all conditioned to demand less-than-market value for pretty much everything, and that's just not always fair or reasonable, to developers, to companies, to everyone.
But I agree — this whole "prologue" business is nuts. They are giving is a slice of the full game early to ease development costs. This game is going to be huge, Konami could REALLY use an influx of cash these days, and MGS is by far the biggest brand they have left. I'm not mad at them for that, and I definitely plan on playing this day 1. But what I'm NOT buying is the "ease in veteran players" excuse. This is about cash — plain and simple.
I'm gonna youtube those couple of hours, this game doesn't deserve to be owned by me.
That pretty much defines what is wrong with this generation and media – Youtube lacks moral.
I understand everyones point on this subject, And i to at first was a bit upset but konami is not making anyone buy this if you want it get it if not then there really is no point in anyone bashing on it really… Iam not trolling either im just saying what needs to be said…
