Well, at least it's an option.
But for those who want the best graphical performance possible, it really isn't an option. According to Battlefield 3 producer Patrick Liu (via GamerZines ), DICE's upcoming shooter will offer an optional hard drive install that will let the game stream higher resolution textures.
It'll be on the second disc (the campaign disc) of the Xbox 360 version and EA later confirmed to IGN that the install will be available on the PlayStation 3 version as well. However, the way it's worded, it sounds like a required install on that Blu-Ray disc… Well, anyway, an install will result in higher-res textures; that's all you need to know. Liu also adds that he believes they're "pushing technology to the limit" and he argues that "we're the best looking game."
Well, if you're going to compete with RAGE , you had best look pretty special. And don't forget about other titles this fall, like Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Batman: Arkham City . So, are you going to be doing this BF3 install or what?
Related Game(s): Battlefield 3
i dont really care about having to do these game installs. it sucks to manage your hard drive space but it happens. i just put a 320 in my ps3 and i still dont have enough space for my content. once i finish downloading the content on my video list and moving to an external drive, i have to do all the game installs and patches on half my games. when i have the money im gonna try to upgrade to a 640gb drive for my ps3.
i dont know if i will play battlefield due to money being tight right now but my sister works for blockbuster so i may try to rent it for free if i have time. if i do i have no problem doing any installs that make the game look and run better. that is the point of the drive.
if early drives were bigger in the first place and stupid companies werent trying to sell systems with 4gb drives, people would understand game installs are good.
I hate it when developers sound really cocky. Sure, technically Battlefield 3 may surpass MW3 but have they forgotten about other games like the ones you mentioned.
That's why I like Naughty Dog. They're proud without being too cocky.
I agree with you on being cocky. When Naughty Dog gets asked about they are specific and tell us they have tuned the animations, put greater details in the textures etc.
Judging from my short time with the beta, this game needs all the help it can get in te graphics department. I was utterly in dismay when I first loaded it up to see the realization that BF3's graphics were arguably the most overhyped component of the console generation. I know it's just a beta, but it has a long ways to go to compete with KZ3, Crysis 2 or Rage.
This is strictly console speaking. Having played BF3 beta on PC as well, it's every bit as spectacular as everyone was led to believe.

Oh here we go…
i agree with temjin. this game does need all the help it can get in terms of graphics. the beta is just downright ugly.
i know bigred thinks there will be a big graphics uprgrade in fhe final game. there is a precedent for that happening. crysis 2 comes to mind but it is rare. i guess we will see.
You guys complain more about the graphics than the actual gameplay. Even if the graphics looked better than Uncharted 3, you guys would probabably complain about the gameplay. Bottom line is, you have to complain about one thing or another. For no reason.
Aside from graphics and glitches that will be patched because thats what a beta is precisely for, BF3 plays very well and it's very fun.
"ooo but killa betas usually are the final quality of the game"
No they're not, it doesn't matter where the beta phrase is at. It's still a BETA that the developers purposely put there for us for a reason. Reason is, so we give them feedback so that the final product is as close to perfect as possible. Be glad there even is a BETA… and day 1 release of BF3 will be a lot more playable because, there is a BETA.
U gotta look at the positive evidence 4 pieces come to mind:
1) the mentioned the beta is backend meaning skimmed down so they would be able to focus more on the structure of the servers. This makes all the sense in the world when u think about the purpose this beta serves. They want to ensure that the game doesn't crash day 1. Not being able to play online day 1 vs polished graphics. Um… I think the latter option is a no brainer. U can polish it all u want but if it winds up being a turd underneath then the graphics mean nothing.
2) play the beta now vs a week ago. The bugs are far less numerous. I have had little problem with my recent playthroughs thus DICE has proven they are listening
3) betas aren't demos. Period
4) an optional download for improved graphics? Ok so that already proves the full version will have better graphics. So doesn't that basically garuntee that its gonna be better than the beta.
I think that's enough evidence to prove that there is no reason for anyone to complain
Killa, the topic is graphics, improved graphics from HDD installs. Which if the beta is to be any measure of the graphics quality to expect from the final build( and the beta is running from HDD already…oh oh), it has a ways to go to come anywhere near the bull crap trailers DICE has been showboating since this game unveiled. Stop acting so blase about the whole negativity and backlash gamers are giving them for this. It needs to happen. Because frankly, they're misleading everyone when they've been doing what they've done, including even a trailer on PSN that states "actual game footage" from what is so obviously PC.
I won't respond to your assertion that if the graphics were good, I'd just as well attack the game play. You're wrong.
BigRed, the PC beta looks like the game they've been show boating for months. The console beta does not. It's a valid reason to be concerned with.
Some of these PC devs like to skirt around the truth when it comes to these multiplatform games, and DICE has been one of them. Some devs, like Id Software, are to be trusted because they can produce the game they've advertized. Like Rage, Doom 3 was also a console stunner.

The PC beta looks nothing like what they've been showcasing. There's no options at all to configure the graphics for high end graphic settings or anything. The full version will have all that.
Geobaldi, what the crap are you talking about? Load into a game. Pause it with the escape key from within the game match(yeah, it;s lame like this). Then go configure your graphics. Tons of options. And yes, it looks spectacular.

and the default config of the game looks very awesome as it is. It's very convincing. I think I see what you might be suggesting. I notice when I make changes to some of the settings outside of resolution etc. nothing is changing. But hot dang it looks good already. If the next gen can look even a little better than this, I think people will be pretty happy.
I've tried that multiple times the last few days after other friends said the same thing, nothing ever comes up for me when I hit ESC other then kit selection and what not. No other options on there. Never has been 🙁

I'll *definitely* do an install – I'd hardly call it an option even. Much rather do that than wait and wait for the blu-ray drive to finish reading, or suffer from lower resolution textures!
I'll do the install when I buy the game in like a year or two.
Still not sure if I am going to be able to get this one. It's going to come down to BF3 or U3 and I already know which one will win, U3. I really don't mind the installs. It just makes the game better and more enjoyable. Back to Dark Souls, what a fantastic game!
These games are releasing too close together!!! I'm getting both but as soon as Uncharted 3's in my hands, I'm gonna stop playing everything else for a while.
He just said, "Best looking game." He never said on consoles or PC. So no one knows if BF3 for consoles is competing against Uncharted 3. I would assume they are competing with RAGE on PC. I bet BF3 looks better.
i dont really mind game installs, granted i installed a 500gb on my ps3, its not a big deal to me. i just put the game in, let it install, do something else in the mean time. if it means a better game experience then by all means, ill do the install. what pisses me off is locked gamesaves. right now i'm getting irritated that one of my mass effect 2 gamesaves is locked and i can only download the save file once every 24 hours. which is a problem because mass effect 2 corrupts gamesave so i have to wait a whole day to play again. anyway, any games that can be installed, i installed on my ps3. i still have about 170gb left so theres still a while till i need to delete things or buy a bigger drive.
oh, if you are planning to buy batman arkham city, better find a kmart near you because they're giving out a free tshirt and a $30 gaming coupon. for me this means i'm saving 30 bucks on battlefield the following week and probably comes with at least a $20 gaming coupon which ill use on uncharted 3 the week after that. only problem now is what to use the gaming coupon that would most likely come with uncharted 3. since i dont care about other playable characters or challenge maps, i'm picking the huge savings instead. thought i pass this info along to you guys as well.

I just bought my PC version of Arkham City for $26 on Ebay a few hours ago. Already input the code into Steam and added it to my account, now just waiting for pre-load to start in 2 weeks or so, so I can be ready for release day.
Already had Battlefield pre-ordered so with the extra money I saved from Arkham, I went ahead and pre-ordered Payday and the new Metro game.
Only thing I can say, and I know i'm focusing on the wrong part of the story and I'm blowing it out of proportion, maybe, is "Wow, the 360 version comes with the campaign on a second disc"?
I'm glad atleast they r giving us the option.
or get the PC version and get even better textures.
i just hope they dont have the streaming issues RAGE is having.
man that games been a MASSIVE disappointment!
gameplay is exactly what you would expect from id.
but the graphics, well……
when doom 3 came out on PC it blew everyone away!
RAGE has released, and it looks like its 5 freaking years old!
so many technical problems, and what textures do load in dont exactly look too crash hot.
the best of the textures look pretty average!
dont even remind me of the TVs, i had to rub my eyeballs with absinth for a week to clean them out!
come on id, you can do so much better then this!
john better hurry the ^%$# up and give us that high res texture pack he promised!
otherwise theres going to be allot of flaming pitchforks knocking on his door.
and i thought crysis 2 was a crappy console port!
this makes that look like the freaking witcher 2!

Oh blankey, this once again proves that you don't know what the hell you're talking about. And besides, I thought gameplay was what mattered to you, not graphics?
Oh wait, I'm sorry, I'm questioning the hypocrises of a hypocrite again. Pardon me.
Yeah , tumbs down Temjin001 for telling the truth fanboys . The graphics are pretty bad compared to other games who are acclaimed for them .
Still is a fun beta tho despise the graphics and no vehicles/jet/chopper ( it s no battlefield without them ) .
Btw , talking about console version not PC

Nice to know you have the option. I remember MGS4 a 20 minute install and it sure looked pretty,. Im opting in for this game VS. the many other choices. The others will get played on the price drops. I have WAY to much on the plate to complete and play right now. I always keep a shooter in one machine and an RPG of some sort in the other machine. Right now its demons souls and BF2 or MW2. I am very anxious and a bit skeptical on what we will get for the final release of BF3. I have about 200 gigs left on my 320 so it will be an install for me.
Batman: Arkham City? What's that doing on this list..
