EA Buys Criterion

Gamedaily is reporting that Electronic Arts has agreed to buy Burnout developer and middleware provider Criterion Software Group Ltd. Under the proposed deal with Canon Europe, which owns Criterion, EA would take over Criterion’s Guildfor U.K. studio, the Burnout and Black intellectual properties and the company’s popular RenderWare middleware technology.

“Criterion offers us studio talent and a proven management team, globally recognized intellectual property and technology infrastructure that will accelerate our readiness on the next generation of consoles." said EA chairman and CEO Larry Probst.

A company spokesperson told GameDAILY that EA will to continue licensing the RenderWare middleware technology to other developers. Financial details regarding the deal were not disclosed, nor was a time frame for getting the acquisition done provided.
