Today, Konami Digital Entertainment has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection will be released for the PlayStation 2. This compilation, which is guaranteed to be a must-buy for all MGS fans, will include Metal Gear Solid , Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater .

We don't have a release date for this collection, but in the press release, they say it allows players to sample the MGS universe "before" Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots drops. The estimated date for that is June, so we should expect The Essential Collection before then.

"Since its inception, the Metal Gear Solid franchise has been one of the most successful game series in the history of video games, receiving worldwide recognition and praise," said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment Inc. "Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection represents a great value for gamers, bringing together three must-have classic titles which pioneered the stealth action genre."

The package not only features the first three MGS installments, we get the Director's Cut of MGS2 and a MGS3 commemorative package, complete with artwork by esteemed franchise artist, Yoji Shinkawa. It will retail for $29.99, too, which only adds to the appeal. As soon as we hear about a release date, we'll be sure to let you know.

yea i was about to say, wouldn't anyone who ever really cared about Metal Gear own all three games anyway (though the first MGS, understandably, is harder to find these days)? seems to be targeted mostly at newcomers, unfortunately, with nothing new for those of us who been following the "solid" series since its PS1 days

and since it is only the "essential" collection, I believe it is still missing the Document of MGS2 and that fancy Metal Gear Saga DVD that was in the uber-special edition only found in Japan….*sigh* sure at least with get this, but still
