Earlier this week, a file that would allegedly update your PSP was released on the internet, but PSP owners that downloaded the update found that it only updated their working PSP into a non-working PSP. Sony has issued the following statement:
"We have become aware that there is a software program going around on some Web sites and Internet bulletin boards claiming to be an update file that rewrites the system software of the PSP hardware. This software has not been issued officially by SCEI and does not function properly. We advise our users not to execute or apply the program as it will cause the PSP hardware to stop operating."
The file does list some interesting possible future updates for the unit including: a web brower, email, voice chat, word processor, and even a spreadsheet utility. Unfortunately, they are filled with dummy data that will wreck your PSP, so stay far, far away from this update.
